correspondence 2: October 1 2009, Realization that this update is long in order I have dedicated this raining day to update the blog. In the last post we were only in Bangkok and Autyuata in the north and kata beach in the south just out of phuket, the party central zone of southern thailand it seems. We stayed in kata beach where we met a lot of people including Linus, the german psychology student, the 4 welsh boys, Rhodri, Paul, Matt and Gaz who we are now back near Surat thani with now. After Phuket we headed to the island Ko Phi Phi that was struck by the tsunami too and can the pictures, stories and horrors of the days can be seen throughout the town and the locals. Whether through reading of the stories in ... read more

Heute haben ... read more

As always, pickup from last entry, Bangkok. Following our already arranged travelplans we go picked up in Bangkok airport, driven directly to a bus and took off heading south. Time for islands and the first one was Koh Phangan. Getting to that island proved a bit different that we had though. Complicated isn't the word but nor is easy. Interesting may suit it well. Basically, what we had thought to be one bus drive and a boat resulted in the main bus dropping us off somewhere with a lot of other people and handed out some colored stickers that we were supposed to put on our shirt with no more information than that. From there we were visited by a shuttle bus once i a while asking for our destination and taking small groups of people ... read more

We got off the boat at the pier on Koh Tao to an onslaught of hawkers and diving 'touts' selling taxi-rides and diving packages. Since we'd nothing booked accomodation-wise, we decided to have a chat with one of the diving touts and for 9300 baht, Jimmy signed up for his PADI license and we got ourselves a bungalow with cable tv for 4 nights. Nice deal. We'd no lecky from 2-4pm each day which wasn't a problem, but the water was only on from 6.30am til 9am, and then not again until the evening at 5pm. Took a bit of getting used to. Koh Tao was defo the most chilled place we've been to to-date. We stayed in the Old Town for our 8 days on Koh Tao cos the rooms were way cheaper than Sairee ... read more

I wasn’t looking forward to the next part of our journey. It involved getting the 11.30am boat off Kapas, then the public but to Terangannu followed by a bus to Kota Bharu, further north, where we would stay overnight (not one of my favourite places). From there, next day, we would need to get the public bus to Rantau Panjang on the Malay/ Thai. border. Walk across the border to Songai Kolok before taking a 10 hour train journey to Surat Thani. Another overnight stop, then make our way, by a series of buses and a ferry, to Koh Phanang, an island off the East coast of Thailand renowned for it's full moon parties. Sounds daunting but not so bad if you just take it day by day. In recent years there’s been a few terrorist ... read more

We have spent almost exactly a month on some of the best beaches Jenna or I have ever seen. It has been a very relaxing slow moving month. Every island has its own personality and when you travel from one island to the next, especially in Thailand, you expect them all to be the same. All the islands that we visited were beautiful and they all had something different to offer. Our schedule for traveling from beach to beach was basically this; Wake up whenever, eat, lay on the beach and read, eat, take a nap, eat have a couple drinks and go to bed. I know I know hectic schedule right, well believe it or not after a month of this we were ready for a little city action. Ko Samui was a great place ... read more
