Having visited the northern Balkan countries in June I decided to wrap up the remaining southern countries during my trip in August which is why I found myself in a hostel in Skopje. I bumped into 3 friendly Brits in my hostel and our paths would cross several times over the next few days. We teamed up with 2 Aussie girls and the six of us headed off to the old town for the first night of boozing for the trip. We ended up in a microbrewery drinking out of his huge container and listening to a local band singing eighties pop songs - Rick Astley is still not giving you up:-). The next day I had a walk round the town centre and like many other Balkan cities is it undergoing a huge rebuilding phase, ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Split June 20th 2011

Split’s main selling point in the brochure is the Diocletian Palace but it seems to be the hub for everything in the area. You can go on trips to the Krka waterfalls or Plitvice lakes (which is what I did). Plus there are the nearby islands of Hvar, Brac and Vis Split is also one of the oldest cities in the area, and is traditionally considered just over 1,700 years old. Split is very much a beach destination and doesn’t seem to attract the normal backpacker community. Most of the residents of the hostel had suitcases and spent the day on the beach and the night in the clubs. I’m not one for sunbathing but took advantage of the nightlife!! On my second morning I was up at 05:00 to go on a trip to Plitvice ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor » Kotor June 17th 2011

The bay of Kotor bay is considered one of the most beautiful bays in Europe, and features the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Perast and Kotor, as well as other typically Mediterranean towns. After settling in to my hostel I decided to climb the battlements that ascended the mountain behind Kotor, once you get to the top you get a great view of the fjord and are able to see all the luxury yachts that visit this part of the world. Further up the coast there’s a marina where many Russians holiday in summer. Kotor old town is very much like a much smaller Dubrovnik without the crowds, you could probably see this place in a day but I was hoping to go white water rafting on the Tara river so I extended my stay to ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik June 15th 2011

I then caught the bus to the tourist mecca that is Dubrovnik! Dubrovnik is a well-preserved city dating back to the 7th century lying behind huge fortress walls, it did get a bit of a hammering during the Balkan war when over 2000 shells landed within its walls but has now been restored to its former glory. "Dubrovnik used to be an independent republic, surviving mostly on trade. It managed to survive many centuries, with constant threats to its territory, particularly from the mighty Ottoman Empire and Venice. As early as 19th century, it was discovered by celebrities as a place to be seen. George Bernard Shaw once said that "those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik and find it". Royalty, presidents and diplomats have all favored the city. The late Pope John ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » East » Sarajevo » Ilidža June 12th 2011

I met my new chums on the bus to Sarajevo, 3 kiwis (not the bird) they were nearing the end of a fab overland trip from New Zealand to Beijing and from there travelling overland all the way to Portugal, a trip which would take them 6 months! As it happened we were staying in the same hostel and were kindly picked up by the owner to drive us there. I really liked Sarajevo, quite compact and was a blend of east and West, many of the ladies were wearing burkas but hardly any men were in muslim garb, make of that what you will! It was an interesting comparison between the people of Sarajevo and Belgrade, hardly anybody mentioned the war in Belgrade (apart from the demonstration of course) but everybody talked about it in ... read more

Europe » Serbia » West » Belgrade » Zemun June 11th 2011

For my journey to Belgrade, I had a 4 berth compartment on a modern Austrian train that had come from Vienna on its way to Belgrade. The only other occupant was my new chum Boris from Sarajevo so he gave me a few trips on things to see when I got there. Shortly after getting on the train the porter came up and warned us there had been many thefts on the train in the past and to keep the door locked at all times! After a fairly good nights sleep (we were woken up a the Serbian border for passport formalities) I arrived in Belgrade and walked to my hostel as I didn’t have any money until I found an ATM. Belgrade has a compact city centre and I know I’m not doing it justice ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest » Pest June 9th 2011

On my first full day in Budapesh (as I was to learn was the way to pronounce it, as opposed to having a lisp) I Architecture wise one of the highlights was the parliament building which apparently is the second biggest in the world. But apart from that there are numerous architectural marvels in the city and you could spend days walking round them all. Budapest consists of two parts Buda and Pest seperated by the Danube, Buda is on the Eatsern side and has Gellert hill and the castle district. Pest is flat and is more modern adn where you can find the nightlife. I had a wander to the opera house and whilst there just happened to check out the prices and found that a ticket for the cheap seats (up in the gods) ... read more

Day 12 Oh not again more eighties hits on the bus to Riga, I couldn't get on this bus again it was driving me crazy - argggggh! I finally arrived at Riga with an ounce of sanity left and sought out the madhouse that would be my home for my stay in Riga - The naughty Squirrel - God what a place I loved it and was the highlight of my nightlife on my travels - woohoo. I had a wander round Riga for a bit to get my bearings and then as it was Saturday night i headed back to the hostel to put on my dancing pants:-) In my dorm were two lovely and crazy Aussie girls Kelly and Amber who I spent most of my time with on my time with but not ... read more

Europe » Estonia » Tallinn January 12th 2011

Day 9 I had an early start to get the Lux express bus to Tallinn, The journey took around 7 hours and the buses were very posh with reclining seats and on the TV they had British pop hits from the eighties. So I was entertained with Paul Young, Wham, Limahl, Genesis and a whole host of unforgettable stars from the eighties:-) The bus pitched up at the station and I had to catch a tram to get to the Hostel, but couldnt work out how to pay so I ended up breaking my first law in Estonia by fare dodging. I have now worked out where you pay so I will be being a good boy in future. I was back in an Irish Bar (Molly Malones)that night and got chatting to some Geordie blokes ... read more

Day 6 - St Petes On arriving in St Petes as usual I got last and ended up flagging down a car to take me to the hostel, as before it wasn't a taxi!! I was a bit jaded due to lack of sleep but netherless decided to hit the Hermitage as it would be closed the following day (Monday)and I couldn't wait 2 days before seeing arguably the best museum in the world. The collection was originally started by catherine the great and was firstopen to the public in 1852. But the museum came into its own after 1948 when the art collection of the aritocracy were seized by the state -that's communism for you!!. The Hermitage actually constitutes numerous buildings over the city but the main buildings are a combination of the Winter Palace ... read more
