Exciting drive today - along the Atlantic Road to Kristiansund. This is an 8km stretch of highway which connects lots of little islands together and is basically a road across the sea. First we drove to Molde and that involved a big ferry VESTNES TO MOLDE COST 301 KRONER and also, as we have come to expect, lots of tunnels, long and short. The day had started with lots of low cloud but fortunately the further we drove the better the weather got until the sun was fully out, the clouds lifted and the sky went blue (and is still like that now at 10.30pm). From Molde we followed route 64 through stunning countryside as Molde is absolutely surrounded by mountains and of course fjords. Then along the Atlantic Highway. Fantastic. We went up and over ... read more

For the first time we have been a little disappointed in our location. Was looking forward to Alesund (which is renowned for its modern architecture after being rebuilt following a fire in the early 1900s). When we woke the cloud was right down hiding the mountains across the bay and barely lifted all day but we decided we would risk possible rain and went into Alesund on the scooter, dressed up against the chilly (iced ?) wind. Only 5 km and one very short tunnel (fortunate. I Don’t do tunnels !) into the city but then we found a big problem. Where on earth do you park a scooter in Norway ? Only a couple of other motorbikes, no scooters and we know better than to park by the bicycles after our ‘reprimand’ in Oslo. Went ... read more

Weather reverse of yesterday. Pretty lovely all day but then rained hard in the evening once we were settled on our campsite by the sea in Alesund. Today’s drive needed 3 ferries to get us across the many fjords between Floro and Alesund. They are all expensive and price based on our 7m motorhome and 1 passenger as well as driver. ie 185.00 Isane to Starheim 214.00 Folkestad to Volda 200.00 Festoya to Solavagen Paying is easy (!), just hand over credit card, they swipe it and hand back card and receipt. Such a lot of Kroners we spent today ! Between ferries we drove through some truly wonderful countryside. Not a difficult drive (that is according to Bob who does the driving) just really interesting. Never know what is going to be round the next ... read more

Left Bergen in rather nice sunshine but weather deteriorated the further we drove and eventually we were driving in some pretty nasty rain. Cannot complain, as weather has been rather good to us so far and we have had lots of lovely sun and not much rain at all. Trouble with driving in the rain is that you cannot see the fantastic scenery around you, just all the drops of water on the windscreen. A pity as the route we took was lovely. We were basically going north up the coast but that is not actually possible in Norway with its multitude of islands, peninsulas and fjords every mile or so. Instead we had to follow a winding route over bridges, under tunnels, across fjords via ferry, all with a backdrop of high, cloud-topped mountains, masses ... read more

Woke late (can’t get off to sleep as it is so light at night!) and walked across the bridge into Bergen. This involves going up and over quite a hill as this city is only flat along the waterways. Saw some amazing boats in the harbour - one from the Isle of Man which is privately owned (we chatted to one of the crew). Can’t imagine how much money you would need to have to own something like that. Had a good wander round Bergen, mainly down in the Bryggen area which is the old, traditional wooden fishing area and what Bergen is famous for. Has had a lot of damage from fires and is now heavily protected as a Unesco heritage site. Lovely place to explore and the frontage onto the harbour is very pretty ... read more

Very early start today as a long way to travel and we knew our route involved at least one ferry. Within 5 minutes of leaving the campsite we were climbing up up and away. Spotted the Heavy Water factory when we were part way up our first mountain. It was perched on the other side of the ravine - a building of quite beautiful design and proportion. Our 200 mile drive across to the west coast was spectacular. At the end of it we had concluded that the Norwegians are like moles, and wet ones at that. They must spend half their time on water and the other half underground in tunnels. Never seen so much water anywhere (and we have been to quite a few watery places). Fjord after fjord, each one more beautiful than ... read more

Left Oslo and headed for Rjukan en route for Bergen. A bit too far to go in a day as second part of the route includes a lot of tunnels and a couple of ferries to get through the mountains and across the fjords. Rjukan is the site of the German heavy water factory which was sabotaged in the 2nd world war so Bob chose it as our stopping spot. Leaving Oslo we drove down the coast a little way and saw more and more boats. In fact we have never seen so many. The entire coastline is filled with inlets and harbours and marinas and boats, boats, boats. Then we turned inland and headed west and the scenery became gradually more and more dramatic. Lots of lakes / fjords, and some winding narrow roads, and ... read more

Day in Oslo sightseeing NORWAY Spent the day in Oslo. Went in on the scooter, carefully avoiding both the motorway and the cycle track routes. Having only a small map it was better luck than judgement that we found ourselves in the centre, near the cathedral so we parked by a cycle parking stand and walked round from there. We visited the simple but beautifully decorated cathedral, admired the round parliament building and the many fountains and statues strategically placed round the city. Took a walk up the hill to see the Royal Palace and the changing of the guard then back down to the harbour which we enjoyed immensely. A complete redevelopment of the old docks area this is now a very modern architectural marvel with some lovely use of water features, flowing shapes and ... read more

Today we left Denmark and took the 8.5 hr Stena ferry to Oslo. Overslept slightly having woken on the hour, every hour, except 7am ! No problem, packed up and at Frederikshavn we drove straight onto the ferry. Haven’t used our passports yet this trip. Took fleeces and Regatta jackets with us against the expected cold. I also packed a suntop to wear under my sweater as a vest, just in case. Came in very handy as a suntop. As soon as we were on board the sun came out and stayed out all the way to Oslo and it was exceedingly hot. Suntan unexpectedly coming on a treat. Very pleasant ferry ride. Had the buffet for lunch which was excellent and then didn’t really want anything else as we were too full. Last 2.5 hours ... read more

Weather forecast was excellent. Woke up expecting blue sky but found grey all over. It did improve later and we saw some blue sky but the wind increased through the day and the wind was icy. So that was summer then ! Used the motorhome to go out for the day as a bit too far for the scooter and that was an excellent decision as we would have frozen in that afternoon wind. Did our first shop of the trip using two supermarkets in Sindal. Had to ask another shopper which was cream (good thing everyone speaks English) as when we were in Hungary I mistakenly bought cream cheese instead ! Surprised to find beer and wine (and indeed the food) at quite reasonable prices - had been let to believe it was mega expensive. ... read more
