Sapa We hopped onto an overnight train and headed for the small town Sapa close to the Chinese border. On the two hour bus ride from the train station up to Vietnam's highest town some 2000m up we were treated with some fantastic views of the surrounding area and rice terraces. I know rice terraces are not the most exciting thing in the world but the views were awesome, the terraces stretched up the mountain sides like giant steps covered in mist. That day we met a crazy Australian guy who kept buying beer for everyone in the hotel and insisted that we went out. With me feeling ill Alan went on his own and the last thing I remember the Ozzie saying was I'll show you Brits how to drink... Funny really as Alan ended ... read more

Wir ... read more

I think this is the first time that I've actually left the real date on an entry! I'll try to make this shorter, but i have so much geography to cover. We'll start with the overnight train to Hue. What was supposed to take 12 hours took about 16, but that's no real surprise in this part of the world! We were travelling with James and Ray, but we couldn't get a sleeper car all together - there were two together and two random tickets. Being the gentlemen they are, they gave Melissa and i the option of sticking together, which we happily accepted. Our "roommates" were a lovely British couple called Katie and Greg, and the six of us passed the first few hours chatting over some beers. It was a pretty cool experience - ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Da Nang August 24th 2006

So, jetzt bin ich allein unterwegs. On the road. ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta August 24th 2006

22 August, Tuesday... We had decided to leave Vietnam with a tour of the Mekong Delta before heading up the river into Cambodia as we're sick to death of buses, although it is a malarial area so could die of something worse (don't worry, I got me pills). The tour itself set off early, as they always seem to, so another early start for us and nfortunately while fumbling to switch off my alarm I dropped and broke my camera so you'll have to rely on Thom's photos for the moment. We met the very friendly and chatty Mr Tung, our tour guide, and set off for the dock to hop on our first boat. The river is about as muddy as the Thames but the scenery is quite a bit better (if you prefer countryside ... read more

Halong bay Well after a miserable rainy few days in Hanoi we decided we could not put off the halong bay trip off any longer and decided to book through our hotel (Darling back packers - bad choice!). Luckily we had timed our trip perfectly and the weather was great, after waiting around for what seemed like hours in the scorching heat, watching the complete chaos of all the boats trying to push their way through to the harbour, we boarded and set off. Halong Bay is beautiful; it is a complete maze of limestone cliffs protruding at random intervals from the sea. The rock formations are staggered with cracks and steps making this place a rock climber’s heaven. The scenery was reminiscent of Koh Phi Phi in Thailand, however unfortunately the water did not look ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi August 23rd 2006

Hanoi We stayed in the Old Quarter. It's a virtual rabbit warren of narrow streets occupying that part of the city, full of stalls and locals selling fruit, veg and chickens on the street. Of the week we spent here we managed to get lost at some point each day, the maps provided by the lonely liar (lonely planet!) and the local hotels all differed from each other, only showing some of the roads making navigation somewhat of a challenge! Fortunately while we were lost there were ample opportunties to sample the local beer hoi (fresh beer) which at less than 7p a glass is one of the cheapest pints in the world and with no addatives or preservatives leaves you hang over free! For the first time in Asia we are finding the locals particularly ... read more

Not so impressed with this town, its apperently honeymoon haven for the Vietnamese, but a bit tacky and not much to see. However we took a tour outside of the city which was wonderful. Managed to fit in rose gardens, coffee plantation, waterfalls, silk worm factory, lunch at a local house, a mushroom farm and corn house and some other sites in one day, and our motorbike drivers had fantastic english and were good company.... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City August 21st 2006

21 August, Monday... Our little bus pulled into Saigon (apparantly how the locals still refer to it although Thom did manage to offend someone) sometime between 5 and 6 this morning. Did the usual runaround of hotels before picking one because we got fed up and wanted a shower. Went to the market and started haggling over a fake Rolex, is $10 too much?, but didn't buy in the end. Food in a restaurant Bill Clinton has eaten in (pretty big spending about 70p for mine) and a wlk to Notre Dame cathedral. But I'm not so impressed with churches these days, or the colonial post office next door. The Independance/Reunification Palace, depending on where you read, is probably not worth the 50p entrance fee I'd say, it just looks like a government building, although some ... read more
