We hadn’t decided what we were doing with the day when we got up, fortunately as whatever we might have intended had to be abandoned. Realised that Bob was quite unwell. He had had his attack of “French Flu” well over a week before. It lasted a good 5 days and then he kindly passed it to me. We assumed at first that he had decided to have it back (though I still had the full blown variety myself). When he mentioned that, totally unusually, he’d not used the loo for about 5 days alarm bells rang and I asked campsite reception where I might find a chemist, knowing this was a public holiday ! Poor Bob had to ride the scooter 5 km down to Sanary only to find both chemists closed for the ‘Jour ... read more

Really like this area of France, of the south coast. Everything is very light, bright and floral. Also very tourist orientated and at this moment, towards French tourists, rather than other visitors, as this is a holiday weekend. All the better that the sun is shining very large and yellow in a lovely cornflower blue sky. Using the little map provided by the campsite we set off to find Bandol which is a few miles to the west on the coast. First attempt to get towards the sea took us to Sanary-sur-mer so we attempted to drive the coast road to Bandol but were thwarted at several turns as this particular area of coastline seems to be filled with some rather exclusive houses and private roads, especially any road with direct access to the sea. With ... read more

Insisted that we made an early start today as concerned that unless we arrived in good time, at next campsite, there would be no places, this being a public holiday weekend. Had phoned a couple of the 3 possible ACSI campsites but been unable to reserve for less than a 5 night stay. We managed a 9am getaway, which is pretty good for us. Unfortunately the whole world and his mate was on the road today as well and many were going in the same direction as us. We took the scenic coast road towards Toulon, at one point having to divert up a very steep, narrow and windy hill and down again to avoid a closure of the main road. Felt sorry for the man who’s car had not made one of the bends and ... read more

Excellent trip out today. We love visiting medieval villages and getting around by scooter is the very best form of travel, especially on a lovely sunny day. We can go where we want, stop when we want and also, pretty well park where we want. We scootered from the campsite, past La Croix Valmer and up and up the winding road, behind the St Tropez peninsula, to Ramatuelle. This is a lovely, well-restored medieval village with narrow streets and the lovely faded pastel coloured buildings so characteristic of this area. To add to the charm, and just for fun said the tourist information lady, there were scarecrows ‘hanging’ about all over the place. These were dressed up, some comically, some prettily and made excellent focal points for photos. Lunch today was quiche and mille-feuille from the ... read more

At least that was the plan but….. Off to rather a late start as such a friendly campsite and our neighbours on two sides were very chatty. By the time they had admired our garage and then the Tandy and Bob had loaded the scooter and thrown the storage boxes in behind it, we were well past our usual deadline of 10am to get on our way. And the garage is in an awfully untidy mess ! Quite a crawl along the coastroad past St-Raphael and Frejus. We needed a supermarket as not shopped for 9 days so found a Geant Casino. Mistake. Shop was far too big for us and as a result took us ages to find the limited selection of things we needed. As usual for French shops we queued for 20 minutes ... read more

Title of this blog sounds as if I’m about to burst into song. Just might, as it is so nice to see the sun and have a blue sky again after a full week of chilly, cloudy and rainy days. No blog for yesterday (7th June) as we did nothing at all except laze about, reading and enjoying this pleasant little campsite right on the beach. Today the weather has definitely calmed down to a much more summery feel and we woke to a bright blue sky. Scooter at the ready we set off for a ride along the Corniche d’Esterel, a dramatic drive. Didn’t get far at first attempt, just to campsite entrance in fact, when I stopped to clean my glasses under my helmet visor and realised I hadn’t put them on. Doh. Returned ... read more

We are now working to Plan C. Four days ahead of schedule we have decided to leave the wet Alps and see if we can find some more reliable sunshine on the coast. Our lovely campsite was bathed in sunshine when we got up and tempted us to stay a little longer to admire the magnificent mountain views but we were not deterred. We have several times now been seduced into mistakenly believing that a sunny start means a sunny day. We are a little sad to miss the particular highlights of this area that Bob had chosen – The Lac de Monteynard walk, The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mont-Dauphin and the medieval fortified village of Entrevaux. We will keep them on our list for next visit here, hopefully in a drier spell. Our drive ... read more

Rained all night but stopped when we got up so optimistically dressed in suntop and shorts. Soon added a cardigan. Collected the bread from reception and had breakfast just as the rain started again. Got my book and went back to bed in disgust! Fortunate that Bob woke me after I had snoozed off as the quilt was getting rained on from the half open rooflight. He woke me to suggest we moved on. What a great idea. Packed everything away, paid up and left. Noticed most others were leaving too – they were all windsurfers and rather obvious that not much wind surfing was going to be done today. As we drove the weather steadily improved and by late lunch time we had some blue in the sky and even saw a thermometer on a ... read more

Happy birthday to me. Glorious sunny day, lovely for a drive through the mountains. The traffic was slow into and out of Annecy being a Saturday and such a popular town, but once in the countryside we had no problems. Part way along the route we saw lots of police and realised a bike race was about to come through the town. We were the last vehicle through so once out the other side, being lunchtime anyway, Bob pulled over, into a lay-by and we stopped to eat and watch the race go past. Over in a flash with, probably, more support vehicles than cyclists. We drove through the outskirts of Grenoble. We have glimpsed this city once before, in 2003 when we camped in Autrans, up a mountain just to the West of Grenoble. We ... read more

Wonderful. When we woke we could see patches of blue in the sky above our heads, first we had seen in 4 days. Had a lovely ride out on the scooter, south down the lake to the bottom and then heading up the other, the East side. Stopped several times just to admire the lovely clear turquoise water of the lake and wonder why the fishermen were standing fishing when however hard we try we have totally failed to spot any sort of fish in the water. Ducks cruise past every now and then and we think this must be a pretty good lake on which to be a duck especially on a day like today with the sun shining brighter and brighter and the sky turning from grey to white to beautiful blue. Just the ... read more
