Chang Mai is a small city full of temples, street stalls, markets, tourists and a thriving night life. Chang Mai and the surrounding area is home to some 300 beautiful golden buddhist temples and not far from the great outdoors! The old city vicinity where I am staying is only about 2km long and is surrounded by a moat. I easily found a lovely cheap guest house located on a street full of other guesthouses and tourist information shops, offering anything from Thai cooking classes, Hill tribe treks, Meditation classes, bike riding on jungle paths, elephant rides, rock climbing, white water rafting and soo soo much more. I have seen many temples including the Wat Suthep temple (one of Thailand's most famous temples) which overlooks the whole city, the Chang Mai university, and the day, night ... read more

Greetings from Chiang Mai! After thinking we had a couple more days left on Koh Phangan, Joanne realised that we in fact only had one more day left... so we said our goodbyes to our lovely lovely neighbours Ali and Si :( The next morning we packed up our things, and waved goodbye to Laem Son 1, and off we trotted to the port, to start our long journey to Chiang Mai. The whole journey was so easy, thanks to them sticking florescent stickers on us (which made us feel like we were on a special school trip or something) - we had to get the boat, then a bus, then a 12 hour train to Bangkok, then a 12 hour train to Chiang Mai. The stickers were there to show the transport staff which bus/train ... read more

.... Because we have! Just to let everyone know we arrived up north and we are well and safe etc ... only instead of being an overnight express it took us until 7 in the evening the next day .. 24 hours after we got on it!!!! Apparently that is normal for his country and it was certainly an experience. The train was air conditioned and lovely and clean with a buffet cart that was like a bad 90s disco blasting shania twain and the corrs all night. Luckily for us (as we might have ended up killing each other!!) .. we met some other brits on the train and a lovely german couple and had a good laugh about it. Andy was completely charmed by the fella who turned out to be a football press ... read more

Robbo's adventure into raw food cooking I had the opportunity to learn some techniques to ‘cook’ raw vegan food with the wonderful chef, Loyenda. I joined two other students, Joseph Lee (Yoga teaching star) and Nic from Belgium (Massage therapist / Physiotherapist) for some cooking adventures . Loyenda is a based in Chiang Mai & also Amsterdam where he holds raw food workshops. His website: http://yendakreatives.wordpress.com/about/ ‘I love the flavours you get from going in the ‘raw’ and surprising there is very little effort compared to regular cooking to create some wonderful soups, salads, pies, crackers, smoothies, dressings and sauces’. Key tools are: a blender, a food processor, spiral vegetable slicer, mortal and pestle and if getting serious then invest in a dehydrator machine. We learnt how to use the dehydrator to make d... read more

Anyone who's ever been to Thailand will be familiar with this saying; "Same same...but different" - everyone from my host family, to the guys selling ping pong shows on the street; "Same same but different" can mean anything from "So similar it's almost the same" to "You couldn't get more different if you tried." So I've boarded the train up to Chiang Mai (had to get a day train as the night sleeper train was full) and after a 13 hour journey I arrive around 10pm. I grab a sangtheaw (a kind of share taxi thing, an open truck with a bench down either side. You ask the driver if he's going in your direction, and if so hop in... If not you wait for another) and a few of us jump in and head for ... read more

The travelling has definitely begun! I moved out of my apartment on Tuesday, got the overnight train to Chiang Mai on Wednesday and have had the most amazing few days since then... The overnight train was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be; the seats that we started our journey sitting in folded down into a lower bunk bed and the upper bunk bed was released from the ceiling by the train attendant when it was time for us to go to sleep. Holly and I watched a film to pass some of the time but it was soon time to get some sleep and, whilst it wasn't exactly the best night's sleep of my life, it certainly wasn't the worst either! We got to Chiang Mai on Thursday morning and were taken ... read more

After a freezing 16 hour train journey we arrived in Chiang Mai, (freezing due to the air con). Luckily we arrived on a Sunday so it was the walking street market which was a huge market the length of the main/longest street in Chiang Mai (Paul felt it was a very very long street as well). The market was ace and consisted of shops, food stalls and people busking in the middle which was cool. It was especially interesting at 6pm when the national anthem came on loud speaker and everyone stopped what they were doing to show respect! Chiang Mai was action packed for us..... First we did white water rafting, so much fun, it was a 10km raft down the Maetang River. Even the journey up to the start point was interesting over all ... read more

From the hectic pace of Bangkok, Aoife and I headed for the more laid back city of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. The main reason for going to Chiang Mai was to go trekking in the jungle. We booked a 3 day 2 night trek with a travel agent that included the bus and our first nights accommodation in Chiang Mai. The trip didn't start well. Someone with the bus company stole a few things from my rucksack including a watch, sunglasses, earphones and my new Robbie Fowler t-shirt. Thankfully I had mailed home to Ireland the Muangthong United jersey that Fowler had signed for me! We arrived in Chiang Mai around 6am on December 17th. After we checked into our hotel and had some breakfast we tried to get some sleep. Not as easy as ... read more

Today we started the day with bagels for breakie again from our fav breakfast stop at the end of our road. We had a busy day today. Starting off by finding a way to get up Doi Suthep mountain to visit the temple at the top. We had been told many prices but didn’t know the best way. In the end we ended up waiting almost an hour for our fav tuk tuk driver to organise a van for us. Complete luxury with air con and drink holders etc! J It took maybe 30mins to get to the top at the base of the stairs and we climbed the rest of the way. It was unlike either of us had expected but it was pretty cool. And a beautiful view of chiang mai at the top ... read more

The train to chiang mai was a few hours late and got in at 7.10 am, we walked to goodwill guest house (that is where i stayed last year) from the train station it was about 15 minutes. They were full until 11.00 when people would start checking out. We left our packs there and walk to the nearest coffee shop. After our 15 hour train ride, the coffe tasted good. We walked around a bit to kill time, we could have gone to another guest house , but i really liked the goodwilll. for 250 bht a night its a gem. After settling in after check in we were motivated for a walk beyond the wall in to chiang mai city for lunch. By the way cost for our lunch is usually about 2 to ... read more
