Summer. How lovely. Left our beautiful pitch on the seashore in Ebeltoft (and discovered we had been charged an extra 100DKK for the location - oops). Drove ever northwards through, but not stopping in Alborg, and passing through some lovely green rolling countryside. The wild flowers along the route were brilliant : lupins (and not just blue but all shades), poppies, buttercups, thrift or something similar and pretty sure that the swathes of deep pink were wild orchids. We had planned to go towards the East and spend the night in Fjord country but changed our mind and headed straight north instead so we could explore the most northerly tip (tomorrow), especially as the weather promises to be so good. Excellent choice. Arrived at Sindal Camping early afternoon and spent the afternoon sitting in the sun ... read more

Lovely start to the day, blue sky and sunny so we walked along the beach path into Ebeltoft. Foolishly forgot our umbrella and regretted it later when it rained heavily for half an hour but the morning was beautiful and we thought summer had come. We visited the Fregaten Jylland which is a very long wooden frigate that has been completely restored. The display below decks was a bit scary as we kept coming across realistic dummies doing nasty things - lie a captain cutting a sailor’s leg off ! There was a talk about the cannons but we missed that out as couldn’t understand a word, not that is until they asked us to get behind the rope as they were about to fire one of the cannon. One big bang and a lot of ... read more

What a lovely spot to pitch our motorhome - right on the front of the campsite, almost in the sea. Gorgeous sheltered bay with a few small boats and a view across to the frigate. Shame about the rain. Drove here back onto the mainland of Denmark from Fyn Island. Avoided motorways and got to the campsite in about 3 hours. We drove through Denmark’s 2nd largest city but didn’t stop as looked too complicated to find where to park and really we prefer exploring the smaller towns and villages. So we only stopped for a drink and lunch in a lay-bye en route. Not as pretty a drive as we have done over last couple of days but everything lovely green and rolling. We found rain about half way along with a cloud which just ... read more

Culture day today as we visited a fine Danish castle. This is in the middle of the island so first we drove down the east coast and played ”who can spot the most gorgeous thatched timber-framed house”. Never seen so many beautiful buildings. Egeskov Slot is a moated castle dating back to the 1500s and is visually beautiful especially when it is reflected in the waters which surround it. Took lots of photos, from every angle and now have the problem of sorting out the best views. The castle is still inhabited but the rooms open to the public are filled with genuine furnishings and artefacts and our tour was really interesting. The hunting room has lots of mounted heads and up in the attic there is an exhibition of antique toys rather stunningly presented. Outside ... read more

Our 15th wedding anniversary. Slight change of plan today. Ended up at the tip of the island of Fyn at FynsHoved rather than somewhere down in the middle at Ringe. Grey start to the day and drive back across causeway to Jutland mainland then across the bridge to Fyn in direction of Odense was very flat, very green and not terribly interesting (I nodded off, fortunately Bob, at the wheel, didn’t !). We thought we might stop in Odense but guide book was not very helpful as to ‘attractions’ and we found ourselves out the other side before we had decided whether to stop or not. So we didn’t. Odense is famous for Hans Christian Anderson but not a lot else. We headed north up the island instead to the fishing village (town !) of Kerteminde. ... read more

Today we are on Rømø, one of the Frisian islands off the West coast of Denmark. We drove here across a 11km long causeway from the mainland. This area is the flattest we have seen - rather like Holland except the windmills here are wind turbines made of concrete and not as pretty as Dutch windmills. The wind-turbines remark is our only even vaguely critical comment about Denmark so far as we like the country a lot (and the turbines are only small ones and positioned well away from any houses). Rømø is very small being only about 6 miles long by 4 wide. Quite easy to find the sea from most points. First stop was in the south where we found an area right down to the sea which was fenced off as a nature ... read more

Visited Ribe today, the oldest city in Denmark and established in 700 because of its good location as a trading post on the river. Lovely place especially on a blue-sky sunny day. There are streets of beautifully restored buildings in the medieval quarter of the city. They should be too pretty and twee but surprisingly they are not and the whole place was a delight to the eye and also to the camera. Loved the cathedral which has some very modern paintings and stained glass. The river is also pretty and forms an island round part of the town. Unexpectedly you come across a full working water wheel in the main shopping street and then a gushing weir. All extremely tasteful and well thought out. Not a piece of litter to be seen. We visited the ... read more

Woke to a grey day but sea lovely and calm so a good crossing. Out on deck to watch our arrival into Esbjerg it was really chilly with a most un-summery arctic wind. Getting through the port meant a quick wave on our way from the customs police and we were straight out on the road to Ribe which is just about 20 miles further south. This is a very flat area and very green except for a lining of blue lupins in the verges along the way and the white of the wind turbines. That enthusiastic turbine salesman who we first came across on the North Moroccan coast has been to Denmark as well ! Our campsite in Ribe is superb. The pool looks lovely - unfortunately too chilly to try it as thought hypothermia ... read more

We have a new motorhome for this trip, one with a garage so the scooter can go inside instead of hanging precariously off the back. This is an Italian McLouis TANDY 366G and it is very smart. Let’s hope it is also reliable. Gave the garden a wave as we left as it is about to burst into glorious summer flower which we will completely miss. Also to all the baby birds which have been feasting in our garden these last few weeks, including the robin which comes to the kitchen door for suet pellets, but have left a pot of bird food and asked next door to put some out for them every now and then. Don’t normally feed after June as that is when the noisy Charlie Boys (Starlings) move in en masse. Good ... read more

Food is now bought - following major spend in Tesco as we expect everything to be even more expensive throughout Scandinavia. Have unusually bought wne and beer for Bob - normally we wait to buy it much more cheaply in Europe but costs far much more where we are going this time. Astonishingly the new motorhome cupboards we are using for food are bottomless - by that I mean that I keep feeding them food and it somehow all fits in - not that I put the food in and it falls out of the bottom ! The fridge is also double our previous one. Tomorrow is pack the clothes and everything else day. Such a big decision as to what to take apart from boots, fleece for the cold. Will it be warm enough when ... read more
