No rain today. Still very chilly start which meant we layered up on clothing before venturing out but the temperature did rise slowly through the day and we have now stopped shivering. Managed to resist putting on socks with my sandals, which was fortunate as I was wearing my cut-offs, so socks would have looked ridiculous. Possibly not the best day to chose to visit such a deservedly popular town as Annecy, on a public holiday, Ascension day, but just the way it has happened and not a problem, just rather a lot of people everywhere, tourists, just like us. Scooter is running very well, since Bob attacked the sticking choke cable before we left (the one the garage has failed to fix !). 10 km from the campsite to Annecy and we were there in ... read more

It rained all night long. Pitter patter and at times, hammer hammer, on the roof of the Tandy and when it finally stopped at 10am we realised it had been raining non-stop for 40 hours. Worse, for those on the mountains though, where the rain turned to snow. Not surprising then that it was pretty chilly all day, exactly as forecast, the temperature barely made double figures. No surprise either, therefore, that we decided to forgo a swim in the tempting campsite swimming pool. We didn’t rush to get up but waited until the rain eventually fizzled to a stop. We found our way to the lake, across the road from the campsite and down a couple of roads, and went for a walk along it. Would be really beautiful with a blue sky and white ... read more

Today’s travel blog is brief. We packed up the Tandy and drove along a fantastically scenic route through the Alps until we came to our campsite alongside beautiful Lake Annecy at St Jorioz. We believe that to be true but were unable to verify the beauty of anything as it rained all day, persistently and very hard without a single break. We have spent the last few hours checking the weather forecasts to see if we should move on elsewhere but it seems that whichever direction we go we are going to be under the very big cloud which is covering this area of France for the next several days at least. Good thing we have brought plenty of books. Shame it is too cold to use the pool as the campsite has two and I ... read more

What a lovely day and a good part of it spent several thousand metres up in the mountains. Bob had already unloaded the scooter out of the Tandy garage so we used it to get to the “Aiguille du Midi” station in Chamonix, this being the cable car ride up to the top of Mont Blanc. This is the “must do” attraction and the cable car was packed full, so much so that the driver told people to take their backpacks off to make room for the last couple he pushed in before shutting the doors. Chamonix may be a very popular winter snow destination but there were plenty of summer sun visitors today. The 20-minute ride up the mountain, courtesy of just a long length of very flexible cable, was in two parts. The first ... read more

Glorious sunny day. Absolutely perfect weather for a drive to the Alps. We slightly overslept but not a problem as not as far to travel today as on previous days. We only used a short distance of motorway just to get clear Lyon, after that we used the alternative D roads, which were quite uncrowded and truck-free being a Sunday, and headed in the direction of Geneva. An uneventful drive which took us very close to Switzerland and followed the border for several miles on the outskirts of Geneva. From here the scenery suddenly changed from quite flat and agricultural to mountainous and dramatic as we came within sight of the Alps and in particular the stunning white covered Mont Blanc. It completely dominates the landscape and we had it in view for the last 20 ... read more

Lovely and sunny day but after chill of yesterday we took our jackets with us when we went into Lyon city for the day. Campsite is excellently located as the bus stop is just outside and it runs every 20 mins. Caught the bus into the city and from there took the metro to the Cathedral St Jean stop in the old city. All very easy. We had no idea of what there is to see in Lyon but a quick check on our tourist map showed the Basilica, accessed via a funicular, from where there are superb views across the city. Then the old city below with the Cathedral and between the two rivers (Saone and Rhone) is Presque L’Il (almost an island as that is what it is) which has quite an upmarket shopping ... read more

Another full day of driving today to get well south, to Lyon. Warm, sunny weather has temporarily disappeared but confident it will be back soon. Not a problem for a driving day and it was sunny for some of it. Everything does look so much prettier under a blue sky rather than a cloudy grey one and hopeful it will be warm again tomorrow as too chilly to eat outside today. We drove through some lovely countryside heading due south. Bob had managed to find a pretty direct route which involved no motorways and the roads were generally very good. All except for a mini detour organised by Clarissa Tomtom, who decided to cut 100 yards off our route by taking us through a tiny village with very narrow streets and lots of bendy bits. Gave ... read more

Not quite as sunny a day but perfect for a day of city sightseeing. We decided to take the bus into the city rather than walking and managed to negotiate the ticketing system, not something we do often as we so rarely use public transport. Found Troyes to be a delightful city. Just the right size for a day’s visit and so much to see. Fantastically decorated and colourful half-timbered buildings everywhere we looked as well as some large, very ornate stone mansions as this was a very wealthy and thriving city of trade in the 1500s. We visited the cathedral and several churches all of which were superb with features of delicately carved stonework and vibrant coloured stained glass windows (I note that the pictures in the many of the windows were painted rather than ... read more

Woke to a gloriously sunny, blue-sky day and set off straight away heading south. We had decided not to use the motorways for this leg of the journey but Bob had had difficulty when planning the route in finding a non-motorway one which went North / South as all round the area we had to travel the roads go East / West instead to converge on Paris. Bob did find a route and the first 1/3 of it at least was quite delightful as it took us through small, immaculately kept and oh so French, villages and rolling beautiful countryside. Had to stop twice to allow the cows to cross the road and we did get stuck behind a tractor or two but on such a lovely day it didn’t matter at all. In places it ... read more

Seem to have spent rather a lot of time out of England recently. Almost as soon as we returned from our lovely motorhome trip to Brittany in September last year, I was packed and off again. Leaving husband Bob with a lot of meals in the freezer, his season ticket for Stoke City and his decorating plans, I abandoned him for 5 weeks while I flew off to Melbourne, Australia to see my daughter, Jenny and granddaughter, Isobel. Got there just in time to meet my new grandson, George Alexander, who was born just 8 hours after I landed. I flew home again 5 weeks later, after a very busy and lovely time, straight back to the freezing cold of the 2010 winter. The poor garden didn’t stand a chance as by the time I got ... read more
