Hello! Time to blog again: this time you find us in the Vietnam capital Hanoi, where we are hanging around sweaty style before the next leg of our trip and a 24 hour journey (inc 11 exciting hours in Bangkok airport) to Bali. Our last update was from a soggy Mui Ne - where we succeeded in getting up for our 5am Sunrise trip to the dunes - which is more than we can say for our driver Carlos (I have no idea how to pronounce, let alone spell, his real name) who was "almost apologetic" when he arrived at 5:45. Anyway, we sped off to the dunes in our 4wd to see a "little bit after the sun had risen but still quite nice" sunrise over the red sand dunes. Very nice bar the 10 ... read more

Sapa We hopped onto an overnight train and headed for the small town of Sapa close to the Chinese border. On the two hour bus ride from the train station up to Vietnam's highest town some 2000m up we were treated with some fantastic views of the surrounding area and rice terrarces. I know rice terraces are not the most exciting thing in the world but the views were awesome; the terraces stretched up the mountain sides like giant steps covered in mist. That day we met a crazy Austrailian guy who kept buying beer and vodka for everyone in the hotel and insisted that we went out that night. Unfortunately due to some of the dodgy food we ate on the Halong Bay boat trip Tony was quite ill and would not leave the safety ... read more

Evening all, How's things? Hope you are all fine and/or dandy. For all those that aren't aware, I'm currently in Vietnam for work at the moment and will be for a few weeks. It's kind of a prelude to what will hopefully materialise into a long term stay, but we see how we go. I've been in vietnam for a week now, and I would have written earlier, but I must admit it's harder to work up the desire and inspiration to write when your mind is elsewhere for the most part (and by elsewhere I mean working). I have settled in reasonably quickly and have developed a fondness for Vietnam for one very simple reason: FOOD! My long days are thankfully broken up by 3 moments of pure bliss named breakfast, lunch and dinner. My ... read more

Hi All!! How are you doing!! It's been a month since our last update, and quite a hectic one it's been. Accompanied by the wonderful Robyne (Daniel's mum), we have covered Vietnam bottom to top, and I can tell you we have made the most of it alright. A beautiful country with beautiful people who (in contrast to the Cambodians) have moved on from the atrocities of their war torn past, and are happily going about their day to day lives. In the countryside this involves lots of rice, growing vegetables and fattening up cows, chickens, pigs, and yes, dogs (more about that later) - life here doesn't seem to have changed much in the last millenium or so, with women wearing pointy straw hats going back and forth on their cycles, people working the fields ... read more

Apologies for delay in stories and news and photos! All I seem to be doing is working again so not much of interest has been happening of late. I then tend to forget how much I enjoy writing my blog so happy to be doing it this sunny sunday afternnon! The weather has actually been quite cool recently, although the evil sunshine does tend to pop its ugly head out during the weekends, which means my plans for walking around the city running errands is completely foiled! For those that don't know, I'm taking antibiotics that react with sunlight to cause a phototoxic reaction (??) so I have been covering up like a proper Vietnamese girl! During the week I'm always at school and in the mornings when I drive to work it's quite cool and ... read more

Sorry about the recent radio silence everybody! Blame Claire and Matt - I've been too distracted over the last 2 weeks to write any decent journal entries or blog entries. Also...Claire took all the photos in Hanoi so this page is a bit boring :-( I'll start at the start, in Hanoi... My first experience with AirAsia wasn't too bad, although I should warn anyone changing terminals in Bangkok to wear a comfy pair of shoes - I'm sure I covered at least a couple of kms between planes! I had organised a taxi from Hanoi airport with my guesthouse and the drive into town was a great introduction to Vietnam: beautiful scenery, a million motorbikes, and apparently no traffic laws! Hanoi old quarter is busy, noisy and quite dirty, but it has a real charm ... read more

Halong bay Well after a few miserable rainy days in Hanoi we decided we could not put the Halong Bay trip off any longer and decided to book through our hotel (Darling back packers - bad choice!). Luckily we had timed our trip perfectly and the weather was great, after waiting around for what seemed like hours in the scorching heat, watching the complete chaos of all the boats trying to push their way through to the harbour, we boarded and set off. Halong Bay is beautiful; it is a myriad of limestone cliffs protruding at random intervals from the sea. The rock formations are staggered with cracks and steps making this place a rock climber’s heaven. The scenery was reminiscent of Koh Phi Phi in Thailand, however unfortunately the water did not look quite as ... read more
