Chiang Mai was our first stop in Thailand, but first there was the small matter of negotiating Bangkok Airport security. We think we have pretty much got the process well rehearsed by now, but Pip got stopped and her bag opened. The target was her fold away travel scissors, about an inch long. She told the guy that she had done 20 to 30 flights with them but the guy's response was "this is Bangkok" and away they were taken. Chiang Mai, in the North of Thailand, is an old city surrounded by a moat with a large expanse of urban sprawl around it. It is famed for its wats (Buddhist temples) and street food, and outside the city for its elephant experiences - which get a very bad rap for their treatment of the beasts ... read more

Well, it has been a crazy return since last Friday. I definitely need a few days to relax, but I haven’t really given myself that opportunity. Maybe, I am crazy! Friday night, I had family over for food, gifts, and pictures. I had to complete about four hours of homework for my Saturday clinical and was unable to go to bed until 1am. I had to wake up at 5 in order to leave in time for my clinical session in Gettysburg which was from 9-4:30. I quick ran some errands afterward, and soon after met up with my boyfriend for dinner. Fortunately, I have had a little bit of time to reflect on my two objectives I created before this course began. I had two objectives coming into this trip that I want to quickly ... read more

Well, I don’t think I have too much to say about today. It was extremely chill. We started off the morning going to breakfast at BCNC and then headed over to the coffee shop nearby the school called Maliwan. We had past it many days and always got back to the school after its open hours. It was everything I loved: Ferns. Thai tea. Good conversations. Calm early mornings. Friendly greetings. Strawberry shirts. Sunshine. Cat figurines. Wooden tables with fine, clean lines. I could go on and on about how happy I was at this coffee shop. It seems so simple, but sometimes the smallest and simplest things bring us the most joy. After this I was able to go back to BCNC and have independent devotional time, which was most needed. During my devotional time ... read more

Today is our last full day in Chiang Mai. I’m feeling very nostalgic. This morning as I was doing devotionals on the third story porch, I watch Melissa and Jha spend some time chatting and sharing gifts. This is the first time it really hit me that we were soon leaving our beloved friends. I’m not sure why I feel so sad other than that I will really miss them and that I really love our Thai friends. Love is such a weird thing because we cannot really pinpoint it, something I love to do when self-reflecting. It’s extra tough because I feel split between here and home. There are people at home that I miss dearly and cannot wait to see, but there are also people here I do not want to say goodbye to. ... read more

Yes, I’m a little delayed in my journal writing. Yesterday, was the 25th and our last day in Thailand. We spent the morning doing evaluations and talking with the staff about our time in Thailand. I thought that things came off harsher than I would have liked them to sound, and I felt slightly annoyed by the complaints that were being made, given that we had already talked to Debbie about most of them. I recognize that I make cultural mistakes all the time, but it is frustrating to me that people continue to push American ideas and reactions onto situations even after already talking about how to do things better and more respectfully. At least evaluations are over. I am hoping that next year goes just as smoothly as our year. I was extremely bummed ... read more

This journal entry is in response to my ELI objectives. Below are the two objectives I created before leaving for Thailand. The community objective was altered after receiving feedback from Debbie, therefore it is different than the one i originally submitted on canvas. I hope to address both objectives in the following sentences. Professional: After completing my clinical experience in Thailand I will demonstrate an increased understanding of cultural humility by describing in my ELI journal how I adopted my care to meet the specific needs of the population. To be completely honest I was anticipating that i’d have to make some big changes in order to meet the cultural needs of my patients, but i didn’t. I had read before coming to Thailand that there is a huge emphasis on hot and cold in pregnancy. ... read more

Thursday-Friday Today was really hard, seeing as we all knew it was the last day to do anything and everything. I savored every moment, saying "guys! this is the last time we'll be able to do this!" I'm pretty sure everyone hated me. Oh well, can't win them all. This morning, we headed over to the market at Nakornping Hospital. We all walked over and had to cross a pretty intimidating street. No one got hurt so all is well. The market is very similar to all of the other markets that we've been to. There were tons of tents and tables set up with different products that you could browse (I don't' know why I'm explaining what a 'market' is on the last day). I got the famous iced cocoa at my favorite coffee shop ... read more

Although I do not like flying, it was nice to have a solid 21 hours to think and process all that has happened on this trip to Thailand. It was such an amazing trip filled with so many great memories and so many great relationships formed. It definitely exceeded my expectations. After reflecting back on the trip, I can see how much I have learned including things that fulfilled the objectives I set up for myself. I experienced the many differences between American and Thai health care and health practices including the community oriented nature of health care, the multifaceted and more involved role of the nurse, and the teamwork focus of the nursing care. I also noticed a lot of religious differences which I have discussed in earlier blogs. I was so exhausted physically and ... read more

Monday After a nice relaxing weekend and a day of travel yesterday, we had the morning to chill. I slept in until 8, which was amazing. And then I caught up on some blogging (I’m behind again). We ate lunch and then attended a nursing conference. BCNC hosted several different schools including Payap (a small Christian school located in Chiang Mai), Chiang Mai University, and about 5 different branches of Boromarajonani (I’m getting the sense it’s like Penn state). The different students presented on non-communicable diseases in Thailand, many of them being stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The students from Messiah talked about obesity in the U.S. After the conference was over, we took about 94 pictures with the different groups of students. We had dinner and then decided to go shopping at a market ... read more

Tuesday This morning, we decided to take a walk to a little coffee shop that we noticed a little ways away from the campus. Everyone ended up going in waves and there were no regrets. The drinks were delicious and there were cat statues and succulents and plants everywhere (Libby and Hope’s dream!). After the café, we sat outside in the sun for a bit more and roasted. Around 1pm, we went to get a Thai massage. I was too burnt so I had to request a foot and leg massage instead. (Update: I now have sun poisoning so there’s that.) Man, this one hurt. I have a bruise on my leg because it honestly felt like she was trying to hurt me. I was a piece of meat that she needed to tenderize. At one ... read more
