Today was a chilled day as we had the morning off so I woke up around 0800 and went down to eat breakfast. We had some of the delicious snowballs filled with pork and custard. J After breakfast, a few of us walked to a coffee shop near the college and I got some Thai tea. It was a beautiful coffee shop that had lots of plants. That is one big thing I am going to miss going back to the United States…all the beautiful greenery that is here. I love walking around amidst the beautiful plants and flowers. I think plants make any building or area look amazing. After we walked back from the coffee shop I spent some time reading and then we had lunch (Khao soi which is my favorite! Chicken and noodles, ... read more

Today was another pretty chill day. For breakfast we had moo ping, sticky rice, snowballs, and fruit. I love snowballs so much. I really want to eat one right now. I’m definitely going to look for them at the Asia Mall when we get back to the States. This morning after breakfast a few of us walked down the street to Maliwan cafe. I got a blueberry Italian soda, which was pretty good. It was different from my usual Iced cocoa. Everyone chilled there until like 10:30, and then we all headed back to BCNC. Since we still had some time before lunch, Brielle, Melissa and I sat outside and read our devotionals. For lunch we had Khao Soi which was kind of spicy! I wish i liked spicy food. Around 1pm everyone went to go ... read more

Woke up today feeling refreshed, positive, and ready for another day in Thailand! My “me time” last night seemed to prove successful. This morning we went to the Maliwan Coffee shop a few places down from BCNC and this was beautiful place! It was everything that my heart craved, coffee and delicious drinks and tons of hanging plants and pots everywhere on their porch. A good sized group of us ventured out together and the owner was so happy to see us and ask us questions about ourselves. I guess she doesn’t get a 8+ American young women in her shop every day! It was a little retreat for me and so much fun. I ended up going back an hour later as Mary lost a ring and went to search for it there. The shop ... read more

Today was definitely not what I had expected. We were all so excited to go to the beach, so the wake up at 530am wasn’t a big deal but…. then we found out that after our plane ride we had a bus ride. That bus ride was supposed to be “2 hours” which actually was more like 4 hours. Then we found out that we would have to take a ferry for 45 minutes which was actually a little more than an hour. Then we took a bus on the island to the hotel. It was about 12 hours of travel for our 3 day weekend. I immediately felt bummed. Dang we would only really be spending about one day at the beach. I immediately realize how selfish I was being. Here I was in one ... read more

It was awesome to enjoy a free morning back at the college and decompress from the eventful, sun-filled weekend. I woke up feeling so exhausted and still with a headache so I took some medicine and went down for breakfast. I talked to my dad a little on the phone and shared in his excitement about the Eagles going to the Superbowl!!! I wish I was there to celebrate with him, but I wouldn’t trade being here for the world. I took the morning slow and enjoyed being free and without responsibility for a while before the conference. After the morning off, we had lunch and got ready in our professional clothes for the conference. We walked down to this beautiful conference room that was covered in white and peach lace with lots of tables and ... read more

Tuesday We went out into the community again today. We made three home visits to different community members that are connected to the community hospital and get care once a week. The first visit was a 63 year-old woman who was paralyzed from the waist down from a car accident 17 years earlier. She had a caregiver for the past 17 years who cared for her 24/7. The community came up with a workout pulley for her to pull up on her legs so she could exercise by herself, which I thought was super interesting. That is one thing that I really noticed about this area—everything is extremely community oriented. She even said that her neighbors come lift her every morning and night for 10 baht. The second home we visited was a 35 year-old man ... read more

Wednesday Today we visited a nursing home that houses poorer elderly. It was very different from nursing homes back in the states. The first thing I noticed was the karaoke in the common area (which was actually outside). Some of the men and women were also dancing to the music. I don’t know if this is a regular activity for them, but it looked fun! Most of them are very active and are able to move on their own. The men and women live in separate areas so we visited each area. The men were all sitting around tables and looked stoic. The women were all sitting on the ground knitting or just sitting peacefully. They could easily get up and down from the ground (something that I struggle to do sometimes tbh). We also visited ... read more

Thursday Today, we went to a senior center for healthy elderly people. Many of the men and women are brought in from the community by bus to the facility and provided with activities like worship or exercise. The Thai people give respect to the flag every morning and night at 8am and 6pm so we participated in that (much like the pledge of allegiance, except they sing their national anthem). We all went outside and faced the flag and sang as it was being raised. They then welcomed us and shared how excited they were to have us there and took us on a short warm-up walk. After the walk, they had what I would call a worship service honoring Buddha. It was filled with songs led by one of the men who seemed to be ... read more

Todays weather was beautiful, as usual. Oh how i’ll miss the sunny 70’s once i return to the States. I’ll probably go into temperature shock from the cold! This morning I slept in until 8:15am, which was a blessing. I really needed the extra sleep. My morning consisted of “free time”, so I caught up on my weekend journals, and did my devotions. This afternoon everyone attended a nursing conference at BCNC. A few different nursing colleges from the northern region of Thailand attended. Each college completed a presentation on a non-communicable disease. It was really cool to hear about what different colleges are doing to prevent NCD’s. I appreciated everyones attempts to do their presentations in all english. They all did a greta job! I wouldn’t have been able to do a presentation in Thai, ... read more

Today was our professional presentation at the nursing conference hosted by BCNC. In morning allowed us to prepare for our presentation, look over our notes, and finalize the powerpoint. Brielle, Emily and I were the ones to present and it definitely took us awhile to complete it, as we did a lot of research and had to pare down the information quite a bit. In the morning I was feeling confident and encouraged the other two, as we had a great looking presentation and it would all go well. The morning was restful, which I felt was needed as we traveled a great deal yesterday and sleeping in the car never goes well for me. After lunch, we dressed up in professional attire and walked down to the auditorium. This is when I started to feel ... read more
