http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4hFqB2XGW0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkek0Tdh4pQ The previous evening we decided that as we had a 4x4 we would take advantage of it and drive to the Hekla volcano and climb it. Hekla is located south east of Reykjavik with a height of 1,491 metres. Hekla is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes; over 20 eruptions have occurred in and around the volcano since 874, unfortunately it wasn’t active when we were there and stubbornly remained snow-capped:-( It was an ordeal to get to the mountain itself, around an hour and a half on route 1, then half an hour on gravel road and then another half hour on proper off-road terrain which was fun. According to Icelandic Law you should only go off-road on indicated paths, but everywhere you can see tracks from vehicles that had left the roads ... read more

Thankfully I had some company with me this time so that made this trip possible. The reason is that to truly visit all the best sites you need to hire a car plus there are very few hostels outside the main cities. You could visit Reykjavik and do the Golden Circle on a tour but to see anything further afield is difficult using public transport and requires a lot of patience and reliance on hitchhiking. So if you are still interested then please read on:-) As previously stated a hire car was essential to see all the ma... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Playa del Carmen January 29th 2012

Unfortunately for me I head to head back north to Mexico to get ready for my flight home from Cancun which meant a long day of ravel from Coban to Playa Del Carmen ( an hours drive to Cancun airport). This involved a a 16 hour journey in the form of a shuttle from Coban to Chetumal over the Mexico border and then a 4 hour bus to Playa del Carmen in the fantastic ADO Mexican buses. I say fantastic as they are on time, however they are iceberg cold because of the AC and they only show the same film (in Mexican) which is some gushy chick flick. I’ve now entered Mexico o two occasions and each time I’ve hit red on the random customs check button. Basically you press a button and if it ... read more

The next day I found myself on another bus to Coban back in Guatemala (for the third time).Near to Coban are the caves of Lanquin and the karst lakes of Semuc Champey. Semuc ChampeySemuc Champey is a beautiful series of small ponds and pools on a natural land bridge that crosses the Cahabon River. In the Mayan Kekchi language, Semuc Champey means Sacred Water. The Cahabon River submerges itself at the entrance of Semuc Champey and resurfaces about 400 meters later after it passes this natural limestone bridge suspended with beautiful crystal clear ponds. In this unique natural formation you have water with shades of light green emerald to dark blue sapphire. Before reaching the lakes you have to climb around 300 metres to a vantage point and then you walk down to have a swim ... read more

Days 13-14 I had to have an earlier night than the previous one as my shuttle was picking me up at 6 in the morning, why can’t they run these at sensible times – the reason is the poor driver has to do a return trip – 12 hours in one day on these roads – he earns every penny if you ask me. He drove us into my last new country of the trip - Honduras and from now on I'm heading back up to Cancun. El Salvador was a refreshing change as you didn’t have to pay to leave the country, however to get to Copan we had to cross into a bit of Guatemala first and then into Honduras, so had to pay a $2 exit fee to leave Guat and a $3 ... read more

Central America Caribbean » El Salvador » Western » El Tunco January 21st 2012

I had managed to book a shuttle from Antigua to Playa El Tunco in El Salvador, this was the furthest away from my final destination I would be which means that from now on I would be headed back in a roundabout route to Cancun. In the shuttle was a Canadian (there are lots of them here) 3 Dutch guys and 3 Brits so we all had a good laugh on the journey. The journey took 6 hours across sometimes potholed roads and dirt tracks. The border was a bit crazy with huge tailbacks and the queue for immigration took 45 mins to get through and after all that they don’t even stamp the passport! But at least they don’t charge you to cross the border. Fellow travellers have always said that the people from El ... read more

Today I had booked a trip to climb the Pacaya volcano, which I’d learned was the best one to climb in Central America. It was 2,300 metres high and erupted in 2010 which blew away a large chunk off the top. We got dropped off 2 thirds up the mountain and had to climb 700 metres to near the top. Unfortunately we were not permitted to climb to the top as it was still active and as a result didn’t get to see the molten lava which to me was kinda the point. Nethertheless we did get some great views from the top especially when the sun set and with perfect timing one of the other volcanoes we could see from the top gave a small eruption which was cool.Near the top there was a vent ... read more

Day 9 Despite my initial concern over the bus as it had to be jump started, it managed to get to Guatemala City on schedule at 06:30 and thankfully I managed to sleep all the way there. On arriving I then had to get a taxi to the other bus station from where I got a chicken bus to Antigua. On both of these journeys I was the only gringo on the bus – nothing changes:-)). If you don’t already know a chicken bus is so named as its normally full of chickens!! These buses were bought second hand from the US and it is their old yellow school buses, like the one Otto drives in the Simpsons. After 1 ½ hours I turned up in Antigua and stumbled across a great hotel – Hotel ... read more

The weather has been a pain on this trip so far, because of it I didn’t get a sunset shot from Tikal and I also lost the sunrise pic. I woke up at 04:30 to hear the sound of rain pitter-pattering on my tent so turned off the alarm and turned round and went to sleep. I eventually got up at 06:15 and headed off to wander round the ruins. The tops of the temples were enveloped in mist so I did get some good pics after all but not the famous sunrise shots. Tikal is a huge Mayan site and is littered with temples but unlike the other sites it is still shrouded by dense jungle which gives it a more natural feel. Tikal was one of the locations used for Star wars the Empire ... read more

After 3 nights I had to leave the beautiful tropical island of Caye Caulker and head inland to the jungle. I was heading to San Ignacio, not far from the border with Guatemala to stay in a jungle lodge – Barton Creek outpost. To get there I had to catch a speed boat, a bus and then a 4x4 taxi to the resort itself. The outpost is in the middle of nowhere in the jungle bordering a national park and it took 45 mins to get there from the paved road across dirt track that was so bad it shook the brakes loose on the 4x4 and we had to stop for 15 mins while the driver repaired it! The outpost itself consists of a main lodge, (thankfully with a bar) and a cabana (cabin) a separate ... read more
