Unfortunately for me I head to head back north to Mexico to get ready for my flight home from Cancun which meant a long day of ravel from Coban to Playa Del Carmen ( an hours drive to Cancun airport). This involved a a 16 hour journey in the form of a shuttle from Coban to Chetumal over the Mexico border and then a 4 hour bus to Playa del Carmen in the fantastic ADO Mexican buses. I say fantastic as they are on time, however they are iceberg cold because of the AC and they only show the same film (in Mexican) which is some gushy chick flick. I’ve now entered Mexico o two occasions and each time I’ve hit red on the random customs check button. Basically you press a button and if it lights up green you go through, if its red you get searched, on both these occasions I was taking way over my allowance of duty free into the country but they didn’t find it. I’m thinking there may be an opportunity for me to be an international drug dealer after all.Maybe the new Mr Nice, or more likely Mr Nice than become Mr Grumpy after
16 hours on a bumpy bus listening to non-stop awful Mexican music, after this I’m throwing out all my Mariachi records as I can never listen to them again:-))
My day started at 07:30 and ended arriving in my Hostel at 23:00 and I immediately had to source some cerveza as my hostel wasn’t selling. This involved a tortuous trip to WallMart, which involved queing for 30 mins to pay, if this is the customer service that they get in USA then I feel so sorry for them. After about 15 mins I was finally going to be served but as it was approaching midnight they had to empty the tills and do a cash check – absolutely crazy. Customer service has a different angle here in Mexico, corporate capitalist culture in all its glory to the demise of the corner shop, Wallmart has so much to answer for, still it serves cheap beer:-)).
Playa Del Carmen is truly awful, it’s the antithesis of travel to me, but hey whatever floats your boat, which most of the denizens of this place are purely concerned with getting the best suntan as possible in the time spent here.
The
other draw to this place is the partying and many travellers were just setting off at 12 to hit the clubs. They all came back around 6 in the morning which I’m guessing meant for an unsuccessful night on pulling. Gosh I do sound rather down don’t I, I think I’m just ready to go home for somebody who is waiting for me. They often say that the best part of travelling is returning home and in this instance it is true.
Central America is Amazing I’ve seen no trouble, I haven’t been mugged or lost anything (as many fellow writers have experienced) and I’ve seen and done some amazing things. This area is a backpacking mecca and if you’re out for a sense of adventure then you have to come this way. The highlight has to be Guatemala it has so many diverse sights to offer and the travelling isn’t that bad if you don’t mind buses and speedbumps.
Adios Amigos, this might be my last backpacker adventure for a while as I will have some company on my next travels and she isn’t into hostels:-(
