Vietnam Travel Blogs

With streets overrun by motorbikes merging in every different direction, ceaseless horns honking and merchants calling out and tugging at you as you push your way down the sidewalk, Vietnam can give even the experienced traveler quite a shock. But amidst the seeming chaos, the country's beauty unfolds and Vietnam becomes a charming friend with a lively personality and a kind smile. The Vietnamese are friendly people trying to stay one step ahead of a rapidly growing tourism industry. Whether you're in the countryside surrounded by rice paddies or in Ho Chi Minh City, you won't get very far without someone marketing to you. But compared to other South East Asian countries, Vietnam offers similar services but at much lower prices - cheap massages, relaxing beaches, excellent food and breathtaking countryside.

There's still a bit of rivalry between the North and South and both have much to offer travelers of all types. Whether you're starting in the North and heading South or vice versa, you'll most likely stop at various small towns and beaches along the coast. But getting around this country isn't that easy. Bus rides are long and the trains are tediously slow. Flight is a preferable alternative, given the distance between destinations. Once in town, a great way to quickly orientate yourself to a busy city is to negotiate with a i]cyclo driver for a “bicycle-drawn carriage” ride around. Some of Vietnam's most gorgeous architecture is left over from French Indochina and drivers/tour guides are eager to provide a history lesson while carting you around. While Vietnam still conjures mixed emotions in some of the Western world, the Vietnamese are quick to remind you that Vietnam is not a war - it's a country. Saigon, as it's known by the locals, has a war museum and tours to educate tourists about the conflict. But if that gets too serious, just head to the coast for beachfront nightlife and fresh seafood cooked right beside you as you sunbathe during the day.

Highlights

 • Mekong Delta See the floating markets and get a glimpse of life on the Mekong River

Tips and Hints

 • Vietnam does not provide a visa on arrival for everyone. Check see if your country is required to apply in advance for a visa.

Still so immature
From Saigon we decided to try and make an effort to do things our way, away from the tours if possible. All started well when we got a bus out to the main bus station, with a sniggering bus conductor who told us to get off way too early....we didn't quite get the joke, but did get another bus! Then on to a bus heading in to the Delta, to Ben Tre. We seemed to have managed to get away, with very few tourists around, few restaurants with English menus (possible shot in the foot!), and no hassling from touts etc. [View Full Entry]

I met a motorbike guide from Da Lat while waiting for the taxi ti the airport. Lots of people have told me thatb Da Lat and the Cental Highlands are the real Vietnam. Pete says so too - he does tours all the way from Da lat straight up into the mountains and jungles up the Ho Chi Minh trail, up past Khe Sanh and onto Ha Noi through the mountainous route. Sounds like I've really missed out not doing this - he says you can do Vietnam along the coast (which I've done) but you won't see the real Vietnam [View Full Entry]

I met Nick again at the Bo Bo Cafe - he's just got back from Ha Noi and even he nearly got ripped off by the taxi drivers and they knew he could speak Vietnamese! We talk about jacking our respective jobs in the UK in - he was Civil Service and found it very constricting. He's developed more, done more and achierved far more in Vietnam. He told me about a British guy who started at the bottom in one of the big hotels and made General Manager of te hotel in 4 years without having to do all the [View Full Entry]

Walking the streets of Nha Trang
They can fight like cats and dogs but they do love each other.
We were all set to slog out the 5 hour local bus to Hoi An but chickened out at the last minute. We took the 'easier' option of a 12 hour trip on a sleeper-bus. The promise of children sleeping for 10 hours or so and missing the bulk of a bus journey was too tempting to pass up. Had to hang around in Nha Trang for the 7 pm departure. It was really hot so we headed down to the beach where it was really hot. Our former hotel took pity on us and allowed us to bum around their [View Full Entry]

The bus actually arrived in Mui Ne although an hour late and we boarded it to head to Nha Trang, although Mully wasn't allowed on untill he cleaned his feet with a bottle of water. This was our first experience of a sleeper bus which is exactly what it says on the tin. A bus with three row across the middle of it with a number of beds. We had been advised to get onto the back seats as there was more room which was true, what we hadn't counted on (nor the est of the bus for that matter) was [View Full Entry]

Saturday 21 November 2009 - Some friends visited Hanoi, so we rented a taxi and traveled 40km to two villages in Thanh Oai commune. The first village we visited was the Vác village where the locals make bird cages and paper fans. We visited 3 houses and saw the locals drying fans in the sun or making bird cages of different shapes. The next village is more interesting. Our taxi went along the Nhuệ river and we passed by Cự Khê village then stopped at the gate into Cự Đà village. This village is famous for its finely preserved architecture. It [View Full Entry]

Heading to China Asia » Vietnam » Northwest » Sapa
I'm off to China after I finish this blog and I wanted to get a quick blog off in case travelblog.org is blocked by the great Chinese firewall dragon. I've been back in Sapa, Vietnam now for about 9 days. The weather the first week was typical of this time of the year - cold, cloudy, foggy, drizzly ... The last two days though have been stellar - clear and "warm". One thing that amazes me is how many people remember you when you come back to Sapa. They must meet hundreds if not thousands of tourists a year and yet [View Full Entry]

The weather is exceptionally good today - apparently this is more like Spring for them. At least the locals won't keep asking me if I'm cold in just a T-shirt today. This time of year is very cold to them - cold at 14C! I try to explain that I would not take the heat when it's hot like they can but the women still think I'm going to catch a cold. I walk throught the town along the river and notice a boy with crippled legs shuffling about selling nuts, 2 old women in ;ong slim boats with eyes painted [View Full Entry]

Milla and the view from our hotel in Dalat
We all really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and cool climate of Dalat. While we were loving getting around in t-shirts in 20 degrees, the locals were breaking out the winter gear including beanies, mittens, scarves and down jackets. Our hotel was appropriately named the 'Dreams' hotel and was pretty much the perfect hotel. Beautiful rooms, spotlessly clean and with an owner who would quietly do anything for you. Taxis would materialise out of nowwhere, bus timetables were recited from memory and tickets booked with a phone call, with the added bonus that you just new she was quietly ins [View Full Entry]

Ring that bell

I arrived back in Ho Chi Minh City after a four week visit in the UK. I had just started to get used to the flights, I have done it a few times now, but then they threw me a curve ball. Having got used to a selection of movies to watch on the interactive entertainment system, well it stops me getting bored, I then found myself on an old Air France 747 which only had a central screen. I knew there would be a movie, but this new concept (or old really since interactive entertainment is quite new) meant you [View Full Entry]
