Ok, so yesterday I was planning on going to Songkhla Zoo. However, I woke up at about 4am with my legs feeling incredibly itchy. I figured it was just some more mosquito bites. However, I woke up later, looked down and saw that I had some blisters developing on my legs. They were really itchy, and looked gross (as you can see). The people in the guest house had never seen anything like this, and I felt pretty rotten (not ill, just pissed off with more bug problems). Ning was going to the hospital to visit the ladyboy who broke his leg. I was advised to head over with them, and have someone look at my legs. So, off we went, taking the ferry to get there. The hospital was quite nice, with lots of trees ... read more

Well, another day another accident in Thailand. I had decided to have a peaceful one today, and not do very much. I was sitting out the front of the guest house with Alex (the Dutch owner), Christop and Alex's partner Noi. We were just about to head off to a restraunt for tea when "Crunch-BANG!!!!!!", that sound which can only mean something terrible has happed. A motorbike had ran head-on into a car, just meters from the guesthouse. My hands flew up to my ears (oddly... guess I don't like load noises?). A crowd quickly formed around the poor boy, who was lying crumpled on the road. Nobody was doing anything, just staring, there was not much anything could do until the ambulance arrived, I guess. Christoph checked his pulse, and tried to keep the boy ... read more

Today was a pretty exciting one, even if that wasn't the way I planned it at all. I'm staying at a really friendly guesthouse called the ABC (it used to be the Arbitus) in a town in the south of Thailand called Songkhla. Songkhla is a pretty interesting place for me. Because it's quite limited beachwise it's not very touristy (it hs two but they don't comprare to the big resort beaches). In addition, there has been problems with security here in the south, with seperatists waging a campaign against the government. There is occasionly bombings; teachers and monks have been killed. further south. It's all very sad and too-familiar somehow. For me however, Songkhla reminds me a lot of Aberdeen, with the choppers flying overhead taking workers to the rigs in the Gulf of Thailland. ... read more

From Phuket city we took a nice ferry boat across to the islands of Phi Phi. These islands are incredibly beautiful with huge limestone cliffs descending into the water. Once on Phi Phi Don, we went on a hunt to find a place to stay. The streets were extremely congested with people but the island has no cars to speak of anywhere. It took us a while but after splitting up, James Ryan and I booked a near 5 star room just off the beach with aircon and a TV. After dinner we went to Reggae Bar which is equipped with a Maui Thai ring in the center where people in the crowd can challenge their buddies and fight for three two minute rounds. We couldn't pass the opportunity up. It all started with the brothers ... read more

Well we ended up having to wait around in the border town of Hat Yai which was fairly uninteresting but had to be done before we could head onto Malaysia lucky for us we left though as it turns out a bomb went of the following day killing four people including a canadian who taught english to locals. After being in Bali when the bombs went of and last o/s visit there was the bird flu epidemic we certaintly like to fly close to the sun as you will find out later this trip we also had another close encounter with a landslide in the mountains of Nepal. ... read more

20 August. I arrive in Sungai Golok and check into the Thai Liang hotel. Its nice, especially for a hotel in a town that books like Lonely Planet recommend not stopping in if you can help it. But I had a reason to stay: there's a peat swamp on the outskirts, the largest left in Thailand. It is known by a number of different names, all versions of Pa Phru Toa Daeng Peat Swamp forest or Princess Sirithorn Peat Swamp forest. Nobody that I asked seemed to know where it was or even that it existed. It didn't help that unless I'm using anything but the most basic of words then most people can't understand my accent. Even a word like 'bird' gets complicated, never mind 'binoculars'. I went to the police station in the end ... read more

During our last couple days in Penang Malaysia our plans for the next leg of our journey changed considerably. We decided that we really wanted to see more of Thailand then just a boarder town. The easiest thing seemed to be to fly back to Malaysia from a more major location in Thailand in order to continue our tour of Malaysia. So, without much more consideration we booked a flight from Bangkok Thailand leaving us a week to somehow find our way up the east coast. I wasn't sure if I should tell my mother of our plans so I left everyone in suspense. So...I cut the French section out of my travel insurance booklet, sliced my bar of soap in half, dumped my shampoo into a pill bottle, forgot my favourite skirt hanging on ... read more

Hello everyone and yes this is another month special! We hope you have your thinking caps on so that you can win another prize! The question and only question is: Using basic ingredients and a kettle (if needed), what dish could we make to expand our diet? We are currently making boiled eggs, frankfurters (thanks to mum), smash and noodles. We have tried to make scarmbled eggs in our kettle but that failed miserably. Goodluck! Also take a look at the unseen pictures over the past months as well as photo requests.. After leaving Mum in Surat Thani, we got a bus to Nakon Si. We managed to see all of the sights in one hour and so we then moved on to Songkla by a 4 1/2 hour train journey (costing 45p). We headed to ... read more

If you ever want to try genuine local Thai buffets, go around and ask about “Mukata”. Mukata is apparently where people go to enjoy cheap food on a do-it-yourself hotplate and steamboat. Their steamboats are combined with the hotplate and you cook everything on this nifty device. They seem to have everything available on the buffet table, including different cuts of chicken, pork, fish, and seafood. And when I say different, I mean it comes in all variations, marinated, raw, processed, etc. The liver is particularly good. They have ice-cream, dessert, as well as different types of noodles and cooked food. The only rule is that you must finish whatever you take or they’ll charge you extra. Drinks are on the house, and each person usually pays about 80baht (S$3.60) to partake. ... read more
