My Journey to the Philippines: Day One 12/14/07 Start: Spokane Washington Dad arrived last night. We are both excited and a bit nervous. Sondra Hildreth (a girl from church) was a sweetheart and gave us a ride to the airport at 5:30 AM. I like using my passport, it makes me feel important. We are now on the plane to Portland, Oregon waiting on the runway for the engine to warm up. No joke. I snowed last night in Spokane. It will be an interesting change in weather by the end of the day. We are flying thus: Spokane to Portland to Tokyo, Japan, to Manilla Philippines. there are two layovers about three hours long. Dad says the flight from Portland to Japan is only about ten hours long. Which is a relief I thought it ... read more

Finally in the Philippines It is so beautiful here in a National Geographic way. I love soaking it all in. Reading travel books seems so hollow now. There are so many people everywhere. People drive like they line up. If you aren't cheating you aren't trying hard enough is like their national motto. It is hard to express in words what it is like. In the states you would say Phill lives in the Ghetto. It is pretty normal here though. All the apartments are stacked together. There are always people everywhere, cars everywhere. It was dark when we got to Phill's apartment so we couldn't see much. My little brother Phillip served a mission for our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, for two years in the Philippines. Right before he ... read more

well...I've been here 2 weeks now and still loving it! Last week was definately interesting. We were threatened my a super typhoon (it missed Metro Manila but hit the northern provinces pretty hard) had a 5.0 earthquake and a rogue senator held a siege at the five star Manila Peninsula hotel in an effort to overthrow President Arroyo. This is the third time this particular senator has tried a coup, and all have been unsuccessful. This latest attempt was over in about 7 hours without any casualties! I must say the PNP (Philippine National Police) and the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) did an amazing job of locking down the Makati City area where the hotel is and trying to prevent any casualties. Security has been beefed up considerably and there are now armed guards ... read more

Obviously, the American thanksgiving holiday isn't celebrated in most countries. Here in the Philippines, they know the holiday, but it's not a holiday for them. That being the case I decided to celebrate my Thanksgiving by having real Filipino cuisine...a plate of Sizzling Sisig, some Pancit Canton, Olimpiads, and deep fried pig's ears washed down with Red Horse....YUM! I consider myself an adventureous eater, and am willing to try almost anything once. If you really want to know what I've been eating look up the recepies online....the first thing you'll notice is that Filipinos use ALL of the animal in their meals...nothing is wasted....NOTHING....hehehehe I will continue to update with other intersting foods I've tried. ... read more

This trip was for a wedding. We were based in Manila and had to go shopping a couple of times. It wasn't easy then to go too far, especially because we had to cross the whole congested city to go anywhere and that with the rainy season, some roads were difficult. In Manila we stayed in a middle class neighborhood. It was very comfortable, but we only had ac in one room, and temperature was well over 36 Celsius and 100% humidity all the time, so it was tough. In the city lots of slums, metal sheet "houses", but also very rich places, often side by side... which is a culture shock. Also, almost at every store in town, one or more armed guards. It's also a shock..but after a while you get use to it. ... read more
