Sunday May 3rd 2009 Ko Tao Taxi picked us up and brought us to Mae haad to get on our boat. Bit different from our Malaysian snorkeling, this boat was packed with about 60 people, and we weren’t the only 60person boat around. Pulled up in our first spot and there were more life vests in the ocean than fish. Stopped at 3 locations and saw bits and pieces but nothing majorly impressive. The weather was cloudy today which made it lovely and mild so didn’t have to worry so much about burning. After a quick very spicy lunch on the boat we headed to Nan Yuang island just off the coach, this is one of the most beautiful spots in Thailand, two tiny island joined together by a perfect sand bar beach, very beautiful but ... read more

Saturday May 2nd 2009 Ko Tao Those Changs like to let you know how many you had the night before so woke with a bit of a banging head. Had planned on maybe doing a dive today but don’t think my brain could have handled the water pressure on it so decided to give it a miss. Also the outside heat doesn’t seem too appealing when you are a bit worse for wear. Headed out for a late breakfast at lunch time. Had a look around the shops too and Mary bought a new dress and we decided to head for massages. Wasn’t the most relaxing experience of our lives, it sounded like Mary was getting slapped around the place while I was getting pile drived with elbows into my back. Felt kind of good afterwards ... read more

Friday May 1st Koh Tao Got up and did the daily application of sun screen and headed down to the beach. Beach here is only average, its all wet sand and the water is very shallow and the tide goes out quiet a bit but sure we shouldn’t complain. Feckin hot lying out though but you have to fight through it. Stayed there for about 2 hours and headed off for a bit of lunch and to check emails etc. turned the other way when we came out of our place and found a fabulous sandwich spot, it was delicious and had free wifi so we were happy out for a while. Not too much else to do so we grabbed our books and headed back down to the beach to see the sun set. Had ... read more

Thursday April 30th Koh Tao The taxi to the ferry was picking us up at 10.45 so we left Penzys comfortable room and took our last relief from its wonderful air conditioning since it looks like we won have an air conditioned room for another couple of weeks, ac rooms are mad expensive on Ko Tao and Phangan. It was a fast catamaran ferry that brought us to Ko Tao in about 1.5 hours so got in about 2.30 and for the fist time we hadn’t bothered booking accommodation. Jumped in a taxi from the port, well in the back of some guys pick up truck, and headed to Sairee beach. Stupidly we checked into the first room we saw, and went looking at what else was on offer, immediately found much nicer room with tiled ... read more

Wednesday April 29th Ko Samui Got up and finally made it down to the beach in Ko Samui. As resort beaches go Chaweng beach is pretty good. Exquisite turquoise blue clear water and fine blindingly white sand, broken up by jet ski stalls, ice cream vendors and the lads coming up and down selling you wristbands and henna tattoos. Paradise, package resort style! Had a lovely morning sweating buckets in the sunshine anyhow before we broke for lunch and headed off for a sandwich and a look in the shops to buy hats to keep the sun off our faces. So with our new genuine quality Abercrombie and Oakley hats we headed back to the beach to sweat away the afternoon. Dinner was another simple Thai food one, its great how the local food is so ... read more

Tuesday April 28th Ko Samui Getting up proved a little hard this morning. Not used to going out on the lock on Monday nights. Think the ·Chang and vodkas leave a bitter reminder the next day, but sure we didn’t really have too much to rush us out of bed anyhow so stayed there til about 2pm, in our air conditioned bliss, you wouldn’t last that long in a room with only a fan and 30+ degree heat. Headed out to grab something to eat for breakfast/lunch. Didn’t make it far until we had our first sales people pull up on a moped. Think in our still dazed hung-over delirious with heat state we ended up getting in a taxi with them to be sold timeshares. I knew exactly what was going on but was intrigued ... read more

Monday May 27th Ko Samui Our boat to Samui was leaving at 9am so it was another early morning to pack up the bags again. The man with the cart was around again though luckily so we were saved the labor of trekking to the pier with our heavy loads which were now 16 and 21 kgs even though we haven’t bought anything new except 1 towel. The boat to Krabi was the first leg which wasn’t too bad, but then we had to get on a bus which seemed to crawl along and did the regulatory stop for about an hour at a restaurant only 30 minutes from our destination for us to spend our money. It’s a joke and a right pain really. Finally at 4 pm we were aboard our next boat even ... read more

Cleaning up Ko Tao We caught the fast boat over to Ko Tao on the morning of April 7th. Demonstrating yet again my usual skill for picking the WORST seat available, I ended up seated next to a local woman who was violently afflicted with motion sickness on the rough crossing. Most of the people on the boat, upon realizing that they were going to be sick, elected to quietly and quickly slip to the back of the boat where they could void the contents of their stomach in the relative privacy of the bathrooms. Not this woman. She decided to brave through the pain and so sat in her seat and heaved into one plastic bag after another for the entire 2 hour trip to the Ko Tao. Once again I sent out a silent ... read more

Southern Paradise After the craziness of the past few days, we were all excited to be heading South to enjoy some of Thailand’s infamous beaches. Our overnight bus pulled into Chumphon at the sleepy hour of 5am. The hotel staff stumbled out in their robes and slippers to let us into the guesthouse. After the chaos of assigning rooms and roommates had been sorted out, we all collapsed into sleep. I woke up, hours later, to grey and steady rainfall. It was ironic that we never saw a cloudy day while in the bustling cities of Central Thailand, but as soon as we hit the beach the skies opened up and proceeded to rain on our parade. I spent the day sleeping, reading, and generally recharging my batteries. Our second day in Chumphon dawned as sunny ... read more

We have spent the last couple of weeks touring southern Thailand and its many beaches islands and party's on offer here. Among other things we have attended a full moon party on Koh Phagnan, gotten our open water PADI scuba diving certification on Koh Tao, and enjoyed lots of time on the beaches and in the water. We are now on Koh Phi Phi off the West Coast and from here head to Phuket, out final destination in Thailand. Joe and Hawley ... read more
