Friday 2 March 2018 We both had a good nights sleep, after an early night. A retail day today. Stirred early and on our way at 9.30 am. Back across the river on the ferry and up to the Skytrain. First I added some money to our Rabbit cards and then a simple journey without changing to the last stop at National Stadium. A friend had previously given us a recommendation about MBK Mall and there are signs from the station, so easy to find. It is seven floors of shopping. We arrived at 10.30 am and did every floor leaving at 4.00 pm. We had refreshments occasionally to give us a break. We made some purchases, nothing of particular note but good value. Our journey back was easy and we were in the room at ... read more

The BTS (Bangkok Transport System) Skytrain cuts right through the heart of downtown Bangkok, making it a very convenient and efficient way to get around. Merchants were pretty quick to figure this out, and big shopping malls sprouted up along the Skytrain path. Early on, retailers placed a god or goddess on the premises of their buildings, believing that the presence of a deity would bring good luck and prosperity. And, they figured, when people came to the shrine they just might buy something, too.Judging by the sheer magnitude of retail exuberance found along this street, it looks like they were right. There are six – count ‘em six – shrines along this section of Ploen Chit Road, in the shadow of the Skytrain. While I didn’t visit them all, there are some kind of interesting ... read more

So the journey from the airport (Don Muang) to Khao San Road turned out to be easy and cheap, only 50b. This was mainly because there was no one to sell us a ticket at the limobus desk (150b) and the information lady said to take the number 4 instead, the local express bus. It took less than 45 mins and you buy a ticket on the bus. It leaves from outside entrance 6 and is orange. The conductor told us when we got to the right stop. I vaguely remembered the street from 8 years ago. It stops just before Rambuttri so you carry in about 20 yards and turn left in Khao San. The bus back to the airport is from the same stop, it does a loop round, so we are going to ... read more

Komm Junge geh ruhig schauen ?

Also zog ich mich kurz in ... read more

“Why did you come here?” A young Thai woman asked me that during a tour of the Phya Thai Palace. In fact, she asked me that twice during the tour. “Not many people come here; even Thai people don’t come here.” It’s a shame, really, that more people don’t come to the Palace – not to be confused with the Grand Palace, where the press of sweaty tourists can try one’s patience. It certainly tried mine; I split off from the crowd before I even got on the ferry to go upriver. The Phya Thai Palace has some interesting stories, and the buildings and grounds are beautiful. Getting here isn’t that hard, though it takes some perseverance. The directions I had said to take the Skytrain to the Victory Monument, go past the Queen Sirkit Children’s ... read more

We made it to Bangkok! Origionally I wasn't going to do a blog for this trip because I just wanted to relax and not have to write anything but there's so much stuff we've seen so far that I really wanted to share, plus I like reading back on what we've done. We arrived in Bangkok on the Thursday night, took a taxi to our hotel and then went straight to bed as it was about 10.30pm and we were tired from our flight. Before we got into bed though we had to take take off these beautiful looking towel swans with petals everywhere which they had made for us. We also had a laugh at our toilet which had many different options including an enema and a feminine wash (which we didn't try by the ... read more

We arrived in Bangkok just after midday. We visited my aunty Dhum and her family who live in the outer suburbs of Bangkok. So we got there and saw her and uncle Menk, then all mu cousins On, Pa, Lek and Phong who came with his wife. Then there are the grandkids – 2 of whom are grown up teenagers (Firm and Fair) and Arm who is around 10. And that's just one branch of the family tree! We had lunch there and after a short visit Lueng dropped us off at the Mercure hotel in the centre of Bangkok – Siam square. As we always book and executive room, there is an included happy hour at 5-7pm. I went for a swim on the rooftop pool, then we went to happy hour to take advantage ... read more

I like small museums, the more off-beat and quirky the better. Small museums are easier to navigate and usually aren’t very crowded. I visited a couple of museums like this in Bangkok, but first, the boat ride. I had taken the commuter ferry up the Chao Phraya River when I visited Wat Arun and Wat Pho. The commuter ferny is undoubtedly the quickest, easiest and least expensive way of going up-river. But I hadn’t taken one of the water taxis that ply the canals, or khlongs, of the city. One of the other bloggers on this site suggested I check it out (thanks, Siewch!) and it sounded like a fun experience. Make no mistake; taking a water taxi is most definitely not a leisurely boat ride down a lazy river. This is a fast, efficient way ... read more
