Our first night train in Vietnam was very good - unfortunately Matt was in a different carriage, but Claire and I were very lucky with the company in our compartment: 2 very friendly vietnamese couples and a very well behaved toddler - whinged a lot less than Matt! We arrived in Hue mid morning and saw a lot of celebrations for Vietnam day on the way to our hotel. We took the much-recommended motorbike tour from the Cafe on Thu Wheels in the afternoon and saved lots of money as entry to the Citadel and all the tombs is free on Vietnam Day - cashback! Minh, our tourguide, was very funny and very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the tour - the best part was riding out to the countryside to see a bit of rural life ... read more

So I haven't written in a bit. I think I have a lot to update. Pardon my typing - the keyboard in one of the only working internet places in Sapa is a little sketchy. No pictures this time but I'll try when I'm back in Hanoi with wireless/my laptop. The internet cafes everywhere are packed as theinternet and relative openess towestern culture is relatively new in Vietnam. I wish the car horn was never invented. For all you North Americans reading who have never been to SE Asia (or developing countries for that matter) its out of control. Even in the quietest of remotes the car horn blares and blares and blares for what apparently seems to be no reason. Even on motobikes (which there are three gazillion of in this country - Honda must ... read more

To quote the great Gandalf, a wizard is never late, he always arrives precisely when he means to. If I was a wizard, I would throw the whole wizarding world off kilter for sure. It's been months since I've last updated my blog. Sure, I could say I've been busy (cause I have, a new job, a new house, etc.) or I could go into more details like, "with my new job it's harder to find the time or the internet connection to update my blog regularly". But neither would be the truth, and I don't want to be un-truthful anymore. This blog has gone un-attended to for so long because of some MAJOR changes in my life, that most of you reading this are already aware of. First, my most recent post is from the ... read more

Saigon. ... read more

Halong Bay was one of the major highlights of our time in Vietnam. We opted for a 2 day trip which turned out to be just long enough for us. Our boat was much nicer than expected and the cabins were very cute. We visited caves & floating villages, sunbathed, jumped off the top of the boat (nearly 5m - quite scary!) and did some (highly unsuccessful!) kayaking. The weather was great, the water was really warm, and we had a lovely group. Sitting up on deck after dinner was a really memorable experience - great chat, a few Halida beers, shooting stars and singing silly songs about cyclo drivers. "Sunday morning, on my cyclo/ With my girlfriend, 100 kilo..." - apparently the Vietnamese version is very popular with cyclo drivers!... read more

well this is it my second to last day of the program!!! only today and tomorrow left and a new volunteer arrives at the house tomorrow ( her name is carrie) i really cant believe how quickly it has gone and i want to stay for much longer! it seems pointless to go back to uni when i could be doing so much better here! but as long as one person leaves another person arrives and it really doesnt make that much difference to the children because they are so used to change anyway! the most important thing (i have come to realise..) is that while you are here you are making a small difference to their lives by teaching them and having fun with them! its so hard to leave after such a short time ... read more

So I decided to head back to Singapore again since I loved it so much the first time. I arrived around 11pm, and went straight to the hotel. I got changed and went straight to Clarke Quay to meet some friends at the club MOS. I think I was there by midnight.... haha Linda came and met me out the front, and introduced me to her friends. It was a crazy welcoming night, and we all got wrecked. I woke up with yet another hangover (it appears that Singapore has this effect on me), and that evening met up with Linda again. We went to Boat Quay for dinner, and met up with Jason and some of his colleagues. We went back to MOS and clubbed away. There was a little drama later that night in ... read more

Angekommen, erzaehlt uns der Park Ranger, ... read more

After a short flight from Korea, It soon became apparent that any expected regional similarities ended somewhere in the departure lounge. The sight of red-roofed ochre buildings peppered across a broad sweep of vivid green rice paddies sent chemicals of joy flooding through my body in anticipation. In retrospect these undistinguished fields and dishevelled dwellings won't even rouse a reaction in the following weeks. But after six months in Seoul, seeing the world through grey-tinted glasses, my captivated mind feasts on the colorful banquet in feverish desperation. It is not by chance the colour green symbolizes nature, life-energy, vitality and ...GO! The taxi driver pulls up to the entrance of our requested hotel, and as I open my door I'm pounced on by a smartly dressed man who informs us it's full, though of course they ... read more
