The Sinhalese arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 6th century B.C., probably from northern India. Buddhism was introduced beginning in about the mid-third century B.C., and a great civilization developed at the cities of Anuradhapura (kingdom from circa 200 B.C. to circa A.D. 1000) and Polonnaruwa (from about 1070 to 1200). In the 14th century, a south Indian dynasty seized power in the north and established a Tamil kingdom. Occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and by the Dutch in the 17th century, the island was ceded to the British in 1796, became a crown colony in 1802, and was united under British rule by 1815. As Ceylon, it became independent in 1948; its name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972. Tensions between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil separatists erupted into war in 1983. Tens of thousands have died in an ethnic conflict that continues to fester. After two decades of fighting, the government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam formalized a cease-fire in February 2002, with Norway brokering peace negotiations. To be updated

Dalada Maligama

the temple of the tooth illuminated
From my not-work diary: August is the month of the spectacular two-week Esaka Kandy Perehera. As the country is now officially at peace, the historic city of Kandy was lit up with the fire crackers and lights of the religious and cultural festival of the Esala Perehra, complete with Kandyian dancing, majestic tuskers and the golden casket bearing the Sacred Tooth relic of the Buddha. The ceremonies include some rites such as the Cutting of the Waters, and echoes of rain storms - all appropriate at this time of the second rice harvest. A young jak tree is planted in each [View Full Entry]

Monday 3 August - from Visrama Today a decision was made to start a travel blog for family and friends. as I have finally gotten myself online with mobile broadband! OK, it took long enough you may be saying!! This blog will focus on some of the more general experiences ( as distinct from actual work programmes, though these will get a mention) of being here in sri lanka at this somewhat historic time. Following twenty years of civil war, the Government pushed rebel forces from the north of the island and a new era of rehabilitation and renewal began. Sri [View Full Entry]

English Competition  Asia » Sri Lanka
12 July The driver to take me to Kalutara where the English competition was being held was an hour late which meant he drove like a maniac to get me there for the afternoons judging….a little scary at times, a few white knuckles could be seen! I was the only judge, let alone foreigner, and I had to judge school children of all ages on their pronunciation, clarity, presentation and choice of English prose, drama or poem. Some of the kids were very difficult to understand, most yelled into the microphone so you could not get the pronunciation or clarity anyway [View Full Entry]

Sri Lanka vs Pakistan, International Cricket Ground, Galle
11 July It has been a while, so I need to catch up on what has been happening! Life is now becoming routine, with a few funnies added in just to keep you on your toes! Went to the cricket last weekend. It was a test match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. It was good to go and see and hear all the trumpets and noise makers in the stands! All other countries seem to do it so well. No one really drinks at these games even though there was a mobile bar! Tests are not the most interesting of games [View Full Entry]

The Match
Monkey Business

Hi again, just a quckie this time as we have spent most of the last 3 days relaxing by the pool/beach. We have our own elephant in the hotel grounds so we had to go for the obligatory ride, this time bare-back. She is 35 years old and moves very slowly, thankfully. We have made quite a few pals which is fun in the evenings, and have not a bad tan so far, 2 more days to top it up. See you all soon [View Full Entry]

Look no hands

So from the hills we then returned to normality and scorching heat in the south of the country. We had a 3 hour afternoon safari, so be prepared for loads of animal photos. We were a bit shaken up by the jeep but we had a really good time. We saw over 140 elephants, deer, buffalo, croc and a great variety of birds. The next day we travelled down to Galle, just in time to go onto the old fort and see the very last wicket of the Sri Lanak v Pakistan test cricket match (SL won). We finished the tour [View Full Entry]

Yes we are still in SL, but we spent a day up in the mountains at Nuwera Eliya. It was a long and winding drive up there and the weather deteriorated all the way. This is usual for up here though and it is where the tea plantations are located. It was like being back home on a typical October day. I had to wear long trousers! The hotel was very Scottish, even tartan curtains and a full size snoooker table, old colonial style. I even walked on a golf course for a bit but it was getting too dark to [View Full Entry]

I like Kandy! Asia » Sri Lanka
We have now reached the hill town of Kandy after a few stops from Habarana. We visited the Dambulla caves which were started in 1st Century BC. Very impressive with giant Buddhas and various religious relics in them, well worth a visit. We also had lunch at a cafe that our guide called in advance otherwise they would not have opened, tourism is quiet in SL just now. Yesterday evening we went to a music and dance show with firewalkers. Again this was great fun. Life is busy on the road so when we reach the hotels it is just enough [View Full Entry]

Fire-eater, very scary!
Relic of the tooth

We have now left the Colombo district as the tour has started. Our tour guide is Aloy, a lovely man who seems to know everything about Sri Lanka. Our first stop was to visit the elephant orphanage It's a great facility that looks after around 100 elephants. One is blind and another has one gammy foot from a rogue bomb from years ago. We saw them being fed then going for a swim, of sorts. So that was Wedneday's highlight. Today we are staying in the same region and after an architectural tour this morning of teh old capital at Poolanawura [View Full Entry]

On the wires outside my house.
As I sit on balcony at different times of the day there is any number of people walking past selling all sorts of things. We have the Maalu (fish) man selling his catch from the mornings run, we have the man selling Kiri which is milk and curd from his buffalo that roams in front of my home, on the weekends we have the ice cream man on his bicycle, his version of green sleeves is a pump type horn incessantly blown down the street (god knows how he keeps the ice cream frozen..), there is also the man selling lottery [View Full Entry]
