Khao San Road.... it's interesting. As you know from my last post I was nervous about coming here, but I'm pleased to report I am alive!! It's a street littered with random market stalls selling everything from t-shirts to deep fried scorpions. Whilst we didn't buy anything it was good fun to look at. There are bars and restaurants and Thai massage parlours offering a 15 minute foot massage for 110 Baht. There are also men women and children walking up and down the road selling random wooden things, random light up things and laughing gas. We sat in a bar and had a few cocktails whilst doing one of our fave activities... people watching! There was a guy dancing with fire, an old man and what was quite clearly a lady boy enjoying a nice ... read more

Cab rides here are fun... not! You're lucky if there is a seatbelt, if not just hold on for dear life! You're told on all these travel advice websites to only get in metered taxis, but apart from going from Bangkok airport to our hotel, we've not come across one, it's easier to tell them "I'll pay you this much" - "Ok, hop in". We visited the Grand Palace today, which was unfortunately closed - so we actually visited a temple instead. Funny story, we had read online about random people telling you an attraction was closed, and then trying to guide you to a gem shop. When we stepped out of our taxi a man in a military type outfit came up to us and asked where we were headed, we told him and he ... read more

What people don't really tell you about travelling is the stress of finding somewhere to stay. Maybe it's us, maybe spending too much time reading in depth reviews on Trip Adviser and judging a hotel on its wifi availability and cleanliness star rating isn't helping the situation, but hotel hunting is not fun. We're not those people that can just turn up and find somewhere, we are planners, we like to know where we are going. But after three hours this morning and lots of 3am googling the last few days (jet lag is still very much real) we have finally decided staying in Phi Phi isn't for us, instead we are going to Krabi and will day trip to Phi Phi. Sorted... ok now to find a hotel in Krabi. Ergh. I mentioned that the ... read more

I'll be honest, I didn't have very high hopes for Bangkok, I'd been given a lot of the same reviews and advice before we got here. Maybe because of my low expectations, that's why so far I don't hate it. Sure there are a lot of negatives, for one thing the place stinks, but honestly after the rudeness and abruptness we've encountered whilst being in Dubai, it's actually so nice to be greeted with a friendly smile, to have someone go above and beyond to let you check in 4 hours early... those things to me make the difference between enjoying myself and walking around with a face on. The place is scary busy, there are people constantly under my feet! We went into the MBK Mall which is a 5 minute walk from our hotel, ... read more

So now we have are back in Thailand, but in the south. 5 nights in Bangkok and then on to Koh Samui (island) -- come on guys - get the atlas out (or Google it) - south of Bangkok in the Gulf of Thailand. The bus journey was eventful again. We had one Cambodian woman and her son/grandson together with 3 live chickens in a plastic shopping bag, and a large white sack which kept moving around. Curiosity got the better of us after a while and we had to ask what was in the white bag - she opened it to reveal 3 large frogs! Such is life here. The bus ride didn't take too long, but the Thai passport control had us queueing for about 2 1/2 hrs in a snaking line with all ... read more

Since last had a very nice week or so in Chiang Mai. Its much more easy going than Bangkok and while I was there the weather was a bit cooler. Among its many attractions is a huge night market selling, well just about everything. Have spent many an hour haggling away buying you all presents, when I say you I mean me of course. It also has some very good second hand English book shops to while away an afternoon in. I stayed for New year which was a great night. Around 9 pm the sky started to light up with Chinese lanterns which carried on until well after midnight. There must have been thousands upon thousands of them, surprised it didn't burn the place down. All in all a great week. I had planned that ... read more

So very soon we will be off for 40 days around South East Asia, starting in Thailand. Having never been to this part of the world before, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to take. Do I dress for summer, Spring, or what. Don't want to take too much luggage, we need to travel light, so I have started laying out stuff, in the hope that inspiration will come! It's not only the packing though. We need to organise the cat, the house, the MOT on the car and so much more - oh, and try and get to grips with technology, starting with trying to figure out how to write a blog.... read more

5th Jan: Arrived at Don Mueang around 10 am, headed straight for an iced coffee to wake me up. Forgot how sugar is instantly added to all coffee beverages in South East Asia. The girl seemed so pleased when she told me she hadn't made it too sweet. I was gutted but at least it was drinkable. I took the A1 airport bus to Mo Chit, it cost 30 baht and took about half an hour. There I transferred to the BTS skytrain. I was made to dump my coffee cup before heading through the turnstiles, I hate not eating the ice in my iced coffee. BTS was 42 baht and I think it was about 10 stations to Nana, where I was staying. A five minute walk had me at the hostel. It was about ... read more

With no work lined up in January or February we have taken the opportunity to return to South East Asia for a bit of travelling. There will be some familiar places on this trip, but most of it will be new for us. We're quite excited really! KLM announced a few months ago that they were going to start flying from Alicante to Amsterdam, from where connections are available to the rest of the world. That meant we could get to Bangkok with just one change instead of the two changes we have to make if we fly with Qatar. The promotional prices to launch the route were unmissable so here we are back in Bangkok. The seats were nowhere near as comfortable as Qatar and the Boeing 777 was full so we had to endure ... read more
