The Philippines has Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald's, but we want authentic food. It's midnight, but the area is bustling with people, including children. Pastor Ramil and the other pastors take us to their version of our McDonald's- JollyB- before driving a couple more hours to our hotel in Balanga.... read more

We were down to our final few weeks in the Philippines and after reading about a certain area during our travels, Dale was very keen to go and explore. It was a little out of our way to get to and would involve a long journey, it was also a bit of a gamble as information is fairly limited but we decided to wager all our remaining time that it would be worth it so set about working out the best way to travel halfway across the country to get there. The area we are talking about is the Caramoan Peninsula found in Southeast Luzon in the Bicol area. It’s not really an undiscovered area as it’s already been picked up by a the Survivor TV series with countless countries having gone there to film in ... read more

A Race Against the Clock Enough with Boracay... After seeing the difference between White Beach and Bulabog Beach, I am glad I stayed on the Bulabog side. While it wasn't as pretty, it certainly didn't have the overdevelopment like White Beach. I had my longest ferry ride of the trip (four hours) from Caticlan, Panay to Roxas, Mindoro. We were 1.5 hours late, so I was going to be very pressed to make it to Pinamalyan before night fall (65 km). I couldn't help notice that while the ferry was boarding how may of the ferry workers had helmets on their heads (good) and flip-flops on their feet (bad). I'm not sure what the rationale is behind this, ... read more

So, on the advise of my good friend and incredible photographer, Kelly Cappelli (www.kellycappelli.com) I've decided to start my blog on this trip to the Philippines, and then will be traveling on to Indonesia. The first photos I'm uploading will be from around the area of Iba, Zambales. Traveling through this area I was amazed to see that even after 22 years the effects of the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo are still evident. Many of the rivers in the area are still buried under tons of Lahar. Some of the rivers are being dredged in an attempt to get them flowing again. In a later entry I will upload photos of a cross sticking up out of the lahar and the rest of the church remains buried since that day in 1991.... read more

One of the sites we surveyed that will be getting not only a facelift but also two additional classrooms built is an elementary school in Barangay Rabanes, Zambales. I have said it many times, but the most enjoyment I get out of traveling with my job is the opportunities I get to interact with many different people, and in particular the children. This series of photos attached to this entry was taken when we visited the school, and as you can see, the kids love the camera and getting thier pictures taken. Although these people in most cases have far less than we have, and these children aren't as blessed with much of the things our own children take for granted, they always have smiles on thier faces.... read more

We are coming to the Philippines in January 2013. We would like to buy a Honda xr200 to use while we travel. We are having trouble finding one to buy on the internet. If anyone could tell us some place to purchase a used one around Manila or south of Manila on the way to Batangas City. We need to know what we have to do to get it license and legal to ride anywhere in PL. We are planning to visit several islands. We were lead to believe that some places that rent motorcycles do not allow you to take it from island to island. We are planning on staying 6 weeks. We are planning to land in Manila, then head to Palawan, next to the Visayas , Boracay island , Bohol, Romblon, and then ... read more

20.-24. of April (Slovenian version below.) We are on the road again strolling around the Philippines. "Adult life" now allows us only 3 weeks but as they say, short is sweet. On Friday we were at the office both very eagerly waiting for the end of the workday, backpacks were packed in one hour (now we are already very good at it) and after couple of hours we were already sitting on a plane for Manila. We were greeted by unbearable heat, humidity and smog. The Friendly's hostel is apparently the place to be in the old part of Manila called Malate. We were unexpectedly "upgraded" and we got an air-con room, which was a balm for the abnormally hot night. A San Miguel on the roof terrace for a good night sleep and we were ... read more

I'm the type of person who really doesn't mind to hike a long way if the view at the end of the trail is all worth it and breath taking. For this reason, hike to Mt.Pinatubo has been enjoyable for me. I've been here twice - one time with my sister and the other time with a very close friend. My sister loves photography, so she'll always take any chance to travel so she can take a lot of really nice pictures. The first time, I went to Mt.Pinatubo, the trek just took about 1.5 hours. This doesn't include the bumpy 4x4 ride... but nevertheless..I enjoyed it. During the bumpy ride, I realized that before Mt.Pinatubo became a tourist attraction in the Philippines, it first erupted and it's ashes even reached as far as Metro Manila. ... read more

We left the island of Pandan at 1pm, Dominique, the owner of the island assured us we would have no problem getting a bus back to San Jose for our flight, there was one every hour and Holy week was over so there would be loads of empty seats.. When we got to the bus station, however at 1.20pm expecting to get the 2pm bus we were told that the next bus was 3pm. We jumped back on the tricycle and asked him to take us to the other bus station. Once there the news was the same- next bus 3pm! How stupid to have two buses going at the same time. We had no option but to sit it out, the sun was beating down hard and there was barely any shade. 3pm came and ... read more
