Loches and a very nice campsite Had a very leisurely start to the day. When we got up the sun was out and the sky blue so I walked up into the town and bought the daily baguette (and my croissant). Nice little stroll and just right to get the day going. Also good timing. Before we had finished our breakfast the blue sky had been replaced with grey clouds which rained on us. Very pleasant drive today through the lovely countryside of the Loire et Cher region. Bob decided to try out our POIs for wifi hotspots and near Blois he followed Clarissa Tomtom’s instructions to locate one. Clarissa was unaware that one particular road had been closed off and a new one built. Even so it was not her fault that the hotspot appeared ... read more

Plan B. Early in the trip I know but suddenly realised that Bob had planned in a two-night stop in Chartres and we had already spent a full day there in 2003. So we decided not to repeat ourselves and to head for Beaugency, on the banks of the Loire, instead. We often stop here. There is a free aire and it is a great overnight stop as we can walk up into the town or along the river, knowing that the Tandy is reasonably secure, as the aire is always busy, lots of people about. We took the toll road down and round Paris, waved to the Eiffel Tower on the way past and then once clear of Paris, took a much quieter road through the countryside and down to Orleans. Been this way several ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais » Arras August 25th 2010

Boiry-Notre-Dame (near Arras) Up for a very early start. Quick shower, locked the doors and off, right on time at 7am. We were taking the Euro tunnel for a change, as had managed a cheap fare on the 2pm crossing but knew we could get an earlier one, still at the cheap rate, if we arrived earlier. We had arranged to meet up for our first night’s campsite stop with friends Keith and Sue, who were heading for Italy. They were also getting the Chunnel at about the same time as us but even so it was funny when stopped at the services on the M20 for a lunch break and met them there. Came up behind them again at the Chunnel and followed them onto the train (the 12.50 1.5 hours earlier than booked) ... read more

We have been home for 4 weeks now from our 6+ week tour of Scandinavia. Just about sorted everything out in rather a whirlwind of activity. Motorhome cleaned and polished. Very few adjustments have been needed after our trip. Just fitted a passenger side Blind spot mirror and had the rear view camera wiring fixed. The garden has had an essential tidy (it looked astonishingly good to say it had been pretty well abandoned in high season). Friends and relatives have been phoned, been visited or have visited. Bob has had his 67th birthday with all his children there but neither of mine as both out of the country. I have made a few pieces of glass getting ready for Christmas rush. Fitted in a month’s worth of WI and a craft fair with my JoysofGlass ... read more

Didn’t sleep very well parked up as we were on Calais harbour as the ferries seem to ‘keep their engines running’ all night. Even so, it is an excellent spot to spend the night when we are taking an early ferry and we have used it several times. Up at 6.30 and ferry left on time for Dover at 8.35. Another smooth crossing and we were back in England by 9am having won back the hour we lost 6+ weeks ago. The drive home always seems rather tedious and I wish we could just be miraculously transported straight home bypassing the M2, M25, M1 and A50 but unfortunately we can’t. Amazingly the car, which has been sitting on the drive for 6 weeks, started first time, which meant we could put the Tandy straight onto the ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais » Calais July 26th 2010

Last day today, off to Calais in readiness for our ferry home. Not a good night’s sleep as large family occupying the static behind us, as the night before, made a terrible noise, banging and shouting until 4am. I promised the lady from the caravan across from ours that I would report at reception so did as we left. Felt very sorry for the other people in the statics round about if they get that every night and we wonder if that is why the family left us their pitch ! As it is so very built up, motorway wise, round The Hague and all points south we decided to go with the flow and take the motorways. Through The Hague and round Rotterdam where on one stretch we counted 14 lanes of motorway. At some ... read more

We decided against a visit to The Hague as possibly a bit complicated without a good map to find our way there and back again. Instead went to the coast for the day to the local resort of Schevinengen, only 5 km away from the campsite so easy scooter trip. Ha. We are confused by the bike culture here. The roads are cobbled and plastered with cycle route signs, so many that we cannot see wood for trees. Can we go down this road or not ? Is it only for cyclists ? After 20 minutes, including a few on the busy A44 dual carriageway which I did not like, surprise, we were back outside the campsite again. Second attempt did get us to the coast and that was culture shock. Great Yarmouth, Netherlander style. Miles ... read more

Leisurely start to the day on a pleasant, relaxing campsite. Showered, breakfasted then went for a stroll round the medieval (1400s) star-shaped fortress of Bourtange just a little way from the campsite. Was rebuilt, as a tourist attraction, in the 1950s and comprises the original encircling fortress of high, grass covered (and neatly mowed) ramparts in a star shape, for good protection, and a little village in the centre which has been completely renovated. Pretty spot for a short visit. We then set off for Wassenaar, seaside area next door to The Hague, where cousin Gillian lives. Set Clarissa Tomtom to avoid motorways and drove a rather scenic route for first half of the way following canals, crossing canals and as time went on, going out of our way to positively avoid the many motorways which ... read more

Went to bed really late after late night call to Australia with Jenny and Izzy. (Memo to me: as soon as we get home I will have to get my flights booked as need to be in Melbourne in time for birth of my grandson). Packed up and left in plenty of time for our ferry to Germany from Rodbyhavn to Puttgarden, which was only 10 minutes drive from our campsite. At the ferry port we were loaded straight onto the ferry behind a horse-box containing two unhappy, kicking horses and a train. Yes, really, a train. It seems that the intercity Hamburg to Copenhagen train must travel part of the way, sans rails, on the ferry. Never seen that before ! We were surprised to find ourselves out at sea within minutes of boarding which ... read more

Slightly better sleep but only because I resorted to earplugs to shut out the traffic noise. Incredibly when we got back to Tandy last night someone had parked so close that we couldn’t open our main window (and it was stiflingly hot) as it would have meant they couldn’t close their door. We headed out of Copenhagen on the motorway but then directed Clarissa Tomtom not to use motorways and she took us along some more minor, ‘straight as the crow flies’ roads right to the south of Julland to a little place called Hummingham. There is a campsite here and probably a beach a mile or so away but we stayed on site so didn’t find out what else was there. Had a swim in the rather nice pool but, as luck would have it, ... read more
