Sukumvit hasn't changed much in the past few years but there do seem to be a few more bars, restaurants and convenience stores than we remember. We have certainly enjoyed being back in Asia from a culinary perspective and the relaxed feel to the place has suited us down to the ground. We saw in the New Year with our friends Nat and Ian, and their young daughter, Orla. It had been over 5 years since we had last seen Nat when we were working in Tunisia. Orla wasn't even a glint in her eyes back then! Ian is working in Bangkok for a while and by sheer coincidence they were staying just 4 streets away from our hotel. It was a subdued celebration with fireworks banned presumably out of respect for the mourning period which ... read more

Since I last wrote I've moved about a bit. Spent a couple more days in Penang before moving on to Singapore for a long weekend. Its always been a bit more pricey than the rest of Asia but seems even worse now. Not sure if its inflation or the fact that the pounds worth the same as the matabeli gumbo bead. Stopped in at the famous Raffles hotel long bar with the intention of having a Singapore sling but at an eye watering £19 a shot I had a beer instead. Spent a lot of my time walking round China town and Little India. Thought - Why is it always China town and little India and not little China and India town? Leaving Singapore I took the bus up to Malacca which should have been straight ... read more

So it's bye bye Burma and dust, hello again Bangkok, food, separate showers and the chance to get clean! First though we had to spend 1 1/2 hours getting through Don Muang Airport which was not fun and longer than the flight took from Yangon!! Still that was forgotten once we arrived at the Avani Riverside Hotel, omg we went from no hot water or soap and a view of a wall to 5 star luxury with a view of the river and the city, not to mention pillows like clouds and all those little toiletries etc etc, we must have looked and smelt totally out of place ha ha. The hotel was also connected to a small shopping centre, all decorated for Christmas, with ribs for tea and a Dairy Queen (that gave you loads ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521We started our day with breakfast at the hotel. The fruits and fruit juices were amazing -- a favorite part for me of the Thai cuisine. We were all pretty excited for our first day of proper sightseeing in Bangkok. We got ourselves sorted and then made our way via boat to the Grand Palace, which really is grand! The King of Thailand had recently died and the Thais so revere him there is black with ribbon literally everywhere! Many locals were at the palace to pay their respects so we could not see the main building of the Palace but it was not a problem. It is so large we saw many beautiful parts. That day Anna had worn a dress with a scarf which was not good enough for entrance so we ... read more

Land of Smiles – Thailand – December 2016 What a wonderful change of pace: my flight from Shanghai to Bangkok doesn’t depart until early afternoon so I can sleep late, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, pack my bag and still have enough time to relax in the executive lounge before returning to the airport. Again, via the Maglev high-speed train and this time, I get to enjoy the ride during daylight hours. This is probably my easiest travel day yet – just over 4 hours to the Thai capital and I’ll arrive around dinner time. The temperature had dropped drastically by the time my driver arrived to escort me back to the airport. It was close to the freezing mark with high winds, but I hadn’t brought a coat as most of this trip will be spent ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521We met our fellow travelers -- Barbara and Charlotte (B and C) -- the following morning and did a little shopping in the mall next to our hotel. They had traveled to Bangkok the opposite way around the globe, traveling from DC to Frankfurt, and then on to Bangkok. They arrived early on Friday morning, so we had the advantage of a least a few hours in a proper bed. It was fun to shop as it was very quiet early in the morning (the storekeepers always wanted to make a bargain with us as it was the excuse of "the first sale of the day!"). The Thai merchants do like to haggle, so it was fun. Barbara said I was a little rough with them at first, but that comes from those haggling ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521We transferred planes in Tokyo, and after another seven-hour flight, we landed in Bangkok shortly before midnight on Thursday. We checked into the Royal Orchid Sheraton in Bangkok, which had a very large Christmas tree which made us happy since we did not want to miss the holiday. We had a beautiful room overlooking the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. We checked the view, the room and fell asleep. It was nearly 2:00am when we got into bed, so sleep came easily.... read more

David here... We got up at 07:30 for breakfast, which was actually pretty good at The Gallery. Decent coffee, different choices each day, the cheesy mash, pork in mushroom sauce and chicken in black pepper sauce being my favourites. No idea why they kept the lids of the food open and the air conditioning blasting at it to make it cold. Anyway, we packed up our things and headed down to check out at 08:30 so we would be ready for our pick up 10 minutes later. No sooner had we checked out than our minivan arrived. There were no seats together available but we could sit one in front of the other. Suzanne quickly realised that she would be better off in the front seat instead of next to the 2 Japanese girls who had ... read more

After what seemed like an unusually long flight we made it to Bangkok and spent the first day doing practically nothing other than a dip in the hotel pool and sitting like zombies in a street bar!. After a second nights rest we were recovered and ready to go. We took a walk to the pier by the wide river that runs through the city of Bangkok. The river offers a brilliant way to get around, avoiding the traffic congested roads and it's quite scenic too. The public boat stops every few hundred metres or so, zig zaging across the river dropping people of. A fare to anywhere is just 14 baht. ( around 25p) We cruised past the Grand Palace without stopping off as we'd been there before and instead got of at Wat Arun ... read more
