Vietnam Travel Blogs

With streets overrun by motorbikes merging in every different direction, ceaseless horns honking and merchants calling out and tugging at you as you push your way down the sidewalk, Vietnam can give even the experienced traveler quite a shock. But amidst the seeming chaos, the country's beauty unfolds and Vietnam becomes a charming friend with a lively personality and a kind smile. The Vietnamese are friendly people trying to stay one step ahead of a rapidly growing tourism industry. Whether you're in the countryside surrounded by rice paddies or in Ho Chi Minh City, you won't get very far without someone marketing to you. But compared to other South East Asian countries, Vietnam offers similar services but at much lower prices - cheap massages, relaxing beaches, excellent food and breathtaking countryside.

There's still a bit of rivalry between the North and South and both have much to offer travelers of all types. Whether you're starting in the North and heading South or vice versa, you'll most likely stop at various small towns and beaches along the coast. But getting around this country isn't that easy. Bus rides are long and the trains are tediously slow. Flight is a preferable alternative, given the distance between destinations. Once in town, a great way to quickly orientate yourself to a busy city is to negotiate with a i]cyclo driver for a “bicycle-drawn carriage” ride around. Some of Vietnam's most gorgeous architecture is left over from French Indochina and drivers/tour guides are eager to provide a history lesson while carting you around. While Vietnam still conjures mixed emotions in some of the Western world, the Vietnamese are quick to remind you that Vietnam is not a war - it's a country. Saigon, as it's known by the locals, has a war museum and tours to educate tourists about the conflict. But if that gets too serious, just head to the coast for beachfront nightlife and fresh seafood cooked right beside you as you sunbathe during the day.

Saturday 28 November 2009 - The third weekend of this month I was not at home. This time I traveled with my parents and their friends to Tản Đà spa resort and Khoang Xanh. There were 42 people on the trip and I was the youngest one. It is always fun to spend time with old people at age 55 to 78 as I could learn from them a great enthusiasm and affection for life. They experienced both French and American wars, and their lives were so hard during and after the wars. I love their optimism, especially when they read [View Full Entry]

"The golden key that unlocks a thousand doors".... even this may not be enough praise for the value of learning the local dialect when traveling. When combined with with a smile and an open personality, the thousand doors easily becomes a million and more. I have been here nearly one week so far, and the initial rush of being back in asia is beginning to wear off. Although I cannot altogether discount the 3 months of intense study I undertook before I arrived, I would never have expected to learn conversational vietnamese as fast as I have. The language itself is [View Full Entry]

We set off early again and yet again we have an early 'toilet stop' at a handicapped persons (Agent Orange victims) handicraft centre - us and 20 other coach parties. Unlike yesterday I'm really impressed with the lacquer work stuff that's made here. I didn't realise that all the patterns and pictures are made with egg shells and then varnished and lacquered. If I had the room and the baggage allowance I would definitely have bought some of this beautiful work. Maybe another time. After we leave here I begin to appreciate just how big HCMC (Saigon) really is - we [View Full Entry]

Up early and off at 08:00 on a bus tour to Cu Chi. This place is famous/infamous and a place the French and the Americans who fought there will never forget. There are approx 200km of tunnels in this area dug in to red laterite clay - which hardens like iron when dry and is pretty much the same when it's wet - it was certainly rock hard walking on it today. I know we're close when we pass through a large rubber plantation - this pre dates the War and must have been replanted since. The trees all had the [View Full Entry]

Apologies for taking so long to get this one posted, iv been a bit lazy the past couple of weeks. After a delay ridden crossing of the Vietnamese border and finally arriving in Ho Chi Minh, the 5 of us were eager to make the most of the 24 hours we had before we caught the night train to Nha Trang the following evening. We found a cheap hotel for the night, went for an Indian and passed out on our beds. The plan for the following day was to go and visit the tunnels at Cu Chi where the Vietcong [View Full Entry]

I met a motorbike guide from Da Lat while waiting for the taxi ti the airport. Lots of people have told me thatb Da Lat and the Cental Highlands are the real Vietnam. Pete says so too - he does tours all the way from Da lat straight up into the mountains and jungles up the Ho Chi Minh trail, up past Khe Sanh and onto Ha Noi through the mountainous route. Sounds like I've really missed out not doing this - he says you can do Vietnam along the coast (which I've done) but you won't see the real Vietnam [View Full Entry]

From Saigon we decided to try and make an effort to do things our way, away from the tours if possible. All started well when we got a bus out to the main bus station, with a sniggering bus conductor who told us to get off way too early....we didn't quite get the joke, but did get another bus! Then on to a bus heading in to the Delta, to Ben Tre. We seemed to have managed to get away, with very few tourists around, few restaurants with English menus (possible shot in the foot!), and no hassling from touts etc. [View Full Entry]

Leaving the noisy motorbike chaos of Ho Chi Minh behind we boarded a coach to start our three day Mekong Delta trip. After a couple of hours of driving - all past a constant row of houses which lined the road the whole way, we arrived in the large delta town of My Tho. Most of the houses were constructed from which made the trip pretty uninteresting. It was here that we boarded our first boat - a long wooden one with a noisy outboard motor, and headed off to visit two of the islands in the middle of the river. [View Full Entry]

I met Nick again at the Bo Bo Cafe - he's just got back from Ha Noi and even he nearly got ripped off by the taxi drivers and they knew he could speak Vietnamese! We talk about jacking our respective jobs in the UK in - he was Civil Service and found it very constricting. He's developed more, done more and achierved far more in Vietnam. He told me about a British guy who started at the bottom in one of the big hotels and made General Manager of te hotel in 4 years without having to do all the [View Full Entry]

We were all set to slog out the 5 hour local bus to Hoi An but chickened out at the last minute. We took the 'easier' option of a 12 hour trip on a sleeper-bus. The promise of children sleeping for 10 hours or so and missing the bulk of a bus journey was too tempting to pass up. Had to hang around in Nha Trang for the 7 pm departure. It was really hot so we headed down to the beach where it was really hot. Our former hotel took pity on us and allowed us to bum around their [View Full Entry]
