So the journey from the airport (Don Muang) to Khao San Road turned out to be easy and cheap, only 50b. This was mainly because there was no one to sell us a ticket at the limobus desk (150b) and the information lady said to take the number 4 instead, the local express bus. It took less than 45 mins and you buy a ticket on the bus. It leaves from outside entrance 6 and is orange. The conductor told us when we got to the right stop. I vaguely remembered the street from 8 years ago. It stops just before Rambuttri so you carry in about 20 yards and turn left in Khao San. The bus back to the airport is from the same stop, it does a loop round, so we are going to give it a go tomorrow. Not really sure of the times but we will allow plenty of time and jump in a taxi if we have to.
We got to the hotel (Rikka Inn, £32 a night for a twin) at midday, just when everyone was checking out. We had to wait, then the room wasn’t ready so we left our stuff and went
for lunch and a spot of nail research. Right outside the hotel is a street stall, pad thai and spring rolls, 105b, bargainous. Went back at 2, having asked for a high floor and room at the side, hopefully it would be quiet. We got the top floor where the pool is. Hurrah for clean beds, clean bathroom, boo for the fact that it is too small to unpack anything, nowhere to put your stuff except for 3 hangers. Luckily it’s ok for 2 days. We went up to the pool, which had lots of free sunbeds, aka instruments of torture. They are wooden with no cushions. The pool is very attractive, a nice breeze but agony lying there for any length of time. There are nice towels, you’d need 6 each to make the sunbeds comfy.
In the evening we were on a mission to find somewhere to paint our toes with flowers. Especially as I’ve been living with the Saigon Hello Kitty Disaster Nails for over 3 weeks. After asking in a million places we finally found one finally, Darin on Rambuttri, next to the Macaroni Club. It was a bit pricey, 350b each, for flowers on
big toes and a pedicure but they did a really good job and our feet are baby soft and very clean now. Also it was highly amusing watching the people in the ‘hospital’ side having facials, including a guy with a bright pink face mask taking a selfie and others having their blackheads squeezed. Eugh!
After this we saw a sign saying pizza. Ooh, we thought! Sat down, ordered noodle soup and stir fried vegetables. Go figure! Then we were far too exhausted for anything else and went back to the hotel. Delighted that the noise level was minimal in our room. A it later it was cranked up somewhat and we could hear every word. Forced our squidgy earplugs in as far as they could go. Still singing along, but at some point must have fallen asleep. At some point it must have stopped because when I woke up at 4 it was quiet. In the morning we discovered WHY it had been so noisy. There is an inch gap around the top of the window where it doesn fit the frame, so pointless having double glazing. We have wedged a towel in it to see if that
helps.
Went out for breakfast along the street, ok for 130b. Then did a spot of shopping, bus stop research and walked across the road and down towards the river along Sok Rambuttri, a really nice backpacker area but not as hectic or expensive as KSR. At the river we were trying to share a boat to go on a river trip but the boat guys were really aggressive and the other tourists not quick enough on the uptake that if we shared it would be much cheaper. 1000b for 2 of us was too much and we didn’t like their attitude, so walked away. Anyone who wants to splurge, go down to the public river boat station (Old Phra Arthit, next to a restaurant called Venice Vanich) down a little alleyway (marked) and there are long tail boat guys there, but try to find someone to share with before you start negotiating.
I ummed and aaahed and finally decided to get some washing done before Singapore, so we found an express laundry 80b a kilo and it would be done before 8pm. It is called Cherry Laundry and is down an alleyway connecting KSR with Rambuttri. You
can see all the machines so know it isn’t going to be done in a stream somewhere, or by a 6 year old. We went back and got my stuff, dropped it off and went back to our nail place, Sam for a French manicure and me for a 150b leg and foot massage (30 mins). It didn’t hurt enough, more of a bit of a rub.
Fingers crossed for the bus tomorrow. A spot more googling required, to shed light on the timing!
