The sleeper train the second time round was hell. It was 30 degrees and the rude railway officer was seriously testing us waking us up at 3am demanding to see our tickets. There’s no such thing as privacy on these trains. Our mosquito bites have got well out of hand aswell. We’re absolutely covered in blisters from them. Trust me, insect repelled DOESN’T WORK. Nothing is stopping the buggers. We got into Bangkok at 5.30am, sweaty and sleep deprived. We wouldn’t recommend to anyone getting a plane 6 hours after a sleeper train, it was uncomfortable and extremely tiring. We flew with Vietjet from Suvarnabhumi airport and finally arrived in Hanoi at 8pm. Vietnam is beyond anything I’ve ever seen before, it’s incredible. Roll on the next 3 weeks! ... read more

Woolly says – We’d spent a day buying some essentials, well according to the women they were, I certainly don’t need shampoo or shower gel to keep me looking handsome. We also wanted to save ourselves for a trip to one of Bangkok’s night markets, one metro stop away was Rod Fai Train Market noted for it’s vintage feel which sounded like something we might enjoy. We arrived as the sun was setting and the stalls were setting up and more importantly before the masses started to arrive which enabled us to wander happily past clothes and make up stalls (including one that sold clothes for mammoths!), bag and jewellery areas and to see the fascinating food on display. For the first time we saw the delights of deep fried cockroaches, crickets and other small wiggly ... read more

The morning seemed to have passed by the time we reached the river ferry, the three of stood looking at the boats bouncing on the choppy waters, it didn’t look anything like the serene crossing we had envisaged. Woolly says – Just getting onto the boat was tricky as it rocked and swayed in the Chao Phraya river, as long boats blasted past and huge barges forced the water onto the dock. Luckily it was only a short trip across to the other side and it did give us a brilliant view of Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan known as Wat Arun for short. The temple derives its name from the Hindu god Aruna, often personified as the radiations of the rising sun. Although the temple had existed since at least the seventeenth century, its ... read more

Woolly says – Our train journey from the coast back to the delights of Bangkok had been long and hot, even with fans in the carriages and windows open with a breeze running through my fur it was sticky. I was looking forward to a cool room and a chance to lie down, our digs for the next few nights provided the chilled room along with cockroaches and a bathroom that even I wouldn’t use and I’m a lot less fussy than the women. Having scoured alternatives and come up with very little unless we wanted to move twenty or so miles out of the city we decided to grin and bear it. The morning brought torrential rain to add to our slightly despondent mood and having re planned our days activities to an indoor location ... read more

We touched down in Bangkok at 6pm and wasted no time to get ourselves onto what we thought was Khao San Road which turned out to be a random but very similar street. The problem with Bangkok is all the streets here look identical so getting lost has proven to be easy. We’ve found that most of the locals are extremely attentive and helpful as it’s evident by our sun deprived skin and 3 scribbly maps that we are beginner backpackers new to Thailand. Thai women have laughed and called at us, “oh you! So white!”, it’s hilarious. The humidity here is overwhelming; 30 degrees at night is almost unbearable, especially coming straight from -5 degrees in Yorkshire. The roads are organised chaos. ‘Take a chance and walk across with your finger crossed and pray you ... read more

Sunday 11 March 2018 Weather back to sunshine after a cooler couple of days. Slept well. Our original plans changed due to technical difficulties! Thai tummy. Pat did some packing in the morning and we left the room at 1.30 pm for a stroll. We walked along the road for a while then back to Sena Fast for a Starbucks visit. Picked up some supplies in the supermarket and back to the room for 2.45 pm. Pat did some more packing in the afternoon and had said that she wanted a drink by the river on her last night. So in the evening we headed to the Asiatique mall to try and accomplish this and left the room at 6.30 pm. We both spoke to our Mothers in the afternoon as it is Mothers day back ... read more

Thursday 8 March 2018 continued We waited at the gate and saw the plane come on to the stand. The airport had quite a few shops and food outlets and was very well set up. Much better than I had expected. Boarding commenced and we walked out to the plane, which was nearly full. Only a short flight of about an hour. We were given our arrival cards on board. We circled Don Muang airport a few times, but eventually got down. Smooth landing. This arrival into Thailand was sort of not planned as we didn't know 100% whether we would do Cambodia or not. So, we thought we needed a visa on arrival. We filled in forms and were waiting in a queue for the form to be checked, when an official approached us, asked ... read more

Woolly says – Breakfast today was a croissant on the move, not the best of French pastries but it filled a small hole in my tummy. Having navigated our way through the underground system and back towards the Grand Palace with a little help from a tuk tuk driver we were at our first destination by 10.15am, sadly so were several hundred coaches filled with tourists. Keeping my paws firmly crossed that they were heading somewhere else we paid for our tickets and entered the gates of Wat Pho. Wat Pho is one of Bangkok's oldest temples and has existed before Bangkok was established as the capital by King Rama I. It is thought to have been built or expanded during the reign of King Phetracha (1688–1703), King Rama I ordered further construction and renovation of ... read more

Woolly says – I was ready hours before anyone and had even made the morning toast, I’d told them that the days tour would be starting at 7.30am and it was now 9! And we’d told him that we would be ready for 9 and we were…..well nearly. We headed back to the underground system and very proudly navigated our way to the station nearest to the Grand palace, coming out of the cool environment and back into the humidity was a struggle. Woolly says – Things for the girls was about to get worse, as we joined the queue to enter the palace, a very officious woman was barking at everyone about legs and arms, I merely sauntered past but Jo and Zoe started to rummage in their bags for there covering clothing ... read more

Woolly says – We’d had a great flight, the food on board was really good and washed down with a couple of wines (all included) I sat back to watch my film of choice. Bangkok International was huge and having stood in a queue for an hour to go through immigration we were finally stamped and ready to get going…..to another queue! Several weeks passed as we waited for our chance to get into a taxi, with humidity at one hundred per cent my fur was completely stuck to me and the women looked like wrung out dish cloths, just as I’d started to think abut where to put the Christmas tree on the concourse we were led to a waiting vehicle and our next adventure had begun. It seemed like a good time to fill ... read more
