My eagerness for this part of my journey has most definitely been strong. So here I am, finally, on the beaches of Southern Thailand. My first stop was Ko Samui and I arrived in the open aired Gilligan's Island designed airport. I knew I wouldn't be staying too long on here, as although what may seem cheap at 25$ CAN per night, my accommodations were a bit above my price range. My bungalow on Big Buddha Beach was called Shambala. It was nice and the place was very chilled out. They had a cool bohemian vibe and would play chillout music throughout the nicely manicured beach front grounds where little chillout areas were spotted all over the place. I didn't meet many people here as it was mostly older families, but it was still cool to ... read more

After our xmas and new year on lovely Koh Tao, we said goodbye to our little bungalow and Ralph the lizard, and headed to the nextdoor island in the Samui group, most famous for its Full Moon parties; Koh Phangan. After the sea crossing from the mainland to Koh Tao, I went fully prepared and dosed up on sea sickness tablets ! It wasnt too bad though and we arrived in one piece.... Not sure on where we were headed, we found ourselves being bumped along in the back of a taxi van towards Hat Rin beach, which is where the infamous beach parties are held each full moon, and also each half moon now too ! (They dont miss a trick out here !) As it was really early in the morning, it was pretty ... read more

Since our last post only a few days ago, many things have happened, both good and bad. This past week won't be remembered as one of my (Kate's) favourites...for those readers who don't already know, my dog, Levi, had to be put down a few days ago. It was a long time coming because he had been very sick for a long time. He will be missed very much and I hope he's in a better place now. And so, the quiet days we spent on Lamai Beach on Ko Samui were much needed. Apart from another motorbike trip and the craziest night market either of us had ever seen - I bought wooden earrings and Tyler got some short-shorts - these days were mostly uneventful. I think Tyler grew weary of this town a lot ... read more

Welcome to the second installment of our world tour! After a horiffic 18 hour journey including 2 buses, a van and a boat we finally arrive in Koh Samui, the largest of the South Easten Thai Islands. The water is, as expected, crystal clear and the sand is pure white. The landscape is very beautiful- tropical but also really quite mountainous. Due to our very long journey we can only spend one night on Samui as opposed to the planned 2. We stay in a very small resort on the coast called Maenam in a very nice place called Tropical Lounge Bungalow, run by some Germans. The bungalow was 6 pounds each a night and very comfortable, there was also a pool there too- shame we could only stay a night! we went out for a ... read more

Holy Toledo, where do I even start? To sum it up, we are having fun! I know our blog posts have been few and far between, but really, can you blame us? Put yourself in our flip flops. There's no wireless on the beach! Ok Ok, so lets cut to the guts shall we, It all happens like this, starting where we left off, on Jan. 11. We were on day two of our scooter rental, and loving it, exploring the beautiful island of Koh Pha-ngan (pan-yang), we headed off down the concrete road toward Ao Thong Nai to check out the northern side of the island. We were unaware that many main roads in Thailand like to change to dirt, sand, and a mixture of the two from time to time. We found ourselves hungry ... read more

We arrived on a very wet Koh Samui around lunchtime on New Year's Eve and as we looked out the windows of the bus we could see rivers of rain pouring down the road. The prospect of spending New Years Eve on a wet beach wasn't really getting us in the spirit. Our rooms on Koh Samui where basically a terraced version of the bungalows we had in the jungle although the mosquito count was a lot higher, we had (some) hot water and the walls were paper thin (more on that in a bit). The weather managed to settle down a bit that evening and because it was New Year all the hotels force you to go to their overpriced dinner and party. The food wasn't too bad, but once we had our fill we ... read more

I’m not going to go into details about my time in Thailand over Christmas and New Year except to say where I went, and I have posted some photos which will give you an idea of what I was up to. Suffice it to say that I had such a good time that I decided to stay for longer and extend my trip in general. I was getting a bit stressed about not having enough time to visit the places I had wanted to and tired of moving from one place to another every two nights on average. So I stayed on Koh Phangan for a while with a quick visa run too Malaysia just before Christmas which I spent with friends and friends of friends back on Koh Phangan. New Years was spent on Ton ... read more

Been a while since I've had time to convert any of my scribblings into a blog entry...and it gets more difficult the longer I leave it. The sun seems to be frazzing any short term memories I have so I'm just left with my notes...here goes: Finally arrived at Koh Samui, our first taste of the Thai islands. After another 13 hour overnight train, an hour and a half bus journey (complete with some Thai gobshite trying to sell us minibus rides), an hour and a half ferry to the island and then an hour in the back of a truck to get to the resort, I was feeling a bit out of it. Bear in mind that I was still getting over my hangover and hadn't eaten in about 18 hours...it's too late for your ... read more
