So, for the very last time, hello from Thailand! I can't believe that in a few short hours I will be boarding a plane and flying home after what seems like a lifetime away. Maybe not in terms of time - six months is a long and short time all in one - but in terms of how much I've achieved and how much I've changed. I feel like the person I left behind in England is a very different person to the one that's coming home tomorrow! The last few days have flown by, we said goodbye to Bully on Monday, spent Tuesday by the pool and then getting some last minute souvenirs. Yesterday, Holly took me took Terminal 21, another shopping centre here in Bangkok that I hadn't visited, then we spent the rest ... read more

It has clearly been far too long since I last wrote a blog entry: I must have been having too much fun! We spent a very relaxing first few days of our beach holiday in Railay – a very expensive and quiet resort that is still on the mainland but only accessible by boat from Krabi. There wasn’t much to do except rock climb or sunbathe, so we chose to sunbathe! Our next stop was Ko Phi Phi, the first of our islands! This is where the backpacker scene really kicked off with people really only there to party. Amazingly, I managed to meet up withHoover, my tour guide from Contiki NZ who now lives on Phi Phi. It was awesome to see her and we spent two nights having a few drinks and catching up ... read more

Decided to sit down and write this entry as we are currently in the middle of a thunderstorm so there isn’t much else to do! After getting Holly back fromLaos, we spent one night in Ayuthaya, visiting all the temples that the old capital ofThailandhas to offer its tourists. There were some very spectacular sights, particularly the first temple that we saw at sunset on our first day there. Unfortunately, Ayuthaya is one of the places that was worst affected by the flooding back when I first arrived in Thailand and much of the area of the temple was sectioned off as the authorities are still not sure quite how much damage has been caused. All the water has obviously gone now, but there may be unknown structural damage. It was a bit of a disappointment ... read more

The travelling has definitely begun! I moved out of my apartment on Tuesday, got the overnight train to Chiang Mai on Wednesday and have had the most amazing few days since then... The overnight train was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be; the seats that we started our journey sitting in folded down into a lower bunk bed and the upper bunk bed was released from the ceiling by the train attendant when it was time for us to go to sleep. Holly and I watched a film to pass some of the time but it was soon time to get some sleep and, whilst it wasn't exactly the best night's sleep of my life, it certainly wasn't the worst either! We got to Chiang Mai on Thursday morning and were taken ... read more

Well, isn't this a turn out for the books...I am no longer a teacher in Thailand! I quit my job on Wednesday after having a horrible time of it with my head of department - being blamed for things I hadn't done, getting yelled at for not doing things that I hadn't been told to do etc. I just, quite simply, had enough of it. I'm supposed to be here to enjoy myself as much as I was supposed to be here to teach, so I left and have planned a lovely six weeks of doing just that - enjoying myself! I have a friend, Holly, who also gave up her teaching job a while ago, so we are going to go off travelling before coming home. It's worked out pretty nicely to be honest. I'm ... read more

The last few weeks at work have been relatively normal...we had midterms which meant that there were no lessons for three days and nothing for me to do either, so I spent those three days sitting on Facebook and reading my book (and still getting paid for it...tough life!). Apart from that, lessons have been normal and the students have been as adorable as ever. There was one incident when one of my favourite boys (Nemo, he's 8), showed me the tooth that had just fallen out of his mouth and the blood that was gushing from his gums! I have been hugged lots and called Mummy a few times, which I don't mind when it's by the six year olds but I was bit freaked out when a 14 year old said it to me!! ... read more

School has been plodding along quite normally since New Year (as you can tell by the fact that I have time to write an entry during school hours - I have just marked 36 workbooks, honest!). But, the last few days were supposed to be special occasions here in Thailand. I say 'supposed to be' because the one I was most looking forward to got cancelled at my school! First, we celebrated Children's Day last Friday (13th - not unlucky for children, apparently!). It meant that there were no lessons for the day and the students were free to do whatever they wanted. This mostly involved them running around like crazy people and making a nuisance of themselves. As far as I could see there weren't any special activities, just music blaring out loudly and a ... read more

Well, happy 2012!! I can't really believe where the last year has gone, but it's safe to say I've had a pretty amazing one! I think, by the end of reading this blog entry, you'll agree I rounded the year off with a party to rival all parties... The week at work flew by, as they seem to do out here, and, no sooner than we had said goodbye to everyone on Ko Sichang, they were back in Bangkok for the weekend. Thanks to the super organisational skills of one of our group, we had managed to secure a pretty decent discount on a fancy meal and rooftop party in a local hotel - The Queen's Park Imperial. The meal was a buffet and the party had several floors of music to keep us dancing until ... read more

Well, it’s Monday, I’ve been teaching all day yet still something seems to be not quite right with that. Oh yes, it’s Boxing Day and I’ve been at work for the first time in my life! My Christmas started at school last Thursday afternoon, with what was supposed to be a Christmas concert but held no resemblance to the festive season at all. Plus, virtually all the music was Thai, which is not only impossible to understand but isn’t really very musical either! Our school band was quite impressive considering they are all teenagers but there were two supposedly well-known bands who came to ‘entertain’ us and I was certainly anything but entertained. Friday was better, all lessons were cancelled and we spent the first two hours having our Christmas show. The school priest came and ... read more

I can't believe I am sitting here writing an entry having been at work for two weeks already! In some ways it seems to have gone very quickly but in others it still feels like I'm only on my first day. I thought Thailand in general was laid back, Thai schools take the definition to a whole new level! Classes get cancelled or changed with little or no notice. On one occasion last week, the class I was supposed to have had disappeared and, in the process of trying to find them, I got cornered by the director asking me to listen to some other students read and grade them on it. I still have no idea what happened to my original class but no one seems to mind! The Thai teachers are very friendly and ... read more
