Vietnam Travel Blogs

With streets overrun by motorbikes merging in every different direction, ceaseless horns honking and merchants calling out and tugging at you as you push your way down the sidewalk, Vietnam can give even the experienced traveler quite a shock. But amidst the seeming chaos, the country's beauty unfolds and Vietnam becomes a charming friend with a lively personality and a kind smile. The Vietnamese are friendly people trying to stay one step ahead of a rapidly growing tourism industry. Whether you're in the countryside surrounded by rice paddies or in Ho Chi Minh City, you won't get very far without someone marketing to you. But compared to other South East Asian countries, Vietnam offers similar services but at much lower prices - cheap massages, relaxing beaches, excellent food and breathtaking countryside.

There's still a bit of rivalry between the North and South and both have much to offer travelers of all types. Whether you're starting in the North and heading South or vice versa, you'll most likely stop at various small towns and beaches along the coast. But getting around this country isn't that easy. Bus rides are long and the trains are tediously slow. Flight is a preferable alternative, given the distance between destinations. Once in town, a great way to quickly orientate yourself to a busy city is to negotiate with a i]cyclo driver for a “bicycle-drawn carriage” ride around. Some of Vietnam's most gorgeous architecture is left over from French Indochina and drivers/tour guides are eager to provide a history lesson while carting you around. While Vietnam still conjures mixed emotions in some of the Western world, the Vietnamese are quick to remind you that Vietnam is not a war - it's a country. Saigon, as it's known by the locals, has a war museum and tours to educate tourists about the conflict. But if that gets too serious, just head to the coast for beachfront nightlife and fresh seafood cooked right beside you as you sunbathe during the day.

Highlights

 • Mekong Delta See the floating markets and get a glimpse of life on the Mekong River
 • Halong Bay Picturesque boat tours through emerald waters and limestone isles
 • Hoi An A popular place to have tailor made clothes and suites made to order

Tips and Hints

 • Vietnam does not provide a visa on arrival for everyone. Check see if your country is required to apply in advance for a visa.

Day 13 Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Nha Trang
Our last full day in Nha Trang was a busy one, so much so that we might all be in bed by 8pm! I (it's Kylie here) started the day at 6am with a trip around the local food markets with the hotel chef. It was very interesting and I sampled and saw lots of great, fresh produce - the pork belly this morning was piping hot and unbelievable as were the freshly made fish patties. Fish, frogs, eggs of all kinds, beef- the darkest coloured beef I have ever seen, it looked a bit like venison, wonderful pork, amazing yellow [View Full Entry]

6 & 7 December 2009 - Pleiku was our final destination on the 5-day trip. This city is the capital of Gia Lai province. Again we had to go by mini bus, but this time the distance from Kon Tum to Pleiku is only 50km. There were 23 people inside the 16 seater mini bus and it was fully packed. I couldn't move my legs for one and a half hours. At one section the road was under construction, so the mini bus couldn't go too fast. At least we felt safe, even though it was uncomfortable. Ticket is also cheap, [View Full Entry]

Hüh.. äh... Hue Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Hué

Phu Quoc Island Asia
So we crossed the river over the Phu Quoc Island by the ferry on Saturday, took about 2 and half hours, luckily they put some films on, expecting some random vietnamese film we were shocked when they put on Rambo!! Although it was dubbed, we knew the story. Once arriving at the port we had to get transport to the beach resort area called Long Beach that we wanted to stay on. There are a few other beaches around the island but they are prety desserted, some you cant even visit on certain times and days as they are controlled by [View Full Entry]

During the American War, considerable fighting took place in 3 provinces (Dak Lak, Kon Tum and Gia Lai) which I visited on this trip. In the spring of 1972, the area in and around Kon Tum province was devastated by hundreds of US B-52 raids during the course of a major battle. You may have heard about the Charlie Hill, which was the famous site of the battle in Dak Tô - Tân Cảnh. Kon Tum city is the capital of Kon Tum province. There are more than 10 ethnic minority groups in this province, for example, Bahnar, Jrai, Sedang, Rengao [View Full Entry]

Day 10 Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Nha Trang
So it must be day 10 now (feels like a month already though). Spent yesterday at the beach, a private bar / club beach where hawkers had to yell their wears from beyond the 'No Hawking' signs lol. Kylie had her hand and toe nails manicured and painted and a foot massage which even though it cost about $15 she thinks she could have got it cheaper. A local lady selling fresh lobsters, cooked on a tiny bbq-thing right in front of you, was yelling out to us and the temptation to have a whole, fresh lobster and 8 scallops all [View Full Entry]

Crossing Over Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville
Hello!! When we last updated, we were in Sihanoukville - we loved it so much we ended up staying there for almost a week! Somewhere in the middle there, we decided to take a break from the beaches and beggers so we booked ourselves a tour of the surrounding islands. After an early start (8am) we made our way out the front of the guesthouse expecting to be greeted by a bus full of tourists having the same idea we had. To our suprise, it was just us and a Israli women named Tanya. after a quick breakfast, we headed to [View Full Entry]

trekking phase - day 1 to 5 Asia » Vietnam
Day 1... We woke up early in the morning to have our last restaurant breakfast, most had chocolate and banana or pineapple pancakes. Then after last minute packing and dumping of excess items in our upstairs room we wandered over to Phat Tire to start our trek. As soon as we walked in the door we meet our three lovely (and in some cases gorgeous) guides: Dinh, Linh and Minh (who we called 'Candy' or 'Candyboy' etc.) They gave us our tents, food and water to refill our newly emptied bags. Then we all hopped into our minivans and headed off [View Full Entry]

Vietnam - Highlights! Asia » Vietnam
3rd - 13th December 2009 (10 days in Vietnam) Rather than boring everybody with details about mine and Narj's 10 days in Vietnam, I figured I'd attempt to summarise some of our highlights during our time here. We flew into Hoi Chi Minh City (which was known as Saigon and kinda still is) then our route consisted of catching a daytime bus to Dallat, then a day bus to Nha Trang, then an overnight bus to Hoi An then finally a plane to Hanoi. I feel like we have done quite a lot of travelling up the country but it hasn't [View Full Entry]

Day ? Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Nha Trang
Yesterday we visited the Cu Chi Tunnels which pretty much took up the whole day. We engaged our own driver for the day so there was plenty of flexibility with toilet and food stops for the kids and they could be as loud as they liked. It worked out well as when we arrived at the tunnels, a guide took us around (with another group from Mt Gravatt can you believe) free of charge. I have to admire the ingenuity of the Cu Chi people as the underground system they constructed was amazing, and what's more, it clearly worked for them. [View Full Entry]
