For the last day in Nha Trang we had a free morning so I headed off on my own in an attempt to see a massive white Buddha statue. Unfortunately the map we'd been given didn't have a scale on it and by the time I'd reached the Catholic Cathedral (bizarre!) and then a war memorial statue near the train station, I admitted defeat and gave up on my mission, opting instead to get a cyclo back to the beach area. I haggled my price and off we set across the main road straight into oncoming, wave after wave of mopeds! We eventually got across to the right hand side of the road and only a couple of roundabouts - with criss-crossing madness - to endure and we arrived at the beach. I spent the next ... read more

An aside to the holidaying: I bought a book while I was in Hoi An, which I have just finished reading, heavily photocopied and with some of the pages stuck together, called 'The Sorrow of War' by Bao Ninh (winner of the Independent Foreign Fiction Award). Bao Ninh was born in Hanoi in 1952 and during the Vietnam War served with the Glorious 27th Youth Brigade. Of the 500 who went to war with the Brigade in 1969, he was 1 of only 10 to survive! The novel is a harrowing story of a young, North Vietnamese man, Kien's experiences of war, love, loss and betrayal. It starts after the war has ended, during his role as part of the MIA (Missing In Action) body collection team. What a gruesome but necessary part of war that ... read more

The next day Gina and I make the trek by foot out of the Old Quarter, west to the Ho Chi Minh Museum, the Mausoleum and the Presidential Palace. If you’ve ever done this walk you’ll know that you pass by some of serious Government ministry buildings guarded by earnest young soldiers sporting arms. They look serious but as you approach them for directions, they grin and point a way down the road. Occasionally I get a salute. We are about half an hour late for the mausoleum – I say we are late because it is 30 minutes after opening time and the queue stretched for hundreds of metres. It takes a fair bit of time to get into the compound – all in single file after being searched a number of times and all ... read more

Sunday, 15th April 2012 (Day 01) My Jetstar plane touched down at Ho Chi Minh Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 8.30am this morning. Having spent a couple of days in the city in late 2010, there was a sense of familiarity as I passed through the arrivals on my way to the bus-stand. My 2 nights stopover in HCM was a bonus given that my main purpose was to visit the city of Vientiane during my 1 week break from work. While the airport bus 152 had since upped it rates from 3,000 dong to 8,000 dong (what a rip-off), this was still the most economical way for me to get to my hotel in District 1. My bedroom wasn't ready by the time I arrived at url=http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowUserReviews-g293925-d1439250-r128376074-Saigon_Mini_Hotel_5-Ho_Chi_Minh_City.htmlSaigon Mini Hotel 5 @ 196 Bui Ven ... read more

Ellen, Alex and I made our way back to Saigon especially because we have been invited to be guests of Loc to celebrate a milestone associated with the passing of Loc’s father the previous year. Normally the milestone is the first anniversary of the death and signifies the formal end of the mourning period. However in a perfect show of just how flexible Buddhism is, the family elects to slate the anniversary at 100 days because anything else would come up too close to the Viet New Year celebration of Tet. The celebration is to take place in the family’s home town of Vung Tau, a favourite weekend getaway for Saigonese looking for some beach time. As proceedings are getting underway at 9am, we arrange to meet Loc and his fiancé Truc at 6.30am sharp at ... read more

The last day in Saigon is a slow day. Ellen and Alex are trying to throw off lingering tummy bugs and I was keen that these are arrested before we undertake the next stage of travel, a lengthy trip by bus through the Mekong Delta to the Cambodian border. Loc and I meet in the evening for few beers to say goodbye. He had come back from Vung Tau earlier that day and was carrying a bag of cooked horseshoe crabs to take to a mates place for a house warming. These were a special treat rarely seen in Saigon and we devour one at the roadside café we are drinking at. The next day, after fond goodbyes to Mrs Long, we take the Phung Tran sleeping bus for a six hour ride to Rach Gia. ... read more

George: On 7th April, it’s very stormy. We go for a swim in the rain and return home and get a car back to the Hong Ngoc hotel. At night I get ill and have to move in with Mum, it’s terrible diarrhoea because I put my finger in my mouth after putting my hands on the floor near the lake. I am also vomiting a lot. We go on an overnight train to Hué for one night, the bumping around on the train doesn’t agree with my stomach. When we get there I start to feel a bit better and by the evening I’m 100% better but Dad and Ruby are both ill. (Hey! You’ve missed out the visit to the Imperial City completely here George, Ed!) Me and Mum order pizza from room service ... read more

Well I survived Room 101 but someone else did get flooded in the night (via their faulty air con) so maybe I projected it onto them - do it to Nat, do it Nat! (George Orwell's 1984 reference if you didnt' know.) Today was to be a blissful one of relaxation, relaxation and maybe a bit more relaxation thrown in for good measure. We set off from the busy port at Nha Thrang in a wooden boat with our guide for the day An and a massage/nail lady too. We were barely out of the port before our girls were sitting having their nails done. We were heading to the island of Mieu where the population are mostly children (they love big families there - up to 6 or 7 in a family is common). The ... read more

Showered, backpack off, teeth brushed after a 22 hour flight, I sit on my bed, savoring the air-conditioned cool air, and am at a loss for what to do. Simply because I have no idea where to begin. I can hear the honk of horns and the nasal melodic cries of the old woman pushing her cart through my closed window, like the city's intensity is so strong it beats itself against the glass, trying to get in. I feel excited and overwhelmed all at once and I half want to get in bed, hide under the covers, and wish myself back home and half want to dive right into the mess. Home not being an option and resting beneath a comforter in 90° heat not advisable, I take the leap. Ho Chi Minh City (aka ... read more
