Morning in Bangkok at the breakfast buffet. A popular place especially at 7:30 in the morning. Sleeping is way out of whack and no doubt will be looking for some serious afternoon nap today. Not much luck sleeping on the long flight to Seoul, but couldn't keep awake on the short flight (4 hours) to Bangkok. Korean air has probably the worst airline food and TV/movie selection I've experienced yet. But for the price of the ticket, I couldn't beat it. I paid $200 more for the trip here than I did recently for a round trip to Atlanta. How does that make any sense at all? Seems the rains have been heavy in the north, and there is talk of flooding, but not in Bangkok. I did see shops have stacks of sandbags outside their ... read more

This is gonna hurt..... I'm already tired. Woke up at 1 last night, but did get back to sleep at 3. The Fitbit says I logged 12.5 miles yesterday. Wonder how much that goes up today. Weather looks good so far, I just don't want to jump rope forever..I'm sure there will be 15 minutes of it after running this morning though. breakfast is crazy packed, looks like tour groups today from the number of busses in the lot. Time to head for the skytrain, just me and my butterflies.... Well, I was right. It hurts. I couldn't even write and update at lunch, and wish I did because all I want to do right now is sleep. The morning session was 9 laps and 10 minutes jump rope. That really wasnt so bad, and the ... read more

Day one is a real bitch. Whatever I got, the accompanying deep-down, throbbing, full-body ache is a new take on the overseas-disease-trying-to-kill-me experience. I also have a 103-degree hallucinatory temperature and a totally debilitating crown-of-thorns headache. But what’s really problematic is I’m supposed to be watching the 2-year old while mama is in Rome. I probably have dengue fever, so I need to not die before the nanny arrives. Day two dawns with vomiting– the kind where you don’t make it and end up dry heaving bile on the bathroom floor before crawling into the shower half-clothed to sleep because the tiles are cool against you face and the bed is a million miles away. The baby finds this behavior alarming, but this is tropical disease suffering luxury: there’s running water, electricity, air conditioning, and child ... read more

'Sawadeekha, Chern kha', means 'Hello, welcome'. It is the phrase 7-11 cashiers use to greet their customers in Thailand. In this blog, I am going to write about my growing fondness towards the 24/7 convenience store in Bangkok, particularly the 7-Eleven opposite of my apartment. To begin, I would like talk about my encounters with 7-11 in Malaysia because this is the place where I grew up. 7-11 was never stranger to me back in Malaysia. However its presence are mainly concentrated in the cities or bigger towns. So when the first 7-11 was opened in my hometown, it sort of implied that my town population had grown and I knew that I could call it a big town since then. But, I never like the 7-11 in Malaysia because of the overpriced items in their ... read more

Thailand is a world of natural and cultural wonders. Exotic, colorful, historic, Thailand offers a plethora of ancient ruins, rich culture, unusual foods, a rich colorful environment and an amazing opportunity to visit a location very different from home. Preparation is critical. Thailand is HOT and HUMID. It can also be very wet if you go in the wrong season. We chose to go in November, the beginning of the dry season. Stay away from July to October as that is the rainy season. March through June are the HOT, and I do mean HOT season. July through October is the monsoon season where it will rain heavily every day. So the best times are November through February. So choose wisely. Secondly Thailand can be dangerous. The country just lost their King and the government is ... read more

I will start writing about my life here in Bangkok about mostly mundane and boring aspects of life in general. I feel that Travelblog is still safe to write and blog as if it was in 2005 (btw I only started to use Internet from 2009 haha). I am reluctant to write about what I feel, think, experience in the major social media mostly because it has become so prevalent, that I don't wanna write something and let it shown to people who are not interested. If you stumble upon this by accident, you're welcome to read because that's one of the reason I write here. #1 Moving out It is difficult to find a reasonably priced room in Bangkok via the internet. There are some properties listed on some websites, but when you inquire its ... read more

‘Did you see the girl who just walked past us?’ Me: ‘Yea, why?’ ‘I saw her glance at your belt buckle for a second’ Me: ‘Oh’ ‘That’s how people know you are from Chula’ Me: ‘So.. does it mean anything?’ ‘Well, people will look at you, admire your accomplishments. But if you do anything inappropriate while wearing this uniform, you will be judged and criticised for embarrassing the most prestigious university in this Kingdom.’ This is the conversation I had with the Thai friend who is now studying in SG, while we were hanging out in one of the shopping malls near Chulalongkorn University. It never occurred to me that I was being regarded as the elite of any country, at least not how I felt. In here, I am showered with the attention and admiration ... read more

Last day in Bangkok We took it easy in the morning, had a great breakfast then took a taxi to Wat Po. The kids weren't that interested probably because they are tired. Then we shopped for bags for Mollie to give her friends and they also bought t shirts. We took a tuk tuk back to the hotel and had a late lunch across the road which was so good, then went back to pack and have a last swim on the roof. Tomorrow we are up at 5.0 to make the long journey home to Spain via Dubai. It has been such an amazing holiday. We have done so much and seen such wonderful things. I feel so fortunate and grateful that Georgie and the kids invited me, it's been so good spending so much ... read more
