The conquest of Vietnam by France began in 1858 and was completed by 1884. It became part of French Indochina in 1887. Independence was declared after World War II, but the French continued to rule until 1954 when they were defeated by Communist forces under Ho Chi Minh, who took control of the North. US economic and military aid to South Vietnam grew through the 1960s in an attempt to bolster the government, but US armed forces were withdrawn following a cease-fire agreement in 1973. Two years later, North Vietnamese forces overran the South. Despite the return of peace, for over two decades the country experienced little economic growth because of conservative leadership policies. Since 2001, Vietnamese authorities have committed to economic liberalization and enacted structural reforms needed to modernize the economy and to produce more competitive, export-driven industries. The country continues to experience protests from the Montagnard ethnic minority population of the Central Highlands over loss of land to Vietnamese settlers and religious persecution. To be updated

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRIS COOGAN!!! Yay, the Critter is turning 12! I'm so proud of you buddy. Have a great birthday. I'm moved south from Hanoi to Hue. But let's back up a bit to a really strange trip I had to Halong Bay with the Hanoi Backpacker's Hostel. So, I booked this trip knowing that there were going to be a bunch of other twenty-somethings, but I didn't really think of the fact that I am 1. not single, 2. not a drinker, and 3. not interested in general college craziness. The trip to the bay was long, 7 hours long [View Full Entry]

Guten Tag, This past week I had great fun doing many different things such as working in a different place and trying new food. But let me start telling you about Sunday. I know a german family who is living in HCMC for one year. Their name is Wahrenburg and they have two kids Gero, who is 15 and Sara, who is 12. I've seen them only once and I really liked them. (I believe I told you about when we met the first time?!) So on Sunday we decided that I should come and visit them where they live, since [View Full Entry]

Yay, dinner time.
Since I go to Ky Quang orphanage at least twice a week I take a lot of pictures. Its fun to look at the pictures a few weeks later, since they grow quite fast and I hardly notice it, since I'm there so often. You will notice that a lot of the pictures are of a baby boy we call "fat Joe". The reason for that is that Bronny (who used to be my roomie) returned home about two weeks ago and she loved Joe. I promised her to keep her updated on Joe, so here you go, Bronny! :) [View Full Entry]

Well we went out on the River Cruise on Halong Bay on Sunday & it was definitely a sight to behold! We got top deck seats - so we had a great view & could top up the tan abit aswell....we stopped at a cave along the way, then at a river cafe type thing - it was basically a floating raft with someone's house & a small table & chairs outside it with the fresh catch of the day still in their cages. It was class. There were baby sharks, salmon, trout, shrimps, prawns, crab, oysters etc.....the hosts on our [View Full Entry]

As you may have gathered, last week’s blog detailed my voyage into the main tourist hotspots of HCMC. Along with being unwitting victim to numerous scams [‘tour-of-the- city’, ‘pretty postcard for prettieeee ladiee’ and ‘can I be your Vietnamese friend’], I also witnessed various laws of physics (mainly gravity) being broken by xeom riders. I was gawped at, laughed at, pointed at, shouted at, smiled at and clapped at, sometimes all on just one street! I was rained on frequently (there’s a thunderstorm as I write), mostly when I got lost which hap [View Full Entry]

In Saigon

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City
After exploring Hoi An we headed south for Ho Chi Minh City also known as Saigon. Although the north and south are united you tend to sense a bit of seperation when coming this far south. The people here call this city Saigon (as they did in the old days) whereas those from the north call it by the new name Ho Chi Minh City in honor of Uncle Ho. The differences don't stop there and tend to center around poltics. As many of the southern citizens were put into reeducation camps after the war you can understand why there might [View Full Entry]

Transport for the whole family

We met our guide Mi in the foyer of the hotel. Like most of the H’mong people we had met, she was very short and adorably cheeky. She piled us (there were only 3 of us trekking) into the back of an old clapped out jeep. We drove along crumbling roads on the sides of mountains. Waterfalls flowed onto the road in sections and recent landslides made the drive a little treacherous at times. The scenery was marvellous! Sapa and the surrounds really do make one feel like an ant on this great Earth. Half an hour later, we pulled up [View Full Entry]
