Another huge week! Many groups have been coming in to create art. I'm working with a group of architecture students to create tree demon lantern puppets, and local installation artist Chao is working with another group of the same students on deer lantern puppets. The students are really talented, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the pieces turn out! We also had another huge group of architecture students (70!) arrive to create large scale sea creatures. More on them in an upcoming blog.... read more

Taiwan is the shit! Bus gets a flat tire on the expressway? No problem...keep on truckin'. Sidewalk too crowded with people and parked scooters? No problem...walk on the road. Feel like crossing an intersection against a red light and 6-lane traffic? No problem...just step out and they'll drive around you. Taiwan is an off-the-map destination with off-the-wall traffic and out-of-this-world food. Everyone will find something enjoyable about the Ilha Formosa (Beautiful Isle). Taiwan is blessed with some of the best cuisine in the world, thanks in part to the influence of aboriginal peoples, Chinese immigrants, and Japanese occupation. While restaurant decor is usually less than desirable, the food makes up for any aesthetic shortcomings - it's cheap, aromatic, and delicious. The only exception might be stinky tofu, which looks, smells, and probably tastes like it was ... read more

Today was a big transition—from the sheltered environment of the academy to the real world of teaching English in rural and isolated Taiwan. The closing ceremony was a bit rushed because we all had trains to catch. I gave a little speech as class leader, and got my certificate and a photo op with the da lao ban (director) of the place. The train takes a little over three hours from Taipei to Guangfu, but that is partly because we have to go north to avoid the mountains before swinging south. The first part of the rail journey—getting out of Taipei—is uninspiring. Taipei is rather like a person whose lack of physical attractiveness belies a fine character and a sharp intellect. It is worth the effort to get to know such a city, and such a person. ... read more

It’s hard to believe that I’m actually getting paid for doing what I’m doing—getting free Chinese and tai chi lessons, not to mention teaching tips and cultural insights into Taiwan. As much as I have been enjoying myself in Sansia, I am really looking forward to going to my assignment in Guangfu. Not just yet, maybe. A couple more days will be good. There was an aboriginal festival in a nearby park the other night, so a bunch of us wandered over for a butcher’s. Formosan aboriginals were originally Polynesians, I understand, and the dancing reflects that fact. There was a stage set up beneath the stars and the beautiful sub-tropical trees, and with the balmy air it brought Hawaii to my mind. The major difference is, of course, that I’m getting paid to be here--instead of ... read more

I continue to be baffled by some of the English slogans I see over here. Just before I left Taipei on Monday morning, I saw a young woman wearing a t-shirt that said “Don’t be jealous”. She appeared to have been bitten by a mosquito that came back for seconds, so I concluded that she could not possibly be directing her comment to other women. These days later, I still have no idea regarding the significance of the words. The driver arrived at Banchiao Train Station on the dot, and took me to the National Academy for Educational Research. This is a lovely facility here, and I share a dorm room with an affable young fellow from Langley. Most of the other teachers are Americans. The outfit feeds us well, Chinese style. The tables are pre-set with ... read more

Holly came to visit this weekend taking the midnight train down south on a spur of the moment-it was worth it. We got to see a police raid---yes yes....I have never heard of such thing, especially over seas!!! Basically we were dancing and all of the suddent the music shut off, lights turned on, and EVERYONE cleared the dance floor like a bunch of mice running from cats. We had no clue what was going on until about 20, not exaggerating, police stormed in. Now maybe they were looking for a certain individual, but we were so confused why there were CHECKING EVERY persons ID. We were asked for our ARC cards-yeah were cool-ha! We left after that whole situation and went outside and there were like 10 police cars up and down the street-ha---- ... read more

Today we go to Wulai. We drive to a park area, trek a little way into the woods, cross a stream, and land on a rocky beach. I have brought the "Barbecue in a Box" setup that I received from Melody, and which provides up with quite a feast! There is a steady drizzle, but we manage to get our barbecue started and some people even go swimming. Afterwards, we head to the Wulai hot springs area. Besides the hot springs, Wulai is home to one of Taiwan's indigenous population and many of the items in the local shops reflect that culture. The hot springs feature several pools, from warm to scalding, and even a sauna. The real action however, is to be found on the other side of the walkway! You can scrabble down a ... read more

Braving the thumping heat, I spent the afternoon at Danshui Rao He. “Clearwater Riverbank”, in other words. It’s really too bad that I didn’t have my camera with me—I could have taken three pictures in a row of Chinese fishboats with the eyes painted on, the little shanty place where the fishers live, and modern high-rise apartments—all three while standing in the same place. I enjoyed BBQ squid and ham sausage for lunch, with mango over shaved ice for desert. There is an expression to the effect that old age and cunning will overcome youth and skill. Well, I proved it today. Some kids (fooling around and showing off) managed to push over one of those concrete blocks to stop cars from driving on the promenade, and they were trying to put it back into place ... read more
