I have been reading a bloggers account of living in the Philippines. It sounds just as though l am living in a war zone which is almost total nonsense. I have lived here for 8 years with my wife and daughter aged 8 years and the people are very friendly and peaceful...and can say 99% of people live happy lives in this beautiful country. Sure many live on a small income but it is a land where you can live cheaply and fruit and vegetables grow all year round. It is safe to visit the country and you will enjoy yourselves here. If you want to find trouble you can, stay out late in the night, some areas Manila are like most cities you are at risk. You can move freely in Manila, shopping and sightseeing ... read more

After ten months back from a motorcycle trip to Latin America, I quit my job at HP and start to travel again. For the Latin America trip, I felt like a school children on a summer recess. The trip had boundaries: take a leave of absence, travel, and go back to a job. For this trip, the job quitting is the only known boundary. The other boundary is unknown to me: Would I get tired of traveling? When will I stop traveling? Do I have enough money? Can I work again? Would somebody hire me if I want a job again? Should I really do this? Am I irresponsible? What would I do next? I debated with myself and these questions scrambled my brain. I guess, to a caged bird like me, a wide open space ... read more

Christmas day in the Philippines is so different to the UK. Shops and malls are open, and it really seems to be business as usual. The obvious difference is that almost everyone seems to have the Noche Buena celebration when Christmas Eve turns into Christmas day. The Noche Buena is when families get together - many of them balikbayans and give presents out to their immediate and sometime extended families. If you are family oriented it's a nice get together. My experience was with Apple and some of her immediate family, but also cousins from the US of A and Japan. It was nice to meet them all - they made me feel really welcome - and now we've now got open invites to USA and Japan! The ice was broken by the younger adult family ... read more

An Extreme Low Point In My Life Finally we get to go home!! We woke up early (5 AM ish) and checked out. The front desk attendant was sleeping in a chair and we had to ring the bell to wake her. I still wasnt feeling well and sipped some water before I left. When we got to the airport we had to wait in so many lines. I started to get REALLY sick. I finally asked a guard where a bathroom was and I almost blacked out trying to find it. Everything got all fuzzy. I threw up in my mouth and finally made it to the BR. I was scared because the BR wasn't really convenioent to get to and dad was waiting in line (one of many) to check in. I had ... read more

A very long day Phill made eggs with mackerel over rice for breakfast. I'm getting tired of "things on rice" for every meal. We all got ready to go to the temple. Phill looked so good in his suit. We went over to Chona's and she was still getting ready so she scurried upstairs. The man we hired with the van was late but we got to the temple alright. They all went in and I waited. I walked around a bit but didn't really feel well. I think the food finally caught up to me. I waited in the temple annex. It is a building next to the temple with a large waiting room, offices, bathrooms, and an eating area. I was still tired so I took a bitty nap. When they were done ... read more

The Walled City Phill and chona went to order the cake. They are getting married tomorrow. They are getting one with their faces airbrushed on it. Ithink it is funny. We got a taxi to take us back to the country affair store. Inside of the store is another little store called the CTR store. It is owned by a member of our church and sells church related handicrafts. Yesterday we didn't have cash so we went back today. My father purchased a liahona and a creche set carved out of wood. He also bought be a case for my scriptures, it is royal blue with gold thread elephants it is beautiful. We got another taxi to take us to the old walled part of the city. It took forever because traffic is so bad. ... read more

With Christmas getting closer traffic is getting worse I forgot = Last night when we were watching TV a random chubby little girl without a shirt on appeared out of no where. She saw that they had visitors and was suddenly embarrassed about being half naked and covered her little chest with her hands. When one of the little boys came down she flashed them and laughed. She was really cute and funny and didn't listen to a word anyone said. She had to have been four or five years old. This morning we had pancakes and bananas for breakfast. Phill bought the bananas from a street vendor. Phill speaks a language called Illongo but is pretty good at picking up Tagolog. The bananas here have a much more complex flavor and are more yellow. It ... read more

More Wedding Preperations Like I thought both dad and I woke up early. It is about 5:30 AM, Manila time. We are sitting in the next room reading and writting because phill is still asleep. People outside are starting to stir again and come to life. Metro Manila is a bunch of cities all around the actual city manila. It is the commercial heart of the country. Everyone comes here to work or go to school. Apparently it is very expensive though. I'm guessing not unlike New York City. It is now light outside and I can hear roosters crowing in the middle of this huge city. Someone is also playing shania twain. The linoleum in Phill's apt is colored to look like carpet. Now someone is blasting UB40's Red Red Wine. I like this song. ... read more

Day Two "Change yourself, change your fortune." I woke up to my noisy father sighing and making wierd old man noises. He is a strange man. Chona and her mother brought over breakfast. It was fried eggs, fried rice and a sort of hot dog thing. We also had bread. It ws really great. I think it is like camping, anything tastes better when you are hungry. The shower felt so good. It took some configuring to make sure didin't get my clothes wet but it was fine. Chona got us a taxi to get to church which is pretty normal here. Not a lot of people have cars, but we've noticed the ones who do usually have pretty nice ones. Chona's sister has one but there wasn't enough room for all of us in ... read more
