We woke up early today and took the MRT to Taipei City Hall to catch a glimpse at the prosperous Taipei Xinyi District. We stopped by the Discovery Centre of Taipei to shop for some souvenirs before proceeding to the exhibition space. This was the place I had fond memories of during the 1st trip. The second trip proved no less interesting as we took close to 2hrs to view through the exhibits concerning the city’s past and present. A visit to the place is a must to know the city better. The Taipei 101 tower was beginning to take shape under the glazing sun. We took pictures of the icon and I must admit that it is always a challenge to take nice shots of her. Many a times, the 508m tower is obscured by ... read more

Xiaonanmen Wulai Hotsprings Bitan Miramar Ferris Wheel Shilin Nite Mkt Day 5 of our trip and we were back to where we started, the city of Taipei, home to 2.6 million inhabitants. While many Taiwanese had associated this city as another metropolis that is not livable, our impression of her had been great right from the start. Her unique charm has drawn repeat visitors overtime. Our day started early today to visit the Xiaonanmen (Little South Gate) which once hold fort of the Taipei City Walls. Okie it is nothing spectacular but since it was a MRT station away from my hotel, it was relatively harmless for us to view it to reminisce of the major changes that have taken place in the city over the past 100 years. Alisan Alisan is a must-visit attraction in Taiwan according to most people. Some facts: Framed for its spectacular sun-rise viewing experience and the 71km mountain railway that ascended some 2100m from Chiayi. This railway was one of the legacies left by the Japanese in Taiwan after 50 years of brutal colonization between 1895-1945. Initially, the mountain railway was used by the Japanese for their logging operations in Alisan. Today, it is used by visitors as a mode of transportation from Chiayi. Anyway, the tour started early today for us to view the sun-rise over at Tatajia @ Yushan National Park, 45 minutes from the Hotel. The sun goddess was not on our side. She was engulfed by the thick layer of clouds over the mountains. But we managed to witness the spectacular display of the ... read more

We left Taipei at 8.35am today on our way to Chiayi - 3 hours to the south by the express train. The amount of leg room was definitely wider than the Jetstar Asia plane that we took earlier. 10.55 am - The “train stewardess” started selling Bian Dan which was picked up from Taichung. It was delicious as we had a hurried lunch. The next station was Chiayi. 11.36 am - Chiayi and were immediately harassed by taxi touts who somehow knew that we were heading to Alisan. We had already anticipated the touting thanks to Lonely Planet. We sought refuge from the Tourist Information Centre where the helpful lady volunteer pointed us the direction of the bus station to Alisan. The wait continued until 1.10pm when the bus bounded to Alisan came by. From then, ... read more

Fun in Taipei The MRT (Jie Yun) could only bring us as far as to Yuanshan in the North on our way to Martyr’s Shrine (Zhong Lie Ci) in Northern Taipei. From there, it was a short taxi ride to our destination as we did not wish to miss the infamous hourly changing of guards. 7 times daily, 365 days a year performing the same routines, the Military Policemen had promised to deliver in front of hoards of the locals and foreigners. Hiking up the Grand Hotel (Yuanshan Da Fan Dian) was an enjoyable experience under the cold winter. It was nevertheless worth the effort as the building itself was a joy to the eyes. A free shuttle bus brought us back to the MRT Station. I had always love the way commuters kept right ... read more

It was love at first sight during my first visit in July 2005 to this beautiful island about 55 times the size of Singapore. This December trip reaffirmed my love for this island, home to some 23.5 million people. There was much to acclaim about regardless of her small size. From having the tallest building in the world to having the highest mountain in Northeast Asia and the 2nd tallest Ferris wheel in Asia. The Taiwanese are in this frantic race to become world leaders in infrastructure. And a new high speed railway aka bullet train is slated to open in 2006 to link Taipei and Kaoshiung together under 2.5 hours. Anyway before I digress too much from the usual fare that is available from Lonely Planet, we reached Taipei in the evening of 10 Dec ... read more

I have arrived safely in Taipei after a 13.5 hour flight. It was sad saying goodbye to Eric this morning, and then I had to wait in a long line to check in. I bought some Indian Rupees to have on hand when I arrive. In the departure lounge I met Heidi and John, a young couple traveling to Australia. As it turned out, they were sitting near me on the plane and we got a chance to chat near the end of the flight. Thanks again for re-braiding my hair Heidi! The meals were decent, as were the movies, and the service on China Airlines was great. My seatmates, Loretta and Jeff were very pleasant. All in all, it was a reasonably enjoyable flight. We landed here at about 1630 local time, or about 0030 ... read more

prvy den Let z Aucklandu na Taiwan prebehol OK, za zmienku stoji azda len vzdelavaci kresleny film o vtacej chripke, ktory nam premietali v lietadle a ktory prebiehal takto: Kreslena postavicka pripominajuca Pokemona kychala, ochkala, soplila, horuckovala a kadejako inak prejavovala symptomy chripky. Preto sa dobrovolne prihlasila na Vladnom Oddeleni Karanteny kde ju k jej obrovskej radosti zobrali do sanitky. Potom film nazorne a kreslenou formou v style "Manga" ukazal, ze netreba jest vtacie hovna a pred papanim si treba umyt ruky. Fakt zazitok. Zuzka zuvacku rychlo prehltla. Ja som ju schoval za zadnu osmicku vedla plomby. - ... read more

Beitou, known as the Hotspring Town, is a popular weekend getaway at northend of Taipei city. Just 20 minutes away from Taipei' Train Station by MRT or Metro Rapid Transit, Beitou provides a perfect relaxing spot for the stressful white-collars working in the political and commercial capital of Taiwan. The enchanting journey to the easy accessible Hotspring Town begins at the Xinbeitou (New Beitou) MRT station. Across the street to the station is the entrance to a park known as Beitou Hotspring Park. Beitou Hotspring Park serves as the green refugee for the local residence. However even visitors like you and me may also find some surprises there such as tropical plants, green maze, and a creek running from the hotspring. Of course along the way you will be enjoying sulfur air, not fresh air as ... read more

After marrying in the summer of 2005 Natalie and I decided to travel to Taiwan to teach English. We arrived there in November and spent about a month checking out the country and contemplating where to settle in and find some jobs. On a whim, largely because we were sick of hanging around train stations, we decided to go for Kaohsiung, the southern city. The southern part of Taiwan seemed to have better access to the mountains and Kenting with its killer beaches and national park on the southern tip of Taiwan. All in all we spent about 8 months in Kaohsiung teaching english, exploring, and generally trying to overcome confusion. Our, stay there was certainly enjoyable, stressful at times, but fun none-the-less. Look for more on our adventures later. Cheers, Tim... read more
