A few years ago, I learned about a field in the eastern side of Bangkok where several aircraft had been abandoned. I immediately knew I had to experience this myself. When planning this flashpacking trip, I blinked in disbelief when I saw on united.com that I could fly Singapore-Bangkok-Sydney and return on Thai Airways for a paltry 70,000 miles, with BKK-SYD in First Class and the rest of the sectors in Business Class. I booked this award ticket without hesitation and scheduled a ten hour layover so that I could seek out this aircraft graveyard. The Journey to the Aircraft Graveyard I arrived at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport at 9am. Since I was flying First Class on my next segment, I suspected there would be someone to meet me at arrival. Sure thing, there was an earnest ... read more

Our last day... Today we are travelling back in time and losing some hours. We had a final breakfast before negotiating the metro straight to the airport, which was really easy. I'm looking forward to coming back to Bangkok one day soon, I really want to explore it properly! At the moment we are flying over the Caspian Sea, it is 7:45pm in Bangkok, but I'm already trying to convince my body that it's only lunch time (1:45pm). I have watched 3 films so far.... Beauty and the Beast, Darjeeling Limited (don't bother) and Burnt. I might watch Unforgettable next. I am looking forward to seeing everyone, a hot bath and my own bed, but also looking forward to finally buying the pin map of the world and planning a new adventure! ... read more

It's still raining! Not that we minded too much as we were mainly travelling all day. We have now left Cambodia and are back in Bangkok. It was a pretty uneventful day, filled with buses, planes and more buses to start our journey home. I finally posted the postcards I have been carrying around with me for a week, I'm pretty certain I will get home quicker now! We did also stop at a pretty amazing place for a snack/lunch... It was called 'the stop' and it was really funky! They had used lots of recycled goods, including parts of cars, to use as decor in the restaurant and the toilets. Even better than the decor was the coffee and croissants! Once we got to Bangkok we checked back into the hotel where we stayed 2 ... read more

Georgie booked us a car to take us to the floating market in Damnoen Saduak. We drove out of the city for about an hour passing salt farms with bags of salt piled by their gates. As we drove further from Bangkok the vegetation was more jungle like. This was to be a totally different experience from when I was here with Chrissie. We opted for the two hour long tail boat ride and sped through green vegetation of the klongs until we came to the market. It was total grid lock with tourist boats and market boats, some piled high with fruit, some with cooking pots steaming away with, no doubt, tasty food. We "conveniently" got stuck, several times, next to boats selling souvenirs and the children bought some odds and bobs. I’m pleased to ... read more

Tuesday I woke up not knowing what day of the week it was. When George woke the kids and told Sam it was twelve o’clock mid day Sam wouldn't believe it. Apparently, when we all went to bed last night, Sam decided that, as the bathroom was rather swish, he would have a soak in the bath. I thought that was histerical as we were all so tired from our journey I thought that both the kids would crash out immediately. We all put on our bath robes and went up to the roof hoping a swim would wake us up. I have never swam in an infinity pool twenty five floors high before and I thought it was quite magical. Later a pink taxi cab took us to The River Restaurant beside the Chao Phraya ... read more

We are here, in Barmy Bangkok! The flight was long, but quite uneventful, other than we were trapped by a Thai teenager who seemed to think that not getting up to let us get out would be easier. So it meant that we had to clamber over him (quite literally at one point) to escape periodically to the loo... maybe he just wanted middle aged women's bottoms in his face! We eventually found our hotel transfer, although I am now know on as 'Rawn', we arrived at our hotel at 6:30 this morning. Gill's face was a picture when we turned off the Main Street onto a tiny backroad that looked like a shanty town with corrugated iron leaning everywhere. thankfully I had googled ahead and knew it was ok, we drove a bit further and ... read more

Our wedding anniversary started fairly averagely - we opened our cards, ate breakfast together and them, oh yeah, packed our MASSIVE backpacks ready to leave for our epic adventure to Indonesia - 25 days door to door travelling through Java and Bali. We were very excited as we boarded the train to Heathrow. The night before, I had jokingly suggested that we should take a bottle of champagne on the train to celebrate our anniversary in style. We needn't have worried. 2 men sitting opposite us had bought 2 bottles to drink on their way to a booze "business" meeting. On chatting to us and sharing their first bottle, they discovered it was our anniversary. Congratulations ensued before the second bottle was passed our way with their best wishes. The kindness of strangers never fails to ... read more

Wir konnten also zwei Runden drehen… Yeah!!!

Davor hatten wir immer angenehme 30° in u... read more
