HAPPY NEW YEAR, from hat yai! welcome to my first blog of 2009, and the probably the penultimate one before Ekk and i return to the UK at the end of next month.. since i last spoke, i helped ekk celebrate his 35th birthday in hua hin, helped by some duty free famous grouse whisky, a large chocolate cake from siam paragon and 5 puppies! i then left hua hin by train to thung song junction, from where it is a short bus journey to krabi town. i could have got off at surat thani, but couldnt face the touts and hassle there. At thung song though, 2 hours further south, i was the only farang, and not a tout in sight ready to rip me off! time wise it was probably about the same, and ... read more

12/15 Railay Beach Another awesome 12 hour bus ride to the southern Thai city of Krabi...unlike Cambodia, this time there were highways and no "I'm a Barbie Girl" playing on repeat so it was a success. The tour company we booked this bus with had a promotional deal for everyone to go to the Phi Phi Islands (where the movie "The Beach" was filmed) but being the expert Thai travelers that Tara and I are we decided we could bargain a better price upon our arrival at the port of Krabi. We dashed off the bus leaving everyone else behind and a hailed a cab to the dock like we were on the Amazing Race. Got it for half the price the tour company was selling it for so we think we're doing good at this ... read more

Still disorientated from the debauchery of the full moon party on Ko Pha Ngan I went from ferry to bus to bus to minivan working my way down to Hat Yai, a city near the southern tip of Thailand. Hat Yai is essentially a bordertown, its dirty and old and everything looks a bit run down. Its as if there was a surge of money and development in the 80s but since then no one could be asked to build anything new. In my memory I also remember having the distinct impression that nobody liked to clean either. Black mold enocroaches on every 'white' wall, and lines the trim of every roof, a tribute to hat yai indifference and climate (hot, humid, and frequent rain and sunshine). Lonely planet refers to this area of Thailand as ... read more

Hey there! We arrived in Bangkok after a 10 hour bus journey, the journey was on a locals bus and pretty good, comfortable and safe. We stayed in Bangkok for a few days to chill out and decide where we wanted to go next, we found a place called Koh Lanta on the net which looked lovely and not touristy like a lot of Thailand islands are now so we booked a flight to Phuket to then take a boat. We stayed in Phuket town for 2 nights so we could check out the best way to get to Koh Lanta, the town was great and full of local Thai people and hardly any tourism, however the beach resorts were too touristy and busy, we did go to two beaches which were very pretty and good ... read more

The 270km journey from Rantau Panjang to Had Yai is stressful because we cannot stop due to the South Thailand insurgency; there is the threat of being attacked. After the claustrophobic four-hour trip, I arrive at Hat Yai - the largest city in Southern Thailand. I was here last year. Beforehand, I’d spent two weeks in a remote part of the southwest coast in a beach bungalow with a friend. A guy from New Zealand whom I’d met in Kathmandu. Back then, I’d depleted my funds after travelling in India, and Hat Yai wasn't the place to be without money. I wasn't treated that well. This time, I’m at the beginning of my trip, and I’m all cashed up. It rains everyday and I spend my time wandering around the undercover markets. I don’t want to ... read more

i am now back in Thailand having just spent the past 3 weeks in Malaysia and Singapore. after my last blog from Hat Yai, in far southern thailand, i took the direct overnight sleeper train from there to Kuala Lumpar, as my thai visa had expired. the ticket was only 518baht (about 8GBP). Although it starts in Hat Yai, it is a Malaysian train, with initially just two passenger carriages attached to the back of a very long and extremely slow goods train. the goods carriages are replaced by a lot more passenger ones at the Thailand/Malaysian border. compared with the freshly laundered sheets, that you could probably eat your dinner off, on thai sleepers, the bedding on the malaysian train left a lot to be desired. it didnt look or smell as if it had ... read more

Day 20 and 21: Songkhla to Hat Yai This morning we awoke to a breakfast of champions: sugar toast and pink Mirinda, before setting off for Hat Yai, the last Thai city we would visit. It was only a short ride, but we wanted to be in Hat Yai first thing the next morning, to depart from there for Malaysia. We wanted a full day start because we weren’t sure how long the border crossing would take. It was only a 15 mile ride to Hat Yai, and we sprint-biked it, delighted at such an easy ride. Poor J didn’t have such an easy time though; he really had to shit five minutes in to the ride, but he refused to go in the only toilet we found en-route: a squat toilet with no toilet paper. ... read more

im now in the southern Thai city of Hat Yai, having arrived here saturday afternoon with my friend ekk. we got here by boat and bus from the island of koh muk, off the coast of Trang province, in south-western thailand. soon after my last blog i left bangkok for koh samet, a tiny but very popular island off the thai eastern seaboard. the reason for that was that a friend we had met on koh samui in june, had invited us to spend some time there. we arrived on the bus from bangkok (only about 3 hours), to the port of ban phe, where we met him. we then took the boat together to the island. we ended up staying on ao phai beach, which is pretty central for most things. the second day we ... read more

Day 19: Hua Sai to Songkhla We set off biking early at 8 am, with the wind against us. But at least the day’s route was flat, and we biked along 408, the main highway, for hours. I was very, very sore and every push of the pedals made each muscle in my body hurt. We stopped to eat noodles for breakfast, then noodles for lunch, mixing it up with white noodles, then yellow. We rode by cows tied up through a ring in their nose, cute kids on bicycles, dozens of stray dogs of varying decrepitude. Huge smelly trucks piled high with unknown goods and motorbikes with side cars whizzed by us as we rode. The people down here in Southern Thailand had much darker skin than the Thais we’d seen before. Thai people generally ... read more

Day 18: Nakhon Si Thamarat to Hua Sai We slept in and took a leisurely walk over to P & P Bagery, a place we’d spotted the previous day. We were enchanted by the possibility of a real bakery and by the funny spelling mistake in the name. Unfortunately, this bagery had only store bought, pre-packaged, crust-less white bread, in terms of baked goods. (Perhaps a bagery is something altogether different than a bakery.) We were in shock, but nonetheless, stayed for some delightful coffee as well as rice and eggs with chili sauce. When the bill arrived, it was quite a bit higher than the sum of the listed prices. When we inquired, we were told the listed price was for one egg, but we had each had three eggs. We found this a bit ... read more
