... read more

I suppose it's obvious that if I hang around in S.E. Asia for long enough I'm eventually going to hit the rainy season. I didn't anticipate this being a particular issue since most of my experiences involve a few hours of downpour swiftly followed by the resumption of normal sunny service. I was wrong. As soon as August came in it was like a switch was thrown and the rains began. There was no gentle introduction. The rains came in swiftly and heavily, producing 3 or 4 days of unremitting deluge then a brief respite then more days of consistent and persistent rainfall. Our hearts went out to all the time limited travelers who had to stick to a timetable to make it work. Fortunately, our schedule was somewhat more flexible, and we had a new ... read more

It's a tough life out here... 16 August, Wednesday... We got into Nha Trang super early (6am - what is it with this fascination of doing things in the morning) and headed pretty much straight for the beach after buying some rather undersized beach towels. This was a very lazy day but had been a bit lacking in sleep. Not so much Vietnamese food on offer here, though still available, so went for a mexican - chicken in Coca Cola sauce, mmm mmm lovely. Beers in the evening and fell asleep on a sunlounger... 17 August, Thursday... ...only to be woken up by hundreds of Vietnamese people who'd flocked to the beach to do exercise and watch the sunrise, so at least I got to see the sunrise too! After that some proper sleep was in ... read more

Where NOT to stay and book Halong bay trips! Sorry to start this entry in a negative way... But first just a quick note to any backpackers planning on visiting Hanoi and staying in the old qaurter... I can highly recommend that you DON"T stay in Darling Backpackers guesthouse... The rooms are in desperate need of a good clean, they attempt to rip you off with any visa requirements, lose and destroy your laundry. They also organise a rip off tour to Halong bay where you do not get what they advertise. On the Halong bay tour you have to share your cabin with rats, who crap on your bed, you get to 'kayak' at 6am for fifteen minutes with an inflateable floating device and broken oar. then only to be dumped on a crapy island ... read more

22nd Aug 2006 Saigon, Nha Trang and Dalat Hi everyone After Hoi An I got on a overnight bus to Nha Trang, Vietnams beach capital. Very large and beautiful beach, miles in either direction. The day that I arrived I spent checking out the town and lying on the beach. That same morning I met a "Easy Rider" a member of a local motorcycle gang. There is about 40 members they specialize in taking tourists to places where normal tours would not get too. The next day I had him take me around the countryside (a ethnic village, a waterfall where I took a dip, a crocodile farm, a whole day of touring around. The two of us got along so well he convinced me to sell my bus ticket to Dalat and ride with him. ... read more

Das heisst Ha Long uebersetzt.

We took a short day trip to see the De Militarized Zone or what was left of it after the Americans had finished! It was interesting to see the Vietnamese version of how the events of the war of the North against the South unfolded. The DMZ stretches for around 5 km either side of the Ben Hai River. This river is the official border between the North and the South of Vietnam. It is quite interesting how petty it used to get between the two regions. The North would paint the bridge one colour, then the South would re-paint it another. This continued back and forth until they agreed to actually divide the bridge and paint each respective half their preferred colour. Other ways in which they would compete were: building and rebuilding flag towers ... read more
