With streets overrun by motorbikes merging in every different direction, ceaseless horns honking and merchants calling out and tugging at you as you push your way down the sidewalk, Vietnam can give even the experienced traveler quite a shock. But amidst the seeming chaos, the country's beauty unfolds and Vietnam becomes a charming friend with a lively personality and a kind smile. The Vietnamese are friendly people trying to stay one step ahead of a rapidly growing tourism industry. Whether you're in the countryside surrounded by rice paddies or in Ho Chi Minh City, you won't get very far without someone marketing to you. But compared to other South East Asian countries, Vietnam offers similar services but at much lower prices - cheap massages, relaxing beaches, excellent food and breathtaking countryside.

There's still a bit of rivalry between the North and South and both have much to offer travelers of all types. Whether you're starting in the North and heading South or vice versa, you'll most likely stop at various small towns and beaches along the coast. But getting around this country isn't that easy. Bus rides are long and the trains are tediously slow. Flight is a preferable alternative, given the distance between destinations. Once in town, a great way to quickly orientate yourself to a busy city is to negotiate with a i]cyclo driver for a “bicycle-drawn carriage” ride around. Some of Vietnam's most gorgeous architecture is left over from French Indochina and drivers/tour guides are eager to provide a history lesson while carting you around. While Vietnam still conjures mixed emotions in some of the Western world, the Vietnamese are quick to remind you that Vietnam is not a war - it's a country. Saigon, as it's known by the locals, has a war museum and tours to educate tourists about the conflict. But if that gets too serious, just head to the coast for beachfront nightlife and fresh seafood cooked right beside you as you sunbathe during the day.

Highlights

 • Mekong Delta See the floating markets and get a glimpse of life on the Mekong River
 • Halong Bay Picturesque boat tours through emerald waters and limestone isles
 • Hoi An A popular place to have tailor made clothes and suites made to order
 • Cu Chi Tunnels; Saigon Underground network of tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War

Tips and Hints

 • Vietnam does not provide a visa on arrival for everyone. Check see if your country is required to apply in advance for a visa.

After our heavy-going time in Phnom Penh we were definitely in need of a change of scenery and a less bleak outlook. Luckily our next destination was Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in Vietnam, another city/country that’s endured its fair share of war/oppression. Goody. After a monumentally uneventful coach journey and border crossing from Cambodia into Vietnam we arrived in HCMC mid-afternoon and quickly got dragged into a little local guesthouse by a rather enthusiastic Vietnamese man (who had already snared a Swiss couple off our bus). The room was fine and we were in no mood to [View Full Entry]

Hey yall, time for another update from SE Asia. Last week I'm sitting in the living room reading and hanging out when my house mate Jeff comes downstairs and suggested we go get a beer. We walked down the alley to our local beer/seafood/whatever stand and had some oysters and beer. After three or four 333's Jeffrey offhandedly says to me, "Hey you should come to Da Lat tonight with Anh Hieu and I." After speaking to Anh Hieu about travel arrangements, I was in. That night we caught a bus heading out of HCMC at about 11:30. Da Lat is [View Full Entry]

Hi all, The internet access is not great here so photos might have to come with the next blog. Took a private (no Mum, we didn't drive) minivan to Hue yesterday and went the scenic route. It was lovely- stopped at Marble Mountain which had amazing caves and of course marble. Bought a jade marble braclet for myself and a few other trinkets for the kids. Lots of budha statues / dragons etc made out of marble and heaps of caves and steps leading to great views. Check out pic (when posted) of a naked Dan in front of a statue....... [View Full Entry]

Day 15???? Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Hoi An
Not sure what day it is, but think we still have 9 days left of our trip. It has rained since arriving in Hoi An and plans of a boat trip along the river, a tour to My Son and various other activities have faded. We did however manage to visit the Tra Que Vegetable Village, fully organic and the farmers still work the fields manually. Enjoyed a basil seed tea and watched a tour group doing an impressive cooking class. Dan and I thought it was amazing how they grow beautiful herbs, veges etc with seaweed, water from the well, [View Full Entry]

And another corny, cliché comment from Sarah: “Time flies when you’re having fun”! This is an update of our work days over the past 7wks. Luke was lucky enough to meet a lovely Vietnamese Man; Toan, at a Guitar shop in our very early days in Hanoi. They got talking about what we were doing in Hanoi, and as a result, on Sunday November 9th, I met with Toan, his brother, and nephew at Pho 24 Restaurant on Van Mieu Street. Toan’s nephew; Son wanted Private English Lessons. The four of us chatted over ice coffees, and decided I would teach [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Vietnam knowing that we had a one hour drive to Hanoi. We soon found a taxi and negotiated a $10 fare to our chosen hotel - The Hanoi Guesthouse. There were roadworks and we arrived in the centre after 75 minutes. It is scruffy, dirty and noisy - maybe we should just go back to the airport. First stop - Hotel Omega - no we want Hanoi Guesthouse. “Same Same” as we have heard many times before. After a few minutes and having to stay firm we drove on to Hanoi Green Garden Guesthouse. Here we had stiffer [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Lao Cai train station at 6:15 AM after a pretty good night's sleep, considering I was sleeping in a tiny room with three strangers on a moving train. I thought my hotel was picking me up at 7:00, so I waited. And waited. And finally at 7:30 I figured I'd been stood up and took a minibus for 30,000 VND (1.60USD) to Sapa. This was just one of several misunderstandings I had with hotels. Well, actually, I think misunderstanding is the wrong word. More about this later. On the way to Sapa, there was a mudslide. The road [View Full Entry]

The best way to deal with the traffic is to join it! A highlight of our Vietnam trip was a day on the back of a motorbike touring the rice fields, stopping at small village markets, standing for a moment beside American bunkers left after the war and visiting the Buddhist monastery where Thich Nhat Hahn (the well known monk who along with others, was expelled from Vietnam after the war) first became a monk. Truly a place of beauty and peacefulness after the bustling cities and busy roads. Although Vietnam speaks of itself as a Buddhist country there seems to [View Full Entry]

I took a trip up to Hanoi for a long weekend. Although Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam, Saigon is still seen as the big city being the commercial centre. Hanoi is the complete opposite to Saigon, at this time of year it is 20 degrees cooler (I even had to wear a jacket), it is a lot quieter and much of it could be considered ancient in comparison. The people are more groomed and although there are the same problems with poverty and begging, more so in fact, in general it feels like a cleaner calmer city. Think Edinburgh [View Full Entry]
