January 13 Today was a little rough in the sense that I still wasn’t feeling well and it was go go go. I was in the shower when we were leaving to go to a cooking class, so that was quite the rushed morning. We went to a popular market to pick out food to make for the Thai cooking class, then we headed to make some food. The market was hard for me—there were pig’s head and frogs and fish and I’m pretty sensitive to smells as it is. It was an experience, though. For lunch, we made green curry, papaya salad, pad Thai, and sticky rice with mango. You need a wok for basically all Thai meals so my mom already offered to buy one. It was quite a process to make (it took ... read more

Another beautiful day in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The view of the large rolling mountains gets me every time. The weather was cool, but not cold like it had been a few days ago. For breakfast I had bunny bunny (the stuff that tastes like funnel cake), a banana, some rice, and cabbage stir-fry. The first place everyone visited today was the community clinic hospital. I was expecting the hospital to be run down and look similar to Nakonping hospital, but i was so wrong. This community hospital was beautiful! The atmosphere was peaceful and the people were friendly. The layout of the hospital was open and it incorporated a lot of nature. This hospital is a primary care facility, meaning if people need to see a doctor or get a check up, they come here. People ... read more

Today was the perfect kind of day weather-wise, with a bit of a chill to the air in the morning and warmth and sun in the afternoon. I am trying my best to soak in the weather here before being through back to PA in January. I started the day off skyping my fiancé and this made me miss home much; it has been interesting experience being here while being newly engaged. I miss home and wish to be with David at Messiah, yet have been looking forward to this trip for years and can’t imagine myself anywhere else. I feel my heart is in two places and I can’t seem to be fully focused on my time in Thailand, especially today but a theme over this trip. I had phone problems in the beginning with ... read more

I no longer can complain about waking up at 9am on Saturday mornings at school anymore since I had to get up at 630am this weekend. Fortunately we do have a bit of a break this evening since we were all beginning to feel the business of the weekend as it was coming to a close. Saturday morning we went to a Thai cooking class. It was fun to learn how to cook with ingredients much different than we use in America, and it gave me a better appreciation for Thai food in general. There were so many steps, yet it seems like many of my friends here know how to prepare the meals. I definitely want to get better at blending species, and I especially appreciate their ability to not waste anything they use. I ... read more

Well, today was a day like no other. I don’t know if I can put into words the beauty of today. The morning began at 5 am. Today Linnapat (Thai) and Joshua (American) are getting married in Linnapat’s hometown of Nan. This is a northern Thai city that follows Lanna tradition. The wedding rituals was to begin at 7 am so we were told that we needed to leave our room by 6 am. The traditional Thai wedding colors are pink, blue and gold so we made sure that we were wearing those colors. Traditionally in Nan the bride asks the groom for his hand in marriage. Apparently, this is opposite of all other provinces. The wedding was held at a resort since Joshua did not have a home in Thailand. The resort had a 2 ... read more

January 12 I’m feeling a little better, probably due to the 16 hours of sleep I got last night. I decided to go to the hospital, since it was our last day and I could not miss this opportunity if it killed me. As soon as we got on the unit, a woman was arresting and we got to bag her. We also learned about what they do when someone arrests and when CPR is initiated and how that all happens. They don’t have a code blue button like we do in the states anywhere so they just have to yell “help!” and people come immediately because they are so team oriented. I also got to dress at least 5 different wounds, all pretty decent sized. Some even had a penrose drain (which I’ve had experience ... read more

Today I woke up at 0630 to have time to do devotions before leaving for the elephant camp for the day! I ran out of time for breakfast so I grabbed a banana muffin I had bought from the coffeeshop at the hospital and a banana and we headed out for the camp with our buddies. Today Jha came with me to the elephant camp since Noon came with me to the Night Safari. We got there and the first item on the agenda was to see the elephant show. Before going to the camp, I had looked up reviews on this specific camp and had noticed that a lot of people talking about the abuse of the elephants at this specific camp. I noticed similar abuse while watching the elephant show and I was overwhelmed. ... read more

Today was a day filled with adventures and new experiences. We woke up around 6:30am to get ready for the elephant camp. On the ride to the camp I had Melissa braid my hair. That was a funny experience because the roads were so bumpy and my seat was broken in the laying down position. When we arrived at the elephant camp we watched some elephants get washed in the river and then watched an elephant show. The elephants did a variety of tricks. Some painted pictures, another kicked a soccer ball, and others posed in cute positions. One trick a few elephants did really hurt my heart though. An elephant would be chained up to a wooden log and it would drag the log to a location on the ground. Then two other elephants would ... read more

January 9th Today was our first official day in the hospital. I am working on the women's surgical unit, so most of the women are post-op. Most of the cases that the ward sees are appendectomies, thoracotomies, and exploratory abdominal surgeries. I saw many differences between the unit and what we do in America. For example, to dress wounds they use forceps instead of gloves and are then able to reuse the materials. I got to dress an appendectomy wound using forceps and it was very different. I also got to see a chest tube get removed and then placed again in the same woman. This was not super fun to watch because chest tubes are painful and she did not get pain medication until they were actually cutting into her skin. Thai people are extremely ... read more

Today started off with an amazing Thai cooking class. We met a lady who took us to the local market to buy ingredients to make Pad Thai, green curry, mango sticky rice, and papaya salad. The market was very interesting as there was a lot of raw meats that looked like they had just been killed. Gross! Then we went to the woman’s house and she had a complete cooking class set up. We each had our own cutting board station where we minced garlic and chopped veggies. We each had our own electric burner with woks that we cooked most of the food on. She went through each step of the process to make the different foods and then we shared the food together! It was absolutely delicious, and it was so fun to be ... read more
