So my second to last day in Sapa I took an all day trek which took me through three ethnic villages. It was great. Minus the ocassional "buy from me's" from the Flower Hmog we got to see how they lived, where they went to school, etc. It was about 45 degrees C out and I was sweatiing profusely. It was funny... our "tour guide" for the trek took his digital camera. Apparently it was the first time that he did this.. he was more like a tourist then a tour guide,. He stopped about every 45 seconds to take pictures of the scenery with his girlfriend. Then back to the hotel. I wanted to leave Sapa a day earlier but they couldn't change my train ticket (I cancelled the tour and only took the ticket). ... read more

So we have finished our tour in 'Nam, did some patrolling, sniping, infiltration of native population and recon of key sites. Although we didn't know exactly what to expect of Vietnam, mostly we'd heard good things, so we were looking forward to our tour of duty. It was pretty good but - and we suppose it had to happen after 10 months of travelling - we came away a little underwhelmed. Feels like we had similar and better experiences elsewhere in SE Asia. the weather played a big factor in our enjoyement and it seemd to rain more than not - even though the Lonely Planet AKA The Book of Lies told us we should be fine sticking to certain places. Perhaps we got off on the wrong foot, and, as they say, first impressions last ... read more

Many stories have been told about Vietnam, most of them had to do with the war, but mine has to do with the people and the progress of the human spirit to overcome tragedy and adversity and shine through. Well, after this Hemingway-ish intro, let me tell you about my tour in 'Nam. It all started many years ago for me, and my ever incresing interest in Vietnam and the war fought there by the USA; so, I decided to go there myself and see how it was. I was living in Korea at the time, so the flight there was only 5 hours and pretty cheap. You have to apply for a tourist Visa in advance, which my travel agent did through the Vietnamese embassy in Seoul. Visa and plane ticket in hand I made ... read more

Evening all, How's things? Hope you're all fine and/or dandy. I must say I've been rather tired coming into the final week of my time in Vietnam, and am feeling a little burnt out. I find these short business stints rather difficult I guess because there's so much to deliver whilst you're here, so it's a bit non-stop. You do have to take breaks though, otherwise you will go postal and do something drastic, like I dunno, clean out the mini bar of its contents and then dance around your hotel room to kitsch 80s pop (not that I did that of course....). That being said, I'm feeling better this monday evening after taking the day off for a public holiday here. It kind of took me back to the nostalgia and more halcyon days of ... read more

Arrived safely in Hanoi after a very eventful bus journey from Ventiane! The 'VIP' bus turned out to be not so VIP. It broke down before we even started and we had to wait until it was fixed which took a couple of hours. For some reason we were taken by minibus to pick the bus up from the side of the road further down the route. By that time all the best seats had gone (taken by the locals who had been allowed on at the bus station) - so we all got relegated to the back rows where you couldn't recline the seats and had to spend the whole 24 hours in a sitting up position! In addition, the aircon wasn't working properly, which just added to the discomfort! We got to the border ... read more

Okay, our final 3 days… We made it back into Vietnam, with my THIRD visa for the country - grrr. A bit of a tip for anyone going to Vietnam thinking they might stay longer than the one month allowed, just get the three month multiple-entry at home, it is NOT cheaper in Vietnam, and NOT easier, despite what we’d been told! Anyway, Ho Chi Minh City is a bit busier and more hectic than Hanoi, but we felt comfortable and at home being back in Vietnam after our 2 weeks in strange countries. We took a few day-trips into the Delta, and had some nice boat trips along the Mekong and into its little canals. We also visited the Cau Dai temple in Tay Ninh, which was a really fantastical building. The religion is a ... read more

well I have finally left Tam Ky and it was a an emotional last day but i kinda knew that id be going back to pick up the rest of my bags so it wasn't as bad! Felt really strange leaving though because it did become my home but once again i was stepping out alone to do some travelling with no plan really as to where i was headed! my friend lam booked me a bus ticket for nha trang which is about 500 km south of Tam Ky so i was taken by mrs hahn and anh (a guy who came to same goodbye to me, who i taught, but he also helped out at the Home of affection). In true vietnamese style it was an hour late so i stood there having a ... read more

Ok, so to finish up Cambodia... We went to the Killing Fields and Secret Prison of Pol Pot and the Khmeir Ruge. At the fields Pol Pot killed about 3 million people, from young kids to adults. There is a Stupa in the middle with over 8000 human skulls in it. The guy that was our guide was telling us how Pol Pot would kill these innocent people. And believe me, how he did it was rather gross. He would have them tortured, raped and killed. There is 84 mass graves at the fields and when you walk around them you will see the real bones and real clothes. Its a really really bad feeling there. But we went on to the S21 secret prison where Pol Pot would have the prisoners tortured, interrogated and killed. ... read more
