It took just 1.5 hours to reach Gisenyi, which is Rwanda's version of a seaside resort, (just like being back in Blackpool:-). They are not on the cost but they do have the beautiful Lake Kivu - a freshwater lake. I was supposed to be in Gisenyi for one night as I was to depart for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) the next day - best laid plans though. I stayed at the Auberge de Gisenyi which is the place in the town, it is packed with diners every day and the buffet is always busy, especially for 1,500 RWF - my plate was always overflowing with the usual, chips, platain, rice and beans and some chilli sauce for good measure. As a price comparison a 750ml bottle of Primus, the best beer in Rwanda ... read more

I knew I had booked into the cheapest place in town in Musanze as I was the only Muzungu in the place and the rest of the occupants were tour guides! I had a day to kill in Musanze so I updated my blogs and arranged a lift to the Gorillas with Amahoro tours, fortunately I was able to join a group which meant I spent US$15 instead of $80. The next day I was up bright and early 05:30 to be ready for my pick up at 06:00, the LP said we had to get there for 07:00 otherwise you would lose your place and waste US$500 - this turned out to be rubbish as the rangers were still hanging about at 08:00. By 06:30 I had been waiting at the guest house since 06:00 ... read more

Africa » Rwanda » Ville de Kigali » Kigali June 5th 2010

I spent a day chilling in Arusha, then took the plane from Kilimanjaro airport to Kigali in Rwanda. The rest of the afternoon I spent in the bank of Kigali trying to obtain some money for my gorilla trek. Kigali is very expensive and unremarkeable I was planning on staying for 2 nights but bailed out early and headed off to Musanze for the Gorrila Trek. There are not many whiteys in Kigali and during all my bus journeys so far I have been the only one!! Everybody in Rwanda refers to me and other whiteys as Muzungu, which is good cos at least you know when they are talking about you. However, before leaving I had to visit the Rwanda Genocide museum. During the genocide nearly 1 million Tutsi's and moderate Hutus were killed in ... read more

During the night I was woken up by gunshots - a typical Muir holiday, I assumed they were coming from the armed guards that were patrolling the camp, just in case I got my pen knife out - Rambo style:-) I wasn't sure whether it was a dream from my time in 'Nam so I slowly unzipped the tent and peered out, 3 metres in front of me was the biggest Goddam elephant I had seen in my life and behind him were another two. They were feeding from the branches of three and the shots were meant to scare them away, but that had failed misreably. Unforutnately for me my tent was the one nearest the tree and as it was pitch black I was worried that Dumbo would accidentally tread all over me. Plus ... read more

During the previous E-mail we had an elderly group of tourists join us from Germany and there were ruptions as the camp has no hot water and only squat toilets. Apparently one of the group had a dodgy hip and he couldn't squat - yikes!!!. Our last day in the Serengeti and we were up bright and early for a 7am start. As usual it started off a bit slowly and we spent an hour driving round just seeing the obligatory elephgant and giraffe and the impalas. It's amazing how nonchalant you become at the sight of these creatures. As we had seen all the anim, als we hoped to see we then starting badgering Andrew that we wanted to see a kill, we originally said we wanted to see a Rhino kill a lion but eventually ... read more

Apart from being woken up in the night by roaring lions I had a good night sleep. The campsite was not fenced off so it made for an interesting trip to the bathroom, by bathroom I mean the start of the long grass:-) The morning of the safari started off very slowly and we had started to think that we had received all our good fortune the previous day. Spotting the wildlife is largely down to luck and a good guide - thankfully we had both. The park is huge and you sometimes have to be in the right place at the right time. After seeing the leopard the previous day we started asking Andrew if we would see a cheetah and a rhino, apparently the rhinos are in a protected area of the park and ... read more

After a good night's sleep in the tent we set off for the Serengeti. The previous night a couple from Chile joined our safari - Andreas and Coti so that made 5. The original 3 of us were worried about the space in the land rover but that turned out not to be a problem. We arrived at the entrance to Serengeti NP at lunchtime and after a pack lunch we went for a wander up a trail for a view of the park. The view from the top affords a view of the savannah that makes up most of the Serengeti and gives you an idea of how big it is - 14,763 sq km. On my way down from the top an elephant was wandering round and a number of tourists were wandering round ... read more

After Arriving at Nairobi airport I caught a shuttle bus to Arusha and finally arrived at my hostel after 24 hours of travelling at 18:00. The roads to Arusha were all being dug up so half the time the bus was off road which was like driving on cobblestones and the rest was tarmac. Arusha was a bit crazy but I managed to book a safari for the next day within an hour of arriving which was a result. I had heard numerous horror stories about booking safaris but went with Lasi tours I didn't know a thing about them but they turned out to be fantastic, the reason being the most important part of a safari was the guide - (it was a budget camping one so the food and accommodation were never going to ... read more

On the Friday night the hostel had organised a trip out to "Trannie night" which was an infamous night in a club called the Middle East in Cambridge, on the other side of the river from Boston. In total there were about 10 of us who ventured out into the wild side of Transvestite entertainment. Coming from Blackpool it wasn't the first drag show I had seen (I'm not saying I've seen hundreds though - don't want you getting the wrong impression:-). One of the guys (Paul) from London was decidedly nervous and had never encountered anything like Becka Da'Bus who certainly did look like a back of a bus, he was around 6 foot 5 - 18 stone and had the scariest make-up on I'd ever seen - the trannie not Paul:-) . The acts ... read more

I stayed at the Hostelling International Hostel in Boston, which was near Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. After settling in I got chatting to Ann from Hamburg who was studying over in the US and we went out for a few drinks that night. Boston was even stricter than New York for the ID rule but I was forewarned this time and took out my passport. Ann had took an extract from her passport and as it wasn't the complete thing she wasn't allowed in a couple of bars. The next day I headed off into Boston and visited the Boston Public Library, which I thought was even nicer than New York's. I carried on up Boylston Street (where most of the best bars were to be found) and into Boston Common, the ... read more
