Our first post covid return to Asia and we are loving it! Stayed at our favorite hotel along the Chao Phraya river (CentrePointe Silom) with a great river view. We love watching all the river traffic - early morning barges and a few longtail boats, to evening lit dinner cruise boats and the nightly fireworks. Walking the streets, we don't see alot of changes. Unfortunately, 2 of our favorite small restaurants are closed, and appears they have been closed for awhile. Masks are worn by almost everyone, and the streets seem to be alittle quieter. We are told last month was busy, but for some reason, Dec has not been busy. Not sure how much of this is China's covid closure. Determined to take the days abit slower, we have enjoyed wandering the streets, a great ... read more

Two 6 hour flights with Emirates punctuated by a stopover of about 6 hours in Dubai which was spent in one of the many lounges 😉 Choice of entertainment on the A380 is mind blowing, the crew were lovely on both legs and the food, surprisingly good 👍 ( Not difficult to say when offered a salted caramel brownie for dessert plus a chocolate chip cookie to have with tea then a Galaxy flute chocolate bar on the second flight as a snack! ) Pre arranged pick up upon arrival was a god send as we were both wilting after 24 hours of travelling 😉 Checked in, then a walk around to suss out the local area and stretch our legs before a much needed sleep in preparation for the sightseeing 😴zzzzz... read more

Just a quick blog to say hello and welcome new blog readers 👍 A lovely golfing buddy of Steph’s dropped us at the Premier Inn yesterday as we are on a 9:40 flight this morning. In hindsight it was a good idea to book at an airport hotel the night before as it led to a less stressful sleep as there was no worry about bad traffic due to the train strike or the weather 🥶 A very early night after dinner and watching the end of the ⚽️. Slept relatively well aided by Chocolate Baileys and Rioja ( not both together I hasten to add 😂) Awoke an hour before the 6:30 alarm - excitement maybe or hunger 😉 Very smooth and speedy check in; followed by fairly swift security and then breakfast, last 🥓roll ... read more

Travelling from Phetchaburi to Bangkok isn't too difficult by bus or by minibus, but when there is something you want to see along the way, your options are limited. We came across Thailand Taxi Transfer and were quite happy with the price they quoted us to bring our plan to fruition. It was a bit of a damp and drizzly morning when we were collected from our hotel and the weather didn't really improve at all on the almost two-hour journey to Wat Sam Phran. We had seen pictures of this huge red cylindrical temple with a dragon wrapped around its outside and really wanted to visit. Despite the weather, it did not disappoint. We were dropped off in the car park and walked over a wooden bridge shaped like two enormous tree trunks. On the ... read more

Phetchaburi was always on our list for this trip, and a few days there got us back on schedule just in time to head back to the capital and get ready to leave Thailand! Thanks to the likes of bucketlistblog we had an idea what the town had to offer. Have to say though, we were very impressed and glad we decided to stay for three nights. This is the sort of place that backpackers would have been seeking out years ago but right now foreign visitors are few and far between. It's a real shame as it does dampen the atmosphere somewhat, but we still had a great time. We stayed at the Bosston Hotel which, when we first arrived, seemed to be so far out of town we were a bit disappointed. It's a ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Hua Hin September 22nd 2022

Hua Hin was a good place to stop after six hours on a bus. We've been there before and it wasn't our favourite destination, but even in this situation we try to make the best of it and find interesting things to do. We stayed at the url=https://www.booking.com/hotel/th/prinz-garden-villa.en-gb.html?group_adults=2&dest_type=city&srepoch=1664551800&group_children=0&label=prinz-garden-villa-Zg7CS24I*6pZEdmAr8pupgS442493366395%3Apl%3Ata%3Ap1%3Ap2%3Aac%3Aap%3Aneg%3Afi%3Atikwd-20363488953%3Alp1007072%3Ali%3Adec%3Adm%3Appccp%3DUmFuZG9tSVYkc2RlIyh9YUNMGHk8cZwok9XGezONs4c&hapos=1&sr_order=popularity&gclid=CjwKCAjwp9qZBhBkEiwAsYFsbwxhV53hn7Z_Y2EIbBXgc1ERMF2Tv8OxY0AkT9fyyiYgcJAIvN9pkBoCCsYQAvD_BwE&aid=311076&from_beach_sr=1&from=searchresults&auth_success=1&req_adults=2&dest_id=-3248049&hpos=1&beach_sr_walking_distance=434&sid=7fdad380568b14c5bbe1480730065477&req_children=0&ucfs=1&no_rooms=1&srpvi... read more

Koh Tao was not on our radar for this trip. From Ko Samui we had expected to return to the mainland and head south. We knew of Koh Tao because our good friends Andrea and Mark from Happy Days Travel Blog were supposed to go there to look after a hotel for a few months but Covid-19 got in the way and it never happened. We hadn't realised how close Koh Tao was to Ko Samui so we got in touch with Frank and Ai-mon at Sairee View Resort and they had a room available. That led to a quick change of plans and another booking with Lomprayah ferries. The catamaran called in at Ko Pha Ngan on the way but soon enough we were introducing ourselves to our new hosts as they collected us from ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui September 17th 2022

Ko Samui was a place we had avoided on previous trips to Thailand simply because we had this image in our heads that it would be stupidly busy. Now was the perfect time to put that right. We had a few hours on a minibus from Khlong Sok to Surat Thani and then the ferry company Lomprayah put us on another minibus to the pier. There we boarded their ferry to the island. It was all so simple and efficient, but it just took a long time! It looked like the ferry was going to be busy but once everyone was on board it wasn't more than about a quarter full, and a lot of them were going on to other islands. At Nathon Pier on the western side of the island we were hassled by ... read more

Today is it, once again. Made it through 19 sessions so far with the last to go in about an hour. Breakfast at 6:05 and I have the place to myself. I’ll be a little later to the gym because I need a few minutes to stretch. Not as sore as expected, but still feeling it a bit. Nice sunrise to greet the last trip. Forgot to mention, but yesterday I got to enjoy doing 20 kicks on each leg in one of the rounds. Woohoo!! it was a bit of a quiet morning at the gym. Today is Fahlaep’s birthday so I have him a piece of chocolate cake, and then hit the running route while he worked a couple of the other guys on the pads. I intentionally took it a bit slower, not ... read more

Packing everything up, last minute shopping, and of course double checking to make sure passport and Covid records are in the backpack takes more time then I thought. The walk back from the gym was slow and relaxed because I had already started organizing last night. This trip, not even many bruises, and no bad injuries like a broken toe on the last trip. Mostly small bruises, a few scrapes and brush burns from the pads and sparring. I took a last minute trip to Terminal 21 and found they had sort of a food festival on the main floor today. Lots of good things, but I can’t take that food on the airplane. Too bad because the ANA meals on the way over were not good. Fortunately tonight’s flight leaves at 9:30 and arrives in ... read more
