The Sinhalese arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 6th century B.C., probably from northern India. Buddhism was introduced beginning in about the mid-third century B.C., and a great civilization developed at the cities of Anuradhapura (kingdom from circa 200 B.C. to circa A.D. 1000) and Polonnaruwa (from about 1070 to 1200). In the 14th century, a south Indian dynasty seized power in the north and established a Tamil kingdom. Occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and by the Dutch in the 17th century, the island was ceded to the British in 1796, became a crown colony in 1802, and was united under British rule by 1815. As Ceylon, it became independent in 1948; its name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972. Tensions between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil separatists erupted into war in 1983. Tens of thousands have died in an ethnic conflict that continues to fester. After two decades of fighting, the government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam formalized a cease-fire in February 2002, with Norway brokering peace negotiations. To be updated

As so often happens just before a departure our work engagements increased, with people realising we are soon leaving cramming in last tasks. There was also a commensurate growth in social invitations as old(ish) friends tried to fit in goodbyes, and others whom we had yet to socialise with tried to squeeze in a visit before we left. On Monday we met with Sandra (Owner of the school I teach at and the school Jake and Elliot attend as well as lawyer and owner of a fair trade weaving business). Sandra was buoyed by having been listed as one of the [View Full Entry]

This day was definitely the highlight of this trip. Never in my life had I done so much charity work in 1 day... Not only we did charity work at Mihintale, the holiest place in Sri Lanka, we also went to several refugee camps in northern Sri Lanka to give/offer/donate/distribute... This day was also one of the holiest day in Sri Lanka, as it was Poson day - the day when Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka in 3rd century BC by Arahat Maha Mahinda (son of King Asoka of India), who appeared before the Sri Lankan King at Mihintale. The first 3 days of our trip is pretty blissful, as it was purely sightseeing. On the 4th day, things started to get much more "interesting". This was the day when the REAL work began. (The actual aim of this trip was to make offerings to monks, pilgrims, students, war refugees, etc... It's just that my mum and I arrived earlier than the main group and did some sightseeing before the main group arrived.) In the original schedule, the main group was supposed to arrive at Kandy this morning, to make offerings to monks in Kandy Tooth Relic Temple. However, the [View Full Entry]

We woke up at 6:30am today and had a quick breakfast at the hotel cafe. At 7:30am, Bala (the guy who offered us a day-trip for 3800 rupees) turned up with his friend. Bala had to work later, so he would let his friend drive us to the various attractions. Before he went to work, he accompanied us to this panoramic viewpoint on the hill, where we had a bird's eye view of Kandy and the surrounding mountains. He also accompanied us to Kandy Central Market, where we bought some fruits, T-shirts, incense sticks and candles. (At the end of the [View Full Entry]

After breakfast, we wanted to take a stroll along Galle Face Green, so we walked towards the coast. After passing through a security check and walking past the World Trade Centre, we arrived at the coast, only to be turned away by a soldier. We were disappointed, because the victory parade had already ended on the previous day and the Galle Face Green should be reopened by then. But, the soldier refused to let us through, citing security concerns. Do my mum and I look like terrorists who will blow up something on the seaside promenade? (Even if we want to [View Full Entry]

One fine day in May, my mum came back from her weekly Buddhist lecture and asked me whether I was interested to go to Sri Lanka. As a travel-addict, I said "why not?". Sri Lanka is a great travel destination (with plenty of beaches and archeological sites) but not many people go there because of the civil war and the damages caused by the 2004 tsunami. Now that the civil war has just ended and the tsunami is a fading memory, there is no better time than now to visit Sri Lanka (before everyone else realises it and flocks there too). We continue to settle into Kurunegala. By the time we leave we will be virtually part of the establishment, and sorry to leave for many reasons (although thrilled to finally quit the house which will definitely pass into family legend!) We have a favourite posh restaurant, Saruketha, and 2 reasonably priced nice bakery/cafés (In and Out and Pereras) one of which we frequent for evening meals and another where the grown ups meet for lunch when the boys are at school, or which we visit for lunches and 11ses together. This week was notable on various fronts. We were given bicycles [View Full Entry]

The donations and messages of support continue to flood in from our friends and relatives and are extremely gratefully received here. We are treated almost like royalty thanks to your generosity! The people at the hospital here can’t believe that foreigners are doing so much to help when so many local people aren’t doing anything. We have tried to explain that it is the same everywhere but they remain astounded by the compassion of strangers. We are in daily communication with the hospital regarding their immediate priorities and what we can do to assist. Yesterday we delivered 72 [View Full Entry]

22nd May to 24th May The MD of the schools I am teaching at and the boys are attending also runs a weaving business, one which we had intended to look at as we had read about it on our way here. It is a fair trade organisation providing work to women (so often work and therefore control of money goes to the men) and there are many reasons why fair work for women is critical to the development of a family and indeed a society. On Friday we were picked up by Sandra’s driver Nishanta, and taken to one of [View Full Entry]

It rained heavily all day Tuesday, and there were tropical thunderstorms and power cuts through the night. We awoke Wednesday to discover that some things are the same here as at home. It is a (newly declared) public holiday and as sure as day follows night it is raining still. Jake made me laugh - “It really is a holiday today, even the Sun has taken the day off!” Most of town is shut and only Inter-city buses are running. I hope I can find an open internet source both to post this, and especially as we are desperate for contact [View Full Entry]
