Once again this journal entry is going to be a little short. I wish that I had a tape recorder to carry around with me to capture all the things I’m processing, since I’m an external processor. I usually think I’m exhausted by the end of the day in the United States, but I haven’t felt this tired in a while. Every day we come back ready to hit the bed, so doing our work has been a bit of a challenge. My heart goes out to our Thai buddies as they usually stay up even later than us! This morning we went to the hospital, we observed in hemodialysis for a bit. Most of what they had to say was similar to the United States, but it was interesting that they needed to use peritoneal ... read more

January 10 Hump day! I’ve been here for almost a week and it actually feels like a month. I am absolutely loving it. The hospital staff is so welcoming and the doctors are willing to ask and answer questions (super different from USA). I observed a spinal surgery in the OR today. The surgery is called a laminectomy, and it’s where the doctor removes the herniated disc. In this case, it was in the man’s lumbar spine. He was sedated, but I found out later that most people do not get put under, only for spinal surgeries. This is super different from America, where you get put under for everything. The surgery took about 3 hours. 10 screws were placed in his back and the nurse cut up parts of his spine for a bone graft ... read more

Although it’s the weekend, there’s no time to rest! Our day was yet again jammed packed with things to do. The weather was cool and in the low 60’s like yesterday. Thank goodness i brought my jacket along! For breakfast I tried fried frog leg! That was a first for me… It kind of tasted like chicken. The first thing we did today was go to a food market and buy fresh ingredients for our Thai cooking class. We then traveled to a Thai cooking establishment and were instructed on how to make some traditional Thai dishes. We made Pad Thai, green chicken curry, papaya salad, and sticky rice with coconut sauce and mango. The green curry and papaya salad were both spicy so i couldn’t eat them. I did however enjoy the Pad Thai and ... read more

A day to sleep in a little, which prepared for a marathon of a day! We started the day with a delicious breakfast and were off to a Thai cooking class with an older woman. What I thought was a casual time with a great Thai cook turned into a legit thing! We went with her to the market and this was nothing like the food sellers we had seen in the Walking Street or like area. Dozens upon dozens of vendors were set up with delicious, vibrant, fresh ingredients in all varieties. She took us to her favorites and showed us what to pick out for the dishes we were to prepare. This experience reminded me of a farmers market, yet tenfold in size. We were whisked back to her house where we were surprised ... read more

Today I got to spend the morning on my unit with Carrie. We were both excited to be on our unit for the morning because we had only been there for an hour for the past two days with going to the OR and being at alternative medicine and going to the labor room. We got on the floor and all the nurses were excited to see us and our preceptor Jinda was too! We felt very welcomed on our floor from the beginning and even though a lot of the nurses didn’t speak a lot of English, they spoke enough that we could learn from them and talk to them a little bit. Today we were with the same nurse we were with on Tuesday and we followed her as she prepared injections. We were ... read more

Today we had Koew Min Gai for breakfast. I skyped the granddaughters this morning and showed them my breakfast. Angel wanted to know why I was eating that food for breakfast. I explained that in Thailand they do not have pancakes, waffles, cereal and toast for breakfast. She said she likes England better but what is funny is she was too little to even remember England. I guess she just likes her American breakfast food. The girls also had difficulty understanding how it was morning for me when they were getting ready to eat dinner. Oh, how I miss them. This morning was cold. It was drizzling and slightly windy. The hospital is open space and there is no heat. I had wished that I had brought a sweater or something because it was chilly. As ... read more

I can’t believe a week ago I was landing in Thailand and meeting my buddies for the first time. So much has happened since then! I feel like I’ve already grown a lot and have made so many memories. I’ve been slowly adapting to the Thai culture. I’m going to miss all of the hospitality, service, and love once I go back to the States. Today’s weather was chilly and overcast. This is the first time i’ve been cold in Thailand! It was probably in the high 60’s all day. It’s funny to think that in America if it was this temperature everyone would be out in tank tops and shorts, but since we’re used to heat in Thailand everyone was bundled up. Today was my last day at the hospital. I had the opportunity to ... read more

Today was our last day of clinical at Nakornping Hospital in Chiang Mai on our respective units. Melissa and I spent the morning on our female medical unit and we got to do and observe more than I expected! We observed a thoracentesis which was done at bedside with lidocaine by the first year doctor, which went well. This was interesting to observe the dynamics of the doctor, the resident, and this intern and how they worked together but didn’t really help the intern out much. The teaching style is not through explanations but through forcing ones hands and showing after. We saw this teaching style in the labor ward as well; the nursing students are basically delivering the baby yet the instructors are forcing the student’s hands around and yelling at them. The one student ... read more

Today my alarm went off at 6 am. I am planning on going to clinical with the students. For this morning’s breakfast we had sticky rice with coconut custard, little chicken & pork balls, fruit, salad, moo ping and eggs. We attended morning ceremony and headed to the hospital by 8:30 am. When we arrived at the hospital we were informed that 7 students were going to go to the operating room. The students are scheduled to see a laminectomy and a total hip replacement. I decided to observe the labor & delivery room for the morning. This is the first year that we have students in the labor and delivery room for the whole week. Usually, students just drop in for a delivery and then leave. The staff and college faculty were very warm and ... read more

Today started off with morning ceremony again and my buddies picked me up and again told me they were up until 4am the night before setting up for the New Years Party. I felt so bad because they both looked very tired, but they were still very sweet to me and asked me about my experience at the hospital the day before. I have heard similar things from other students that their buddies tell them they were up very late the night before and we all feel so bad. I can definitely tell that the Thai people are hard workers and that they do not get much rest or time off. After morning ceremony we went to the hospital and I was in the female medical ward for about an hour before going down to visit ... read more
