In my attempt to take "every form" of transportation possible I decided to take the slow way into Cambodia. This involved mini bus, air-con bus, slow boat, and ferry all in one trip. I was also hoping that I would meet some people I could travel with through Cambodia because I just finished a book called "Sex, Drugs, & Ganja: Off the Rails in Cambodia," which had me a little scared. The trip to Phenom Pen was to take three days with stops to the the candy factory, lunch at a village, a trip to a floating market, a visit to a crocodile farm, a trraditional rice factory, and a visit to a temple overlooking the Vietnam/Cambodia boarder. While on the trip I also tried snake springrolls, watched a family butcher a cat for dinner, and ... read more

Tuesday 12th September 2006 Today were heading to the DMZ, unabbreviated the De-Milerterized Zone. This was the main reason for us stopping off in Hue. The Ben Hai River served as the border between North and South Vietnam during the war and 5km either side of the river was the DMZ. It spread the entire width of Vietnam, from the Loas border to the South China Sea. Ironically, it became one of the most militarized areas ever. It was a few ours north of Hue so we took a tour to check it out. We visited several areas, namely the sight of former Khe Sanh combat base, ‘The Rockpile’ and Dakrong Bridge. We also got to observe, how high up on the mountain tops despite efforts of reforestation, the top of the mountains remain bare of ... read more

Travel over the last few days has involved various extremes which has seen us leave the comfort and sun of Nha-Trang for the rain and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City. We stayed in Nha Trang for about 5 days of beach bumming fun, and thoroughly lived it up. After the effort it took to get there we settled into a nice routine of lie-ins, sunbathing, beach footy and fine dining. The best day there (and my personal favourite) involved a very leisurely morning on sun loungers, sipping beers, eating mangoes and developing melonomas. After an inexpensive and tasty lunch in a bar full of package tourists (who'd paid through the nose for their holidays; Idiots) I decided to have a go at Wakeboarding. It cost a fairly expensive 16quid but was worth every penny. Like ... read more

The last few days in Ho-Chi-Minh-City have been very educational and emotional. After visiting both the War Remnants Museum Reunification and the Cu Chi Tunnels I feel that I have a better understanding of the struggles faced by all men who fought in the Vietnam Conflict. The War Remnants Museum was filled with pictures and stories about what men and women faced on all sides of the conflict, and it was very moving to see the dedication that both the north and the south had for their cause. The Cu Chi Tunnels are where the Viet Cong lived for 5 years underground after the napalm campaign killed on the trees and plants. In addition to climbing through the tunnels, we ate a traditional meal of tapioca root and nuts (yuck!), saw the various kinds of traps ... read more

Ok. Before I go into my madness in Hoi An I want to update everyone on a decision I have made.... In the end of September I am meeting my dad in Spain or maybe Italy?? to gallivant around for about 10 days. Then in October I have the amazing opportunity to travel around Spain for 18 days with my wonderful and generous grandma and my mom and Aunt Valerie. After these adventures conclude, I have decided to move to England and work there for between 4-6 months. I have found a program where I can get a work Visa because I am a recent graduate and I have decided to try and find a job in London. It’s something that I never could have imagined doing, but I have met so many amazing people and ... read more

07/09/06 - 10/09/06 Hanoi and Halong Bay We started our Hanoi tour with a visit to the outside of the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum where “'Uncle Ho' is respectfully preserved” and the House 54 and House on stilts where he lived. I put my rucksack on the ground and bent down to rummage in my bag to change my camera lens. I was immediately told to stand up straight by a guard of the mausoleum. It seems that my squatting position was too similar to the position in which Vietnamese people do their personal business and was very disrespectful in such proximity to the Mausoleum. We were shown the bedroom of 'Uncle Ho' by our guide who explained that the bed was single because Ho Chi Minh “never married or had any children.” How interesting considering ... read more

Monday 11th September 2006 It wasn’t a peaceful night’s sleep. The Vietnamese train almost sounded like it was falling to bits as it swayed to and fro. Eventually we arrived in Hue, as we exited the station there was ‘our’ man waiting for us, holding a big sign with our names written on it, so much more simple booking ahead than having to fight off all the touts saying “You wan room”. We dropped off our bags at the hotel and headed straight out for breakie. Just a few doors down from the hotel was Café on Thu Wheels, a place that we had read about in the Lonely Planet, this was almost like an Aussie outback pub, with graffiti, messages and trinkets covering every wall, including the ceiling. It was very friendly too. We headed ... read more

Country number 4...Vietnam; new country, new language and most importantly new beer. First of all apologies for the length of this blog entry....lots to say! We decided after much discussion, reading and talking to other travellers to bypass the over trekked Saigon to Hanoi route of Vietnam (up the spine of the country) in favour of touring around the south (The Mekong Delta & Saigon) and the north (Hanoi, Halong Bay & Sapa). Time is limited and this is one long country, so with this in mind we left Phnom Penh to travel by slow boat to Chau Doc in Vietnam. Step one was a comfortable if snug minibus from our hotel to the bus company. We waited a while there and chatted with a tuktuk driver who spoke better Irish than most leaving certs, after ... read more
