Ok, so yesterday was full and intense. And we have had a lot of days in a row that have been full on, so today we decided to just chill out. We woke early, were still tired and decided to go back to bloody bed. Soooo worth it. Got back up at 9:30 and threw clothes on to get down to breakfast before it finished. We are all loving the breakky buffet, a huge selection and great mix of Asian and Western foods. After breakky I decided I wanted to get onto the blog writing for the temple day, and Todd wanted to try out the gym, plus we had some laundry to get done, so we got all agreed we were not in a hurry to go anywhere. I stayed in the room and got ... read more

Happy Birthday to me.......to be honest after the hectic day we had yesterday I had given zero thought to the fact that it is my birthday today and had Todd not reminded me first thing this morning I would have forgotten completely! But here it is, another year older, but we had such a cool time I managed not to dwell on my decrepit aged state one bit the whole day :) Ok, so continuing on from where I left off this morning......we managed to get Kalyb out of the bathroom and then also discovered that the reason we couldn't get hot water in the second bathroom's shower was because the cold tap is the hot tap and vice versa......go figure because in the ensuite the hot is hot and the cold is cold, so the ... read more

Well, it was a loooonng Day 2, but holy shitballs Batman, we made it! Was too exhausted last night to get the blog up so I'll recount as best I can now, being in Adelaide yesterday morning feels like a week ago!! We woke early at the dodge-motel and got our shit together, ate our classy box of breakfast (which was actually pretty good for an included breakky at a dodge-motel, a mini box of Nutri-Grain with milk, an Up n Go milkshake thing and a muffin, not bad right?), and headed out to the street to get our taxi. It was peak hour traffic and the taxi was going to be a bit of a wait and whilst waiting we noticed, like a sign from the gods, that the bar was open! So Todd and ... read more

Ah Bangkok. Despite the seedy reputation, it’s still one of my favorite cities! To be honest, we pretty much stay in the one square mile around the infamous Khao San Rd, legendary in the backpacker circuit and made famous in the movie The Beach. Within a few hours of arriving, we’d visited our dentist of ten years and done a bit of necessary shopping. We also got haircuts the next day at a fraction of the cost back home, and it even included a head and neck massage - bonus! The only time we actually leave the Khao San Road area is to visit Mission Hospital, the height of efficiency. We ended up getting a slew of routine check-ups done in five hours at the hospital, something that would have taken about five months in the ... read more

Sometimes I forget that I am in a land that was once foreign to me. As my life here getting more routinized, the strangeness disappeared. I have accepted who I am to this place. To general people I am the foreigner whose Thai language skill comparable to a 3 year old kid. To the street food vendors I am the guy who eats soup noodles with no pig organs. To the security guard at my apartment, I am the guy who stay awake until 7am in the morning. I have gotten used to this routine and am comfortable with my lifestyle here, I do not know at which point I will feel bored of it. But I know that I will never get the chance to feel bored because I only have a month time left ... read more

Arrived in Bangkok this morning, early. They got us up at six'ish and the train got in Bangkok central Station at 7:10. Took my time to hike ~ an hour to the Dutch embassy and got some breakfast at diverse stands and a bakery. At first, I found d the sewery smell a bit overwhelming, but I got used to it. Made some pictures. Even saw a crocodile or lizard swimming in one of the cana.. Make that open sewers. Dutch embassy was not too helpful, due to the fact that the passport was not really 'lost'. I had to take my own council. Nata, by this time, had already offered to send it to me today, so I decided to try to get a train ticket to kanchanaburi without it. The railway is not connected ... read more

We were up before the crack of dawn today, 5:30 am and it was already 90 degrees outside, so it was forecast to be a scorcher. I put on a fresh pair of shorts, a wicking shirt and a clean pair of socks and headed toward breakfast. We dropped our bags outside our room for the portage to the bus and walked along the Gecko filled outer halls to breakfast. For some damn reason I turned left instead of right, as was my norm. We followed the path and found ourselves at a crossroads where the dining room was toward our right across the open pond. We turned in the right direction, and as I approached the tables, I attempted to step down and missed, resulting is a gracefull fall into the pond! Yup I was ... read more

I write this missive standing at the counter at the Bangkok Airport aka, Don Mueang Regional Airport on our way to Chang Mai, a port of call north of Bangkok. Let me begin catching up from last night before I start on today. As you may recall we, that is Rick, Richard and myself, planned on dinner and a cruise on the river on the White Orchard. I took little nap before the cruise so I would be well rested for the evening. At the appointed hour, 7:50PM, the trio met at the cruise desk and were escorted the short walk outside the hotel to the boarding pier. There we met about 250 fellow cruise dinners, all pushing and shoving as is the norm when people come together to have fun. It looks like Asians have ... read more

I write to you today from the pool at the Sheraton Bangkok, cappacino in hand, bathed by a warm breeze overlooking the river. Splendid, is the only work I can come up with. Last night it rained, and I mean rained. It was a monsoon, truly. The actual monsoon season officially ended Oct 31, so we are not too far out of the rainy season, so a heavy rain is not out of the question. The good new is that by morning it was mealy a trickle which ended just about the time we left braeakfast. Breakfast now that was a meal to behold. Foreign hotels know how to do breakfast. Ours was a buffet that took two floors to hold all the delights. Floor one was breads, juices, cakes and an assortment of foods not ... read more

One really gets a sense of how big the world is when you sit on a plane for 14 hours, traveling at 425 miles an hour, aloft at 35,000 feet only to learn you are still not at your final destination. Such was the case when we left LAX airport at midnight Friday November 3. Flying west, we crossed the international dateline so we got to relive Friday all over again. Believe me it was not a day I wanted to relive. We left Toledo for the drive to Detroit, the plan was to depart at noon or so, but one of our party was 30 minutes late. He forgot his shaving kit, so he returned home to get it, after traveling half way from his house to mine! Glad to know he will be well ... read more
