Jo and Ian

A retired teacher, a freelance photographer and a Woolly Mammoth are off around the world !!!!!

My name is Jo and with my partner Ian, and our Mammoth we had spent over six months planning to drive round the world in a motorhome. Having rented our home, got jabs to protect us against everything, looked at hundreds of motorhomes, climbed in and out of hundreds of motorhomes, made endlesss lists and then made more lists we set off to start our journey. Seven weeks, 6000 miles and a fortune in fuel later we climbed out of the motorhome and inspected, tested and climbed in and out of every 4 x 4 we could find, we repacked and set off on our adventures again!

The Sun has got his Hat on

We made our way nearer to the coast and the sunshine, trying to find a campsite NEAR to the beach was a little more difficult than expected, this is Portugal so you would expect some but only 2 could we find. The decision was made to head down the coast and carry on if the description of ‘on the beach’ was inaccurate. An easy journey and as we made our way through the little streets of Fuzeta we arrived at the Camping Fuzeta. Woolly says – Georgie would have liked it here, the pitches are all flat and hard, very very hard as Ian found out when putting the tent pegs in. While Ian was hammering away Jo and I checked out the facilities, basic and pretty clean but not many of them for the number ... read more

Woolly says – I think I’m going to have to put my paw down with a firm tusk! 6am!!! Why do we have to wake up so early? We hadn’t meant to be up at this time but as the sun was rising and the warmth was taking over the tent we bundled a grumpy Mammoth into Oliver and headed off. Woolly says – I didn’t know where we were going to and all Ian and Jo would tell me was that I would enjoy it, I would have enjoyed more sleep! As we flashed by fields and lakes we continued to oh and ah over the beautiful scenery. Portugal is such a pretty place. It didn’t seem to take long before we were following a bumpy track and I say the sign – Badoca Safari ... read more

We woke early, really really early ….. Woolly says – dawn was breaking more like, Ian told us it was half seven so with the kettle boiling we all went about our morning wake up rituals, checking Jo’s phone I found that it was actually 6.30am!!!! What a time to wake me up!! For some reason Ian’s roaming time was still on Spanish time but in our cross over into Portugal we had gained an hour and were now on BST again. Not to be downhearted, it was a lovely morning and the sun was coming up along with the temperature, 15 degrees by the time we were packed and ready to go. Woolly says – I was down hearted! But putting my grumps away I sat eagerly looking around me as we headed down the ... read more

Like horses out of the starting gate we were up, packed and launching Oliver onto the road to get the earliest start we could. Woolly says – I hadn’t even opened my eyes and we were on the move, no breakfast, no nothing. With a promise of breakfast on route Woolly stared dolefully at the grey clouds as we sped along the N1. With a starting temperature of 3 degrees we needed to get closer to the sun and the 458KM seemed a small price to pay. Woolly says – We flashed past fields of cows and the lush greenness we have started to associate with Spain, I kept my eyes peeled for somewhere to pull in, kilometre after kilometre went by, do the Spanish never need to eat on their travels? Being Sunday I didn’t ... read more

This morning dawned with a steady drizzle and cars passing us covered in snow! We followed the smell of breakfast and tucked into pretty much everything on offer. Woolly says – I really enjoyed my sausage, bacon, egg, croissants, fresh pineapple and melon, not to mention toast, should keep me going for a bit. As we couldn’t delay the outdoors any longer if we wanted to see anything we wrapped up, well Jo and Ian did (it might have been better if I had worn my scarf as it was pretty chilly round the tusks). With at least seventy places to see in Segovia according to our street map we picked a route that would allow us to go onto some and pass by others for photos. With Chinese, Japanese, Americans and pretty much every other ... read more

Waking to a chilly morning with the sun struggling to get out we found the area for breakfast and once Woolly had hovered up cheese, ham, toast, eggs, bacon, yoghurt and some of my omelette we hoisted Woolly and set a course for Desfiladero de Yecla near to Sto. Domingo de Silos. Woolly says – Breakfast was good and it’s only polite to finish everything off! The big black angry clouds were still in the distance but as we travelled down the N1 (N now stands for ‘nothing to look at’ roads) the sun seemed to grow brighter and we felt hopeful for the day. Turning onto the BU 910 (BU now stands for bumpy and uncomfortable to travel down) we found ourselves driving through beautiful scenery again with red loamy soil, rock formations, olive trees ... read more

We woke early on Wednesday to find it was raining cats and dogs, the tent was seriously wet, having hummed and harred over a cupper we went for the stay in place option for the day. With Ian’s highly accurate weather app telling us that the rain would stop at 8pm (it actually stopped at 8.02pm!) we decided on a catch up on laundry and find a supermarket day. Woolly say – I had a look outside the tent but couldn’t see any cats and dogs so I’m not sure what they are on about, there was an awful lot of rain though. Once showered we set off to find a supermarket, driving round the town of Zarautz was different, with stray people walking in front of Oliver and no sign of anything that looked like ... read more

A peaceful night except for Woolly’s snoring! The clouds were a bit lower this morning but the view was still stunning, the Pyrenees were still there and we hadn’t dreamt them. Woolly says – Snore, me….never! We seemed to be ready and packed into Oliver in good time and were at The Grottes de Betharram by 9.30am, although it opened at nine we were told by a sweet French gentleman with beret that the trip would start at ten past ten, we hovered around before getting on a coach. The coach took us further up the mountainside before we alighted at a building. Paying over 13 Euro each (approximately £11.90 GBP), we hoped it would live up to the price. We entered the caves with another bereted French man who split us into groups of French, ... read more

An early start, always helps if you read your watch correctly! Ian had pretty much packed everything by the time I had showered and sorted the mammoth out. With 258KM of road between us and our nights stop, we set off through kilometre after kilometre of Vin Yards, they seemed to go on forever. Through forests and finally through windy roads we could see the Pyrenees in the distance. Woolly says – My first really big mountains, I’ve seen Snowden and a few others but these provide the border between France and Spain, they looked incredible, no snow in sight but I’m sure we’ll get to that. Pitching up at Camping Arrouche in the foothills of the Pyrenees and within a kilometre of Lourdes, we had a stunning setting for the night. The lady in the ... read more

Well rested after a great night’s sleep, a lie in (well it is Sunday!) we seemed to have found a little of heaven, quiet, scenic and with very good facilities. Camping at Le Pressoir seems to be a good find only wish it was a little warmer (not complaining at the 19 degree average though) so we could go in the pool for a swim! Woolly says – A great start to the day, especially with Ian making us boiled eggs and French Soldiers. Having removed all traces of yolk from my fur we drove the 2km to Le Chateau Vieux Mougnac. We could have walked but unsure as to quite where it was and if it was actually open (it doesn’t give opening times on their web page) we took Oliver for a short spin. ... read more
