Worked out on the drive down that I have been out of the UK for 18 weeks out of the last year (5 + 3 in Australia, 3 in Thailand and 3 + 4 in France). Have tried to make the most of some good sunny and dry weather to have a relaxing 2 months of summer at home but that has not always been possible. We have been home for 2 months since returning from our trip in May / June to the French Alps and South coast. As Bob ended up in hospital in Sanary-sur-Mer the first thing we had to do on returning home was get him checked out to ensure that the severe urinary infection he had suffered there was now OK. Several doctor and consultant appointments, two courses of extra-strong antibiotics, ... read more

Home to the UK from Calais via the Chunnel and then that boring drive up the busy English motorways to Staffordshire. Always a pleasant surprise to find home just as we left it, though the garden has turned from Spring to Summer in our absence and is full of poppies. Then the boring bit. Emptying the Tandy of all food, clothes and everything else we carry with us. Sort the washing, put away the wine, open the mail, open my Folksy JoysofGlass shop. All back to normal. A very busy couple of months ahead. First of all have to get Bob checked out, as per hospital instructions, to find out why he got the infection and ensure there is no serious underlying cause. Doctor’s visit to be booked asap. Most important and exciting happening of the ... read more

Set off early, well for us anyway, after I had had my quick walk up into town to get a baguette and my breakfast croissant. Just far enough for a leg-stretch, needed as a long drive today from the Loire right up to Calais (240 miles). Kept off the motorways though a couple of times Clarissa Tomtom got a bit above herself and tried to insist. We went through Chateaudun, skirted Chartres and then drove along the Seine but the view of it is mainly obscured by buildings and trees. Horror of horrors, our route took us round Rouen, a city we had vowed to boycott after our towbar / immobiliser incident of 2009. Even worse, as we got close we found our way ahead blocked by an accident and had to take a big detour ... read more

Annoying start to the day when I was charged €2.15 for a baguette and a croissant by the campsite. Never, ever paid more than €2 before for this order as a standard baguette is €0.85. Naughty campsite. Also not good that they have no grey waste disposal on site and informed us we would find a motorhome service point in every village where could pay €1.50 to use that. Cheeky. Slowly working our way up to Calais. Taking it easy and spreading the drive over several days and not using motorways and especially toll roads. Clarissa Tomtom has expressly been forbidden to use peages. Bob tries hard to find us new routes each time to get up and down the country but getting harder now as we have travelled France quite widely. Sometimes we drive through ... read more

Brrrr..rr what has happened to the weather. Icy bite to the wind and needed the duvet to keep warm. I know that the lake is 1000 metres up but still exceptionally cold for the time of year. It will be mid-summer in 2 days ! We passed a sign which gave temperature as 11.5 degrees. Suntops have been put away and replaced by fleece jacket. We were away by 9am as no campsite to checkout of. Bob had carefully planned a drive which was part scenic and part motorway. The route via Clermont-Ferrand and the Massif Central is easy on the motorway, definitely not on the smaller local roads and we had had quite a strenuous drive yesterday. First part of the day was on the local roads, cross-country through the very pretty, pastoral country-side of ... read more

Setting of Northwards in earnest today. Only one night stops on the way from now on. Once the Tandy was packed up and as the campsite bar wifi has an excellent (and free) signal, I took the laptop down there and managed to spend a few precious minutes on Skype with Jenny in Australia. Cannot imagine what it must have been like for mothers 100+ years ago, when their children went off to the other side of the world, knowing they would not see or hear from them again for months or more probably years. We only had a 4-hour (haha !) drive so Bob said we were not in a rush but as it turned out, it was 6.30pm before we arrived at our overnight stopping spot. This was almost entirely my fault. As well ... read more

Had an exceedingly good day today. Our 16th wedding anniversary. Our present is at home – a leaded, stained glass window depicting a rainbow and a kingfisher in flight – which I made in the week before we left for this trip. Quite overcast for most of the day which actually made things easier, as we didn’t have to bother about getting burned, but Bob did wear his hat to protect the top of his head as the roasting sun managed to get through to his scalp yesterday. We scootered down to Gordes and had a proper wander round this lovely medieval little town. More people around than last night as this is a very popular tourist stopping spot. There are some very nice touristy shops and was tempted several times to buy pretty things which ... read more

First normal day for ages or it seems like it. Got up, packed up the Tandy and got on our way by 9.30. Had to do a good clean round the food cupboards as kept finding little ants. Not a lot but even one can make me itch and two can quickly make a crowd. We have enjoyed this absolutely excellent campsite and this part of the coast very much so a shame our enjoyment was interrupted by the Toulon diversion ! Very pleased though that Bob is feeling much better. We are keeping a close check on his temperature and medication as absolutely determined not to need any more hospital visits this trip. We didn’t have a long drive today – just up into the hills away from the coast and up to Gordes which ... read more

Such a friendly nurse ! Popped in at 5.30am, practised a hesitant English “good-morning” and then extracted a few more phials full of blood from Bob’s arm. At least we could wash when we got up as I had brought our things from the Tandy. I was lucky and got plum jam with my bread-roll breakfast but Bob didn’t. Shame. No problem as I had brought in bags full of lovely fresh apricots and cherries which were far better than the jam. At 11am, fortunately just before we had both died of boredom, and just before we had started to panic that we were going to be stuck in the hospital for ever, a very nice doctor appeared, obviously more senior than our man from the infectious department who had been insistent Bob had to stay ... read more

Bob feeling much better when he woke, temperature down thanks to antibiotics, and enema had worked. The staff here are great. They seem to enjoy having the novelty of an “English Patient” (isn’t that a film?) so they can try out their English on us. The lady who came to change the bed was really interesting and spoke perfect English as she had worked for a while in the US. Previously a sport’s instructor, she had had a bad accident in the mountains and while in intensive care had decided to become a nurse. We are impressed by how well the room has been cleaned. Breakfast was brought for both of us but not 5* variety – throw away bowl of coffee or tea plus bread roll and butter. Doctor appeared at 10am and decided Bob ... read more
