Blog 12_Japan_2023 April 1 Port of Call: Hualien, Taiwan – Weather: 73°F/23°C – Light rain predicted – Wind 6 mph. Today we stopped at the island nation known as: Formosa or Taiwan or Republic of China your choice. Formosa – the original name of the island, given to it by European sailors means, Beautiful Island. Today’s excursion, eight hours in length, was entitled: Best of Taroko Gorge National Park & Hualien. Eleven busloads, approximately 484 guests participated in this excursion. Fortunately for us our bus was one of the first to leave the port, so we avoided much of the crowding experienced later in the day. The predicted light rain held off until we boarded the busses and then it intensified to a downpour. Fortunately, we had purchased ponchos so were afforded a modicum of rain ... read more

Vcera som bohuzial musel zmenit svoje rozhodnutie a dnes opustam dulan. Cs z taipei dojde do hualing uz doobeda v sobotu. Objednal som rovnaky hostel za fajn cenu cca 90td. Preco taka nizka ? Stąd, jadąc w odwrotnym kierunku niż przedwczoraj, dojechaliśmy na jakieś 15 minut do Taipei (pół smutnego banana) gdz... read more

We woke early, ate our vegetable breakfast and the guesthouse owner drove us back across the long bridge to the railway station in Xincheng to catch the train the fifteen minutes to Hualien. Our original plan had been to travel the coastal road from there down to Taitung, a coastal city and then onward to Kaohsiung which was our departure city for Taiwan. Bedore leaving home we had debated whether to travel the eastern or western side of the island. We chose the eastern side mainly because it was much less urbanised. We had read however that there was therefore much less public transport. Most locals used their own cars and tourists hired scooters or bicycles. Neither option really appealed to us - at least not to travel the length of the island on. Once we ... read more

Hualien is an industrial coastal city, and feels completely different to Taipei, much more rough and ready. For a start, walking the streets is hazardous: there are few pavements, and those that do exist are usually blocked by parked bicycles and scooters, so just walking around the city requires constant vigilance to avoid the traffic. The city feels tougher: not unfriendly, but not all welcoming smiles (as in Taipei and Kinmen) either. The train journey from Taipei took 4 1/2 hours because the fast train was sold out, so no time for more than a walk to the seafront in the evening. This area is being renovated and is a building site, so to get to the actual promenade everyone had to shuffle through a narrow alley formed between fences and tarpaulins blocking off the building ... read more

CRC is now moving into its last week in Taiwan. This last week is being spent in Hualien. Hualien is on the east coast of Taiwan and it's countryside. It's beautiful with mountains on either side and we are really close to the Pacific Ocean. We left by Taipei by train at 8:20 am and arrived at 11 am. We had KTV, karoke, the night before so we were in the VIP room. It was fun but I had a really tough day. I was pretty raw throughout the day. I will explain in a post soon (famous last words). But the short story is that I had a break down about leaving my Kendo Team at NCCU. However, on the brightside, we got to interact with students at Dong Hwa University in Hualien. The students ... read more

Kaksen dan. In brez skrbi, obisk v naslovu je bil povsem prijateljski. Ampak zacnimo z jutrom. Vse karte za vlak ob 8.35 so bile ... read more

Yesterday we were worthless and barely made it out of the house. When we did go, Eva walked around the city with us and we bought food to cook for dinner. We made a massive beef-filled squash and some salad and we couldn't eat it all, so we're gonna reheat it tonight. Today we went with Eva to Taruko National Park. It was really beautiful, but the trails we "hiked" were sort of a joke. The first one we did, the Swallow Grotto, was literally next to the main road. The second one, Lushui Trail, was overlooking the road -- not really the experience I'd been expecting, but nonetheless pleasant. Tomorrow we head to Taipei and meet our next CS host! When we woke up we decided to go to the hot springs that were "nearby". We took Eva's moped and had to ride through the freezing cold. Really it wasn't that cold, but the wind made it miserable. By the time we got there, 2 hours later and after a few stops for directions, I could barely walk. There are two hot springs places and we went to the first one we saw, Hoya Hot Springs. They have two buildings across the road from each other, one is a hotel, and one has the hot spring pools. We quickly changed and got in the cooler of the pools -- we couldn't bear to stick our icicle-like toes and fingers in the hot ones. So after we warmed up a bit we played around with all the ... read more
